Dez asking for 17m a year

They didn't win anything with him. I don't think that can be their best team when 4 others were SB champions.

He wasn't playing Defense in the Super Bowl. Moss caught the go ahead TD right before the miracle "catch".

If Dallas offered 3yr/51m would Dez take it?

Because that is what they pay the next 3 years if they tag him.

And that comes with 0m in guarantees.

Just a guess but I'd say no. No bonus money and he wants a longer term deal.

Just a question - At this point, is there anyway Dez can get the public opinion back on his side?

but before it was 14-15 mil a year, someone had to set that. historically those setting it are always the pivotal players of the time. no one will look at calvins contract THEN compare their #'s overall, just want more. the entire point is to get as much as you can for a vast majority of the players and hey, the owners are the same way. dez will get paid and i doubt seriously he's going anywhere.

i don't give a holy fly part in a hurricane how much he's asking for now. did you expect him to just go "hey, whatevers on the table i'll sign"? if you did...

..bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha..

sorry. i couldn't hold it. you people who live entirely in the moment get so lost in the story. crack me up you do. (in my yoda voice)

toss out a # and go. that's all that happened. next move, coming up pretty soon i suppose.

But why would the Cowboys offer him $17M per year when they can get him for the next 3 years for far less overall (even 4 years I think would be less overall) and with nothing guaranteed other than the one year if they just keep franchising him? The Cowboys have 0 incentive to give him what he is asking for. I don't expect him to just sign whatever's on the table, but he has to start from a semi-reasonable amount or be willing to go down. I suppose if he wants to sit out this year (and most likely next) he can, but that isn't exactly going to encourage other teams to sign him and it is when other teams start to sign players (or for whatever reason tagging the player is impossible) that these numbers start to come into play, not in a case like this.

It's not even that much, 12.8 million this year, goes up 20% next year to 15.4, and again 2 years from now to 18.4, equaling 3 years for 46.6 million. The forth year would bring it up to a 17M/year average roughly but like you said, that is with 0 guarantees. Dez is out of his mind if he thinks the Cowboys will just give him 17M/year.

My only concern is if we tag him two years in a row that he will go half *** on the field and not want to produce because we haven't given him what he wants. You know throw a tantrum and all that. I know people are going to say "He'll want to stay professional for any future team he goes to if not the Boyz," but he could still take plays off which would hurt the team. That is my biggest concern.

Then u bench him

TSmith will probably see his whole deal. DAL may even give him a bump or two.

If he stays healthy and does what he is getting paid to do, Dez could have another 8 years with DAL.

He will, and it's precisely because he didn't sign a contract that was impossible to complete. If the team doesn't restructure him again, his cap number basically plateaus and the team doesn't ever have to plan for his cap to be impossible to deal with.

The third time you franchise a player it is 144% of the previous year or the QB franchise number, whichever is greater.

That is why it would go from 15.4m to 22.1m.

The 4th time would be 144% again or 31.8m.

Hmmm my bad... guess we might just have him for 2 more years.

But even 3 years is less than what Dez is asking for with 0m in guarantees.

He has no leverage. We will get paid, but stop the whining.

I can get why he hates the rule... but it exists and he can either deal with it or basically take a 2-3 year retirement (at the end of which he won't be worth anywhere near $17M a year right away)

I think the franchise tag is a joke. Any player should have the right to negotiate with any team when they are unrestricted. If you're too stupid to manage your cap, then you lose players. If you can't find a way to win, your star player gets to move somewhere who has the "brains" to put it together.

Players should be allowed to make as much as they can. Maybe they should franchise a team, not allow the owners to make but "X" amount. I wonder how it would be if they franchised some of you at work, and you found yourself making less than some punk who just started , yet a tenth of the force you'd bring to the table.
