Hayden is probably only gonna be on the line in the base 4-3. when we're in the nickel he's coming off the field for one of our better rushers

Thats what I say but thats not what happened last year. I was sick and tired of seeing Hayden in on passing downs.

Hopefully one day Jerry will realize a commanding physical presence in the middle of your defense is extremely important. That's why Suh was the most highly sought after FA in years. We haven't had that in forever, and IMO it's no coincidence our defense has been soft over the years.

Suh is not just a physical presence, he is also a quick player. If he had been there he would have been the pick. Brown is no suh and he was talking about brown
There was no suh type player available to us so we took the best player at another position
That is exactly the philosophy that has built the online
Don't reach for a player to fill a position, just take the best player

I believe him. It's not like we couldn't have had Brown. We could have taken him, but we didn't. There has to be a reason. Here it is.

I hate when Jerry tries to talk like a football guy. I highly doubt he understand that "quick twitch" stuff he mentions. You play your best players. If he had Suh or Gerald McCoy he'd play them.

...and there must be several reasons why neither are Cowboys, then.

To say that Lawrence and Russell can play DT is one thing, although I disagree with the assessment that DLaw can play DT, and I have not seen much of Russell to know otherwise.......but then to say that Brown did not fit into their system is ridiculous.. I saw TX play enough even with that sorry defense, only because of Brown and I can tell you that the guy is just a great football player and will play any system you want. NE has Wilfork's replacement for the next 10 years just like that.

And then to compare them to Maryland, an Outland Trophy winner at the position, and Lett who graded and performed very highly at the NAIA level at that position as well is also disingenuous. I guess sometimes you just try to talk yourself into why you did or did not do something and will come up with any excuse whether it makes sense or not. But you better come up with something better than that. I certainly hope they hit on Byron Jones, because if not, this is what will be talked about during the season if Jones is not performing like a first rounder and we are getting run down the throat.

The defensive tackle position is one of the most misunderstood aspects of Rod Marinelli’s 4-3 defensive scheme. Many were left scratching their heads when the Cowboys passed on Sharrif Floyd early in the 2013 draft. Under Marinelli’s guidance, Dallas usually doesn’t put first-round value on the position.

But it was a surprise to some that the Cowboys did not select a defensive tackle with any of their eight picks in this year’s draft.

When Dallas was on the clock with the 27th pick in the first round, some were hoping the Cowboys would take Texas’ Malcom Brown, who went to New England five picks later. During a conference call with season-ticket holders last week, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones explained why they didn’t.
Malcom Brown is a great football player and we did have him on our board,” Jones said. “He’s not the perfect ideal fit in Coach Marinelli’s system. He’s obviously a big physical player. But with Rod, in terms of what we look for with our under tackle, our three-technique — and it’s what Tyrone Crawford plays for us. Russell Maryland did it back when [Jimmy Johnson] was here, coaching the 4-3 when we went to Super Bowls. Leon Lett did it. — We call it a quick twitch.

Ok now to me this is Stephen using smoke and mirrors,(aka lying) to smooth talk the S ticket holders.
Look at the underlined.
First he says he is great, and then lies and says he was on their board !
Later he says he does not fit what Marinelli wants or what they want, and that he isnt a quick twitch.
So my question would be why is he on your board at all ???????
Maybe they thought he would drop to round 5,6,7??? no they know when is going so no reason to have a guy who doesnt fit your system on your board.
If he was being truthful and less jones like he would simply say brown was not the type we are looking for at that position.

I think the cowboys jones's and marinelli feel the end pass rush is more important, and contain the pocket not collapse it, and guard the run.
They dont want a big run stopper who is not also fast, also speed over size.

edit:
I will add that both DE they chose, are light weights, with speed.

I guess we cant have it all. Next year maybe we draft a true DT. I'm happy with the DE's we have this year. We'll be putting a lot of QB's on the ground.

I respect your opinion and you may be right, but I like out DL including our tackles. If you're talking about a very disruptive 3 capable of getting 10+ sacks a year then I have my doubts we have one of those. Crawford may push that. He might be another Ratliff. Hardy may be the same possibly more. He's not going to line up outside every passing down. They will mix up the edge rushers.

Sorry, Stephen. But it sounds as an excuse for not addressing the DT position. I'll give him credit for addressing the DE position, so much that he's wants to play them at DT. Anyway, all that "quick twitch" stuff sounds a bit phony IMO.

This same discussion has occurred every year since Marinelli got here. At what point do you just accept he's looking for something different?

Jerry is a football guy and most likely knows as much and maybe more about football then you.

Hardy has showed he is elite on the outside and the inside

Yeah but last year we didn't have hardy Lawrence Gregory Mincey Crawford all itching to get after the qb. We have the rushers now

and thats what I thought right after I posted my message but as far as last year I would have preferred anyone to the Golden Cock

1 technique player in this rotation plays a very small amount of downs. It's like saying why don't you draft a linebacker in the 1st round to play strong side linebacker.

This defensive line is about getting pressure on the quarterback, not stopping the run. That is what the linebackers and secondary is for. That is why we have Lee and McClain.

You don't spend a high draft pick on a part time player. You think you would have learned that from the mess we have at tight end.

When we fall into the nickel, the 1 technique comes off the field. And we're in the nickel the majority of the time.

You see one of the defensive ends moving inside with crawford.

We have guys who can fill that role for when we need them to fill it. The fact that people can't come to grips with that, is astonishing.

3rd round is the highest i would ever seem them drafting a 1 Tech in this scheme. Its a 2 down player. In 3rd you are either going to have 2 3 Tech type players or a DE kick inside

another season of Hayden as one of the starters smh. Please say it aint so.

I know that Marinelli doesn't think the NT position is worth a high pick , I get that. A 4th or 5th round pick shouldn't be out of the question though. Even players picked in those rounds should have more talent than Hayden. Why do they refuse to upgrade a player that has consistently been rated as one of the worst at his position every year? Why? Why? Why? I think Marinelli is being stubborn about the situation. Most of us sees the weakness in the defense when Hayden is on the field every week . The ones that don't see it are not able to watch the game due to various reasons.

If you're going to point a finger, point it at Marenilli.
It's 100% clear that Jerry and Stephen are listening to him on what he's looking for at the
position.

If you don't think Rod Marenilli understands his scheme well enough to know what he's looking for at the DTs, take it up with him..

And maybe there is your reason Rod Marenilli was 0-16 as a head coach.......

1. Stubborn...set in his ways
2. A fatal flaw in his system

Just saying ;)
