I want them to feel comfortable about drafting a QB because the grade is there.

I feel good about the consensus grades being there. As much, or more than whether or not the Cowboys' individual grade is there. These guys do not have a track record close to good enough for me to have faith in them, especially in terms of what they've done at quarterback.

He's the messiah on defense, Hardy was suppose to be last year. None of the changes they ever make are philosophical and coaching related..

How about pairing Hardy with Thornton, you know... I mean I'm not a genius, but at least Hardy will play with a guy that doesn't get blown off the ball by a single OL and actually takes up double-teams, maximizing the impact of Greg and TC..

This is basically the first time in years, Dallas has the opportunity to pair a DE with LEGITIMATE DTs...

I totally agree. Only this team can fix one problem position while at the same time open up another!

That's one factor at play here with the frugal FA period. Frederick, Martin and Collins. They all need to be re-signed and all three will command big deals.

I'm not totally clear on this plan either. If plans for the future are 'cap-strapping' this team now - when they're not winning - are they even worth it for the future? Will it be better or worse when all three are older and much more costly?

And on top of it, do you want to then be scrambling around trying to find your answer at quarterback when even the mediocre ones like Sam Bradford are making $18 million a year?

Even with crazy money deals, I'm seeing teams signing players to contracts that they can get out of in about two years. In fact, the Eagles were able to dump several terrible contracts after just one year! And improve their draft position in the process! And yet, here this team sits, stuck with Brandon Carr.

I wish this team had some measure of that same flexibility.

The DE that went to the Cardinals from the Patriots seems like a pretty interesting player. Wonder why no one here mentions that trade when discussing the season for acquiring talent?

I'd bet the word got out about the Pats seeking to trade the kid,. And he appears to be a player. And wouldn't that have made a difference?

Not much this team has done interests me this season.

And I agree they will draft for need instead of the future.

Being relevant doesn't seem to matter much.

You mean Chandler Jones? The guy with the bizarre synthetic marijuana incident? The guy in the league drug program and one blunt away from a suspension? Yeah, that is a guy we should be targetting and giving away draft picks and players for. Might as well just keep Hardy.

it's amazing people still say things like this.

Looks like they did exactly what they intended to me. Looked at what was there but not over pay for average or over the hill talent
fans gripe at Carr contract then gripe when we don't do it again

This.

Sign someone like Weddle or Mario Williams and have them underperform in '16 just like they did in '15 and you'd hear many of the folks that posted in this thread complain about how the Cowboys wasted their cap space by signing guys to ridiculous contracts... Sure as the sun coming up.

Eh. The failure of the past twenty years of this organization makes me take anything they say as far as "building" a team to win with nothing but a grain of salt. It's not like there is anything that can be looked back upon by the men and charge where they can say, "Hey, just calm down now. I know you fans can get a little uppity and restless, but trust us, we know what we're doing!"

It wasn't perfectly clear when Long stood them up...or when Jason Garrett was on the phone selling Weddle to take the contract they offered him, or when they spent 2 days trying to sign Carroll. Or when they were going back and forth with Murray and Forte...

Why pretend our offseason has gone as planned when it obviously has not...the FO has attempted to sign players but for whatever reason they failed to do so and now it's caused the team to shift focus and pin their hopes on the draft.

I've said just this in other threads. I'm not pretending anything. FA drove prices higher than we've been willing to pay, period. Some of us just accept that easier than others.

FA isn't over, though. Before it ends, we'll sign some players. Then it's on to the draft.

Isn't building through the draft what most sensible people have been saying for years? I guess I just fail to understand the outrage for not overpaying for average players.

I'm glad Stephen isn't using the injury excuse for our season last year. It was a factor, no doubt, but you should be able to win more than 4 games even with your best two players out.

There is a wide chasm between overpaying for average players and hitting the bargain bin at KMart.

We'll see. Young edge rushers who kiss the 10-sack mark get paid.

Believe me, I hope you're right about it.

I'm just not as optimistic right now with him coming off of back surgery and potentially not having Hardy playing opposite him.

Great post. I don't know if it's more arrogance or ignorance. If it were me, I wouldn't have the gall to even pretend like I'm the voice of reason any more.

Hard to build through the draft when they do almost nothing in the 3rd-7th rounds. So while I agree with the philosophy I don't have any faith that the people are in place to accomplish it.
