The defensive tackle position is one of the most misunderstood aspects of Rod Marinelli’s 4-3 defensive scheme. Many were left scratching their heads when the Cowboys passed on Sharrif Floyd early in the 2013 draft. Under Marinelli’s guidance, Dallas usually doesn’t put first-round value on the position.

But it was a surprise to some that the Cowboys did not select a defensive tackle with any of their eight picks in this year’s draft.

When Dallas was on the clock with the 27th pick in the first round, some were hoping the Cowboys would take Texas’ Malcom Brown, who went to New England five picks later. During a conference call with season-ticket holders last week, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones explained why they didn’t.
“Malcom Brown is a great football player and we did have him on our board,” Jones said. “He’s not the perfect ideal fit in Coach Marinelli’s system. He’s obviously a big physical player. But with Rod, in terms of what we look for with our under tackle, our three-technique — and it’s what Tyrone Crawford plays for us. Russell Maryland did it back when [Jimmy Johnson] was here, coaching the 4-3 when we went to Super Bowls. Leon Lett did it. — We call it a quick twitch.

Hopefully one day Jerry will realize a commanding physical presence in the middle of your defense is extremely important. That's why Suh was the most highly sought after FA in years. We haven't had that in forever, and IMO it's no coincidence our defense has been soft over the years.

the only problem with that argument is suh has been on bad defenses.
so was haynesworth who was considered an elite 1T.

you want great players of course but their fit to the system matters a whole lot.

suh was so valued because he is both quick twitch and powerful.
same with dontari poe.

if the cowboy aren't getting those top of the draft guys they see the rest as rather equivalent.

I hate when Jerry tries to talk like a football guy. I highly doubt he understand that "quick twitch" stuff he mentions. You play your best players. If he had Suh or Gerald McCoy he'd play them.

If you're going to point a finger, point it at Marenilli.
It's 100% clear that Jerry and Stephen are listening to him on what he's looking for at the
position.

If you don't think Rod Marenilli understands his scheme well enough to know what he's looking for at the DTs, take it up with him..

It wasn't Jerry.

But if it was, that'd be fine.

Some here seem to forget that Jerry played more football and at a higher level than 99% of all that have ever been on this forum.

Then, on top of that, he's been surrounded by professional football minds (some truly great ones) for the last 30 years.

Yeah Jerry ain't no slouch but many are still bitter about the Jimmy divorce..

thanks for the help I never understand when the link isnt working

Wow. What commentary. If we had an elite defender, we'd play them.

And, as the title noted, it was Stephen.

Sorry, Stephen. But it sounds as an excuse for not addressing the DT position. I'll give him credit for addressing the DE position, so much that he's wants to play them at DT. Anyway, all that "quick twitch" stuff sounds a bit phony IMO.

I've wanted a big guy in the middle who could play the 0, 1, and 3 but those that can do that well aren't easy to find.

No Im sure your right. Jerry's been in the NFL owner since 1989 and a common term we all understand [ quick twitch] without getting up from our computers Jerry cant figure out
though he's talking to all his coaches and other professional personal on a daily basis for more then 25 years. I am sure you slammed Jerry real good.

Still think the Brockers rumors have something to them.

They want 3s and they have them. Lawrence, Mincey, Hardy, Crawford for sure and maybe we'll find another one or two in camp.

We also have some 1/3s.

Some of the above can play 5/7/8/6/3/1

I guess we cant have it all. Next year maybe we draft a true DT. I'm happy with the DE's we have this year. We'll be putting a lot of QB's on the ground.

Suh can collapse the pocket and defend the run. Those guys don't shoe up everyday.
