Music Icon Prince Dead at 57

I'm not taking anything away from Michael Jackson, because I think he was a phenomenal performer. I just think Prince was so talented in so many ways, from playing and singing to song writing. Just look at the songs he wrote and gave away to other artists that they had hits with.

Prince was very talented. Risky. It worked.
He helped Stevie nicks with her song stand back.

Nicks has often told the story of how she wrote the song. She wrote it on the day of her marriage to Kim Anderson on January 29, 1983. The newlyweds were driving up to San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara when Prince's song "Little Red Corvette" came on the radio. Nicks started humming along to the melody, especially inspired by the lush synthesizers of the song, and "Stand Back" was born. They stopped and got a tape recorder and she recorded the demo in the honeymoon suite that night. Later, when Nicks went into the studio to record the song, she called Prince and told him the story of how she wrote the song to his melody. He came to the studio that night and played synthesizers on it, although his contribution is uncredited on the album. Then, she says, "he just got up and left as if the whole thing happened in a dream."

You make a lot of good points. You are forgetting about how MJ had influenced generations of choreography and music videos.

MJ is at the top his class. He had that "it" factor very early on.

Prince was great but not on the level of Michael.

You hit upon the word for MJ... "Influencer".

Maybe Prince was the greatest artist but MJ was the greatest influencer. Singing, dancing and the ability to create an amazing video– Jackson was at the top of the class.

But anyway both passed away too young.

Made me think.
These larger than life singers/entertainers. Things just get too big and their walls come crumbling down at very early age.

That Harvey Levin, he gets the real info... It seems earlier than big news outlets.

IMO Prince was a better muscian that MJ.
MJ was his equal as a vocalist, and performer.. and was overall more iconic, partly because some of his audience grew up with him.

Early reports (as of yesterday) was he overdosed on percocete his initial incident... Which he was prescribed after double hip replacement surgery.

Regardless. with all do respect to you, and those that are showing appreciation, I do think its easy to skip this thread if you don't have respect for his death... especially since as of now it still hasn't been announced what exactly happened...

Both Icons indeed, and Michael was great. To me though Prince was greater for his musicianship, and song writing ability and charity work. Michael didn't write his own songs, play any instruments, and got too weird at the end. You have to remember Prince also wrote many hits for other artists. He was selfless when it came to music but could be a bit thin skinned, and launched many other careers.

I like Princes vocals better than Michaels, but Michael before his weird days had better charisma and was a better dancer. Michael always tried to seem innocent. Prince you knew wasn't innocent. Two completely different artists.

Prince while not as good a dancer as Michael also had his moves in his younger days:

I've been seeing this argument on the internet. Just posted this on facebook on it. It's how I feel on the subject. And though I think Prince is the bigger music legend for my reasons, it doesn't take away from the fact that Jackson is a legend too:

I'm seeing a lot of debate as to who was greater during the 1980's, Prince or Michael Jackson. Both were definitely Icons, but it is Prince. Here are my points:

Musicianship: Prince excelled at every musical instrument put in his hands. He was an exceptionally gifted guitarist, and could take over for any musician on the band. Michael Jackson didn't play any instruments.

Songwriting: Prince wrote all of his own songs and was prolific. He ended up sharing many with other artists and giving them hits to launch their careers. Thereis a vault containing many songs and unreleased recordings. His songs will be coming out for years. Michael Jackson didn't write his own songs, Quincy Jones took care of that for him.

Vocals: Most might agree that Jackson had the better pure voice. It's a hard point to argue. Prince had a better range and THAT SCREAM. Michael was more smooth and happy, where Prince was more dynamic and angry.

Dancing: Jackson is the King of this. Prince was good at this, but no one is even close to Jackson.

Reputation: Jackson always tried to appear innocent, and did a lot of bubble gum stuff. People knew him from his days on the Jackson 5. He tried to keep that innocent image up. He wasn't innocent. We don't need to bring up the last years of his life. No one ever thought of Prince as innocent, and he hit home on a lot of real issues. Listen to the song Controversy and you will know what was going on early in his career. HE could be dirty, thought provoking, and controversial. He lightened up as the years went by, but by far his lyrics were much more powerful.

Revolution: Jackson was awesome in the pop R&B genre, and that is what he kept doing. Prince was able to mix so many genres like R&B, Jazz, Hard Rock, Psychedelia and Classical and make it work. Things musicians would tell you couldn't work, but he made it work with his song writing abilities. He truly created a new style of music that changed the face of music. Later bands like Primus would also experiment like this and it lead to better music.

Ownership: Prince fought hard against the music industry to have music artists own their own rights to their music and how it is used. We all know he changed his name to a symbol. Jackson seemed to go along with it, though his sisters have definitely had it with how the music industry is run. Prince started the fight.

Acting: Prince in "Purple Rain". Michael Jackson in "The Wiz". Case closed.

Prince and The Revolution was an extremely appropriate name for that band. Jackson was great, but Prince was the true game changer in the world of music. Prince did Revolutionize music in the 80's, and shook the music industry into a whole new reality of what can be.
