When should Jason Witten consider retirement?

We can all agree Witten isn't what he used to be. He's still very solid and reliable, but when should he call it quits. When would you want a different starting tight end. Witten wants to play until his late 30's, but would it be better for the team to have a big play te. I personally want Jason to get a super bowl as the starter.

How many big play tight ends are out there? How many consistently make big plays? Not everyone is Gronk. I've seen a lot of tight ends over the years have one really good season and then disappear.

He can play as long as he wants, at the very least he'll be a very effective blocker, kind of like Heath Miller. But we need somebody who can make some plays in the passing game soon. Whether that's Escobar, Swaim, who knows.

He should have quit/ retired two years ago. Here are the problems with Witten:

  • He's slow
  • He cannot break tackles
  • He runs routes 1-2 yards short of the first down marker in hopes of getting YAC but hardly ever gets them
  • He's good for 1-2 false starts a game
  • He's a progress stopper for other TE's
And im disturbed that he has neglected his physical fitness. Compare his physique to Vernon Davis. Smh

I'm not asking for gronk, but someone who averages more than 9.3 yards a catch and 3 touchdowns.

I'll take Witten for a few years if we pick up another wr to play opposite of Dez

Emmit was a "class act" his last two years in Dallas, but we all could see that he was done. The same goes for Witten. Yeah yeah hes a class act...got it! Yeah yeah i saw the espn show on witten and how he overcame an abusive family ( father), he a good guy...got it. But if you throw all that out and just look at ability, he needs to be replaced or retire. Some people cant grasp this because they like witten. Its like when people cant see that their baby is ugly smh.

Wow...

In your "analysis" you fail to mention that he is an NFL iron-man in terms of his durability, still runs great routes, still beats coverage regularly, still is an above average blocker, is Tony Romo's favorite target-- and OH YEAH, is one of the best locker room leaders and statesmen in the entire league.

Witten can play as long as he wants to. Period. Sure-fire HOF players have earned that right. "Progress Stopper?" Please. Every single player on the roster can learn from his example on how to be a professional player in the NFL.

He had the fifth most receptions in the league by a TE last year. That's not even mentioning the fact that he's a big part of why our run game managed to get Darren Freaking McFadden 1000 yards in 2/3 of a season. We went 4-12. Do you really think forcing Jason Witten into retirement should be an offseason priority? Go play Madden.

Zero drops last year, despite regularly being the target of "bail-out" passes with a defender all over him. ZERO!

Awful thread.

I'm not saying he's bad, I just want to see where people stand on his retirement. I thought he should of went to the pro bowl. I was wondering if we were to win the super bowl in the next 3 years would you want him to retire with the win. The main reason I started the thread was because I read an article this morning on him being questioned about him retiring, I couldn't find the link, but if I remember correctly it was on sportsday.***BANNED-URL***

I don't want Witten to retire, replacing him isn't a priority. I wanted to see people's opinions on how long others think he has left.

At this point, people are responding more to LocimusPrime's nonsense.

I just wanted to make sure everyone understands this thread is not about Witten retiring soon, it's about how long do you think he has, Witten said age 39-40 and I wanted to see who would be ok with that.

Yawn. Hes slow, old, weak, gets tackled by 175 lb corners, false starts every game, runs a 5.5 40 now. Its fine that hes on the team, but he doesnt scare any defenses anymore plus he has a huge salary for A TE.

Have you seen his beer gut lately? And how much time he devotes to hisphysical conditioning? Dont try to tell me hes working hard when i see pics of how flabby he is getting 8 mill a year. Smh
