Former Cowboys DT Josh Brent back with club in scouting role

Former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent is back with the organization.

Brent, who retired from football earlier this year, has joined the club in a scouting role. Owner/GM Jerry Jones announcedthe news during practice on Thursday.

In May, Brent was placed on the reserve/retired list. Head coach Jason Garrett visited with him before he made that final decision to step away from the game at the time.

"He's worked very hard to find some normalcy in his life," Garrett said. "I admire him in many ways."

Brent previously made a return to the league in 2014 just two years after he was involved in a fatal car crash while driving under the influence. The former Illinois product was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to six months in jail plus 10 years of probation.

Brent played in 40 games for the Cowboys collecting 46 combined tackles and 1.5 sacks. He was a supplemental draft pick for the Cowboys in 2010.

I think what's more important here is is he qualified to work in the scouting department. Hopefully, his job is something menial rather than something that hurts the team if he doesn't know what he's doing.

As others have already stated, this is JJ helping out a player (likely in need of a job).

And his recovery will probably will be difficult for him to maintain, so the battle with his inner demons like guilt, poor self-worth, guilt, and depression are likely to cause him to fail again. Jerry's staff is well aware of his challenges, and they're trying to save this unfortunate human being. Remember, the team was 100% behind him as well, so I know there's been a lot of prayers and tears shed over this situation.

This is the kind of stuff from Jerry that convinced guys like Hardy and Collins to sign here. He genuinely loves his players, and will do everything he can to help them out. I personally love it, they stuck with this guy through the worst period of his life..... something a lot of people don't even get from family and close friends
