Dez asking for 17m a year

But why would the Cowboys offer him $17M per year when they can get him for the next 3 years for far less overall (even 4 years I think would be less overall) and with nothing guaranteed other than the one year if they just keep franchising him? The Cowboys have 0 incentive to give him what he is asking for. I don't expect him to just sign whatever's on the table, but he has to start from a semi-reasonable amount or be willing to go down. I suppose if he wants to sit out this year (and most likely next) he can, but that isn't exactly going to encourage other teams to sign him and it is when other teams start to sign players (or for whatever reason tagging the player is impossible) that these numbers start to come into play, not in a case like this.

ya know, let's just pull 2 things out of this and i'm out.

"he has to start somewhere".
yes. yes he sure does.

"be willing to go down".
why do you think he started so high? you new to negotiations?

why must you see the worst case scenario as the only possible, or the most highly probable, outcome? people who look for the worst in situations usually find it whether it's there or not. just a matter of what dog you feed.

how about you put the worry down until there's something to worry about cause i promise you, there ain't a damn thing you can do between now and then to change the inbetween.

except worry and that won't help.

Just a question - At this point, is there anyway Dez can get the public opinion back on his side?

I think for the most part the public IS on his side.

Sure, he's lost a little support, and the more knowledgeable fans (eg, CZ posters) get the drill, but look at the typical Facebook comments on any Dez story. The top comments are invariably from morons screaming "Pay the man!" The average fan is clueless on how this works and has no appreciation for the front office using sound fiscal judgment.

I think the franchise tag is a joke. Any player should have the right to negotiate with any team when they are unrestricted. If you're too stupid to manage your cap, then you lose players. If you can't find a way to win, your star player gets to move somewhere who has the "brains" to put it together.

Players should be allowed to make as much as they can. Maybe they should franchise a team, not allow the owners to make but "X" amount. I wonder how it would be if they franchised some of you at work, and you found yourself making less than some punk who just started , yet a tenth of the force you'd bring to the table.

I mean, I get your overall point about fairness and doing away with the tag. But the last line of this is silly since that's not at all how the franchise tag works, and it doesn't make sense to compare a professional sports contract under a CBA to the average job.

But to your point, I would be thrilled if my firm "franchise tagged" me and I made the average of the top law partner salaries in town.

Im just curious, has anyone actually seen something saying Dez wants 17 a year?

No. Only comment that he made that has been confirmed by his agent is holding out at the start of the season and even that I'm not buying. If I had to guess right now I think Dallas and Dez get a deal done and all this whaling by fans will seem funny. To me this is just the back and forth that tends to happen in contract negations and when it is all done and contracts are signed the 2 sides will act as if none of this happened. Us fans need to not take these deals so personally

Look..no one loves Dez more then me. If he seriously wants 17 million, he can go play for Oakland or Jacksonville. I am sure they will pay it.
Dallas has been very disciplined of late with both cap distrubution with positional value. We finally seem to be building from the lines out which I have been screaming for what....10+ years now.

As far as WR contracts go it seems most teams are starting to wise up, like they did with RB's. Most are starting to see that WR's are currently being over paid and are not as valueable as some of past contracts handed out (Calvin). i believe the if you look at the 2 teams in the SuperBowl you see a bit of what I am talking about:

NE

RB- Blount and scrubs
WR-Edelman, Amendola and some young guys

Seattle

RB-Lynch (This hurts my theory a bit)
WR-Baldwin, Kearse and more scrubs

The way to win in the NFL. Strong QB play, pass rush, good defense and efficient offense.

I think the teams that wrote the last 4 large contracts to WRs probably felt after 2-3 years later that they overpaid.
L Fitzgerald
C Johnson
M Wallace
V Jackson

CJ and Fitz should be the only two considered since they signed the contract with the team that drafted them. Wallace/Jackson hit the market where you are guaranteed a huge payday.

Sure they overpaid but do you think the Cardinals or Lions would choose to let Fitz or Johnson hit free agency if they could do it all over again? No way...it is bad from a football prospective and a business prospective.

For the love of god just stop with the "I have a family" nonsense. Just makes you look like a total jackass. I understand wanting to get the money while you can, that's fine. This "I have a family to feed" shtick makes me lose all respect for these guys during the process. Unless you're Antonio Cromartie or your mom is Jaba, you don't need 17 million to you family... for their entire lives!

He is not saying 17 mill evidently

"13 mil is cool but Where is my security?" This is about guaranteed money or at least this tweet seems to be saying that

Everybody voicing opinions..13 mil is cool but Where is my security? I'll wait ...5 years without complaining..So how am I selfish? #family1

Details

I love Dez and want him to be Cowboy for life but this whole idea of "security" and "family" just rubs me the wrong way. The overwhelming majority of people in this country will work their entire lives and earn nowhere near that kind of money. At lot of them will still live comfortable, "secure" lives.

Look, he deserves to paid like a Top 5 WR becuase he is a Top 5 WR, but don't play this whole "security" and "family" BS. He and his family could live more comfortably than most people with the money he has earned to-date. This type of argument just falls flat in my eyes.

The "17 million" part was just hyperbole on my part. I was referencing the #family crap and the "I have a family to feed" BS.

And, if 13 million was cool, this deal would be done. I don't believe for one second the Cowboys wouldn't do that.

yeah and it is not about the money either. lol I get that players say things like that then again many players go broke after their careers are done. As for the 13 he would be fine with, it is not about that is about what portion is guaranteed, you say I get 13 mill a year but if none is guaranteed money then at any point if he is injured or released there is no payoff. He wants a good portion of that contract to be guaranteed that is money he can count on being there no matter what

What I meant was, I don't think the Cowboys would have any issue guaranteeing him 13 million/yr for four years. Likely, this is coming down to a another year situation, just like with Murray.

it's easy to say "leave out the family BS" until you realize how many hands are in the pot.

Understand your point of view and I mean no disrespect by this but the number of mouths he has to feed is his problem not the Cowboys. He is being paid to play football.

To give a point of reference for this discussion, a person making $50k a year will gross $1M over a 20 year career. Think about that. Dez will make $13M for a single year under the franchise tag. I firmly believe he should be paid like a Top 5 WR but it should be based on what he does on field not how many mouths he needs to feed.

it's business for both sides. Dez has a right to ask to be the highest paid WR in the game. if the cowboys feel the best move is to not pay him, fine. but there's no way that's the best move. we need him, especially this year, and badly.
