"Proven" is slippery criteria and that is why most domestic abusers avoid penalty. You have to rely on reasonable inferences based on the available information. This dude has now seen three arrests in a year - all for various violent acts against women. All in situations that are tough to prove. However it is clear that it is damn tough to see that many arrests if you are not doing anything wrong

Burden of proof is a tenet of a court of law. However, the NFL is not a court of law, and therefore does not have to prove anything to "fire" the player. He's still getting paid. There's nothing illegal here. Point is, he's done. The average person here would get fired if accused of a crime like that.

i hate jumping to conclusions...fact is, women know what to "claim" to get money out of someone with money....could easily be the case here.

I agree, but reacting one way or the other without the facts is, well , unfortunately common place. It scares me to death because I have gone my whole life without being arrested and this guy has done it 3 times in the last year or so. Is it really that hard to NOT be arrested for something? I guess I have just been lucky so far.

No, it's not. The vast majority of the NFL seems to have no problem at all in avoiding DV accusations.

The fact that most players don't encounter such problems means a couple of things.

1. Most women don't make up lies of DV to chase money.

2. Because of #1, it's entirely foolish to dismiss DV accusations on the account of "gold digging women".

Just a quick question to the board. Can anyone name all these players for whom it was proven a woman was just swindling them out of money?

As a Cowboys fan I will never forget the false accusations made on Michael Irvin and Erik Williams. I'm not sure money was the reason but it was some kind of a conspiracy between a stripper and a tv personality.

More recently there has been the fake rape accusation in Rolling Stone Magazine (UVA?) and the Duke Lacrosse team.

And with these misdemeanor "putting hands on a female" laws. How can you defend against those? Putting hands on is pretty vague and doesn't take into account that the female could be the aggressor.

it is neither of those...it happens ALL the time...Jerry Jones paid out a sexual assault case last year himself. I guess now our owner is a sex abuser and needs the team taken away from him? Hardly...dont dismiss money grabbers. Attorneys make livings by ambulance chasing all the time.

Of course there are people like that out there, but this isn't such a widespread issue that any story should be written off.

Have about 1700 players on the active rosters. Handful of incidents over the last couple decade.

I'm surprised there aren't a lot more stories going on about misdemeanor abuse all over the league. One, these are rich young men--many of whom lack judgement--so they're vulnerable to these accusations and it'd be naive to think those sorts of things don't happen. Two, these guys are full of testosterone and many of them have to come from fairly dysfunctional homes. Domestic violence breeds domestic violence.

On the one hand, these households have to have been coached not to resort to calling police automatically. On the other, these situations have to come up all the time. And even mutually-abusive relationships qualify fairly easily for these misdemeanor assault charges.

That said, in McDonald's case where he reportedly assaulted his pregnant girlfriend, and then did it again while she was holding the child...that's just dumb. It's one thing to give these guys counseling and anger management training and to dedicate PR resources to managing the perceptions. People need and deserve second chances, and I don't have trouble with those being offered to exceptionally talented football players. But a pattern of hurting people close to you and damaging the league in the process is not going to get overlooked.

It is such a very very small percentage of these cases. Immediately going to the gold digger card is blindly sexist bs. You immediately question whether the victim is telling the truth. Lame and immature.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with questioning whether or not an accusation is accurate. Especially in situations where there's an obvious financial incentive for the accuser to lie.

By the same token, there're also very good reasons for people to be suspicious of a player claiming innocence when they have ever incentive of their own to cover up or downplay an incident.

The reality is, all of these cases are different. Some are inexcusable. Some are more serious than others. Some percentage have been demonstrated to likely be attempts at manipulation. You have to look at each accusation and decide the merits or lack thereof separately.

Lame and immature is saying someone is guilty before proven innocent. It is innocent until proven guilty. Due to the fact he was said to be innocent during the prior DV case, there is precedence that he stands more likely to be innocent again than guilty since it appears it is the same woman involved.
