I don't understand this logic regarding the Jaylon Smith pick

So the Cowboys got a lot of heat for taking Jaylon Smith, a guy who likely won't be able to contribute this coming season, in the second round. They also got heat for the Zeke pick but let's not get into that. The biggest argument about taking Jaylon Smith is that he won't be able to contribute this coming season, and that we need defensive help now. So am I supposed to believe that a guy like Kevin Dodd for example was gonna be the difference between us winning the Super Bowl, or hell even just the division next season? I don't buy that for a second. He'd probably get like 2-3 sacks and play half the snaps. But I tell you what... a healthy Jaylon Smith very well could make that difference the following season. The guy is essentially a 2017 top 5 pick for us. I personally love the pick and just don't understand the folks complaining about not getting immediate help. The draft is for the FUTURE. And Jaylon could and should be a huge part of our defense moving forward once he gets healthy.

The reason I mention this is because I was listening to 105.3 The Fan in the car and on The Ben & Skin show they were trying to make this argument... saying we should've got the immediate help. Anyone agree with them and if so, why? Just curious

With the 34th pick we should've got immediate help or traded down and selected him.

Zeke and Jaylon were both horrible value.. Fair enough they didn't want to chance losing Zeke but nobody was going to take Jaylon that high.

The way I see it is if he comes back healthy by 2017 it'd be a huge win for us. The only thing I'm worried about is if he heals according to plan - if he does, regardless of whether he played this year it's a great pick.

It seemed like the pick with EElliot was a win now with keeping romo vertical as a central theme. The Smith pick had most of us looking for another genius strategy from Valley Ranch it's logic still eludes many. The pick is in these are the cards it does no good to go on about this, let see how this hand plays out.

Rookies never contribute their first year. We need to draft for need at this specific position. And all of our rookies from last year are already busts.

Logical consistency isn't a strong suit around here.

But I tell you what... a healthy Jaylon Smith very well could make that difference the following season.

It's all about Romo. If you believe Romo really has 3-4 good years left, then hey, great pick.

I think most people suspect that is good ol fashion Jerry optimism. Romo has taken more than his fair share of shots in his career and he is not a Brady who immediately dumps off the ball at the first sign of duress. I don't think he will age as gracefully as Brady, especially with what is now a suspect collarbone.

Smith's essentially rookie year could come in Romo's last for all we know. If you believe in winning now, as the Zeke pick indicated, the Smith pick is a little more curious.

And that's before we even get into the long term risk involved with nerve damage, which is always a bit of a crapshoot anyway. This team is not in a position to be gambling with high 2nd round picks.

Double E is going to run for damn near 2 grand this year..

The Smith pick had me kinda wondering what the hell we were thinking..

I wish we would of got Ragland if we were going to pick lb.

I hope not. I don't want any of our backs ever getting 400 carries. I know people dream of Emmitt but he is the exception and not the rule.

They wanted to use the second round pick to try and hit a home run, at least that's how it seems. It was going to be Lynch and when that didn't work it became Smith. Both have more chance of being an impact pick then grabbing pretty much any other player there, other then potentially Jack.

I wouldn't have used 34 on him, no.

Hoping after burning this year with zero return for a very high (almost 1st round) pick in year one, they get a lot out of him going forward.

It's the groupthink du jour. I would advise to not take radio sports reporting seriously.

I give it 50-50 that he plays at some point this year given what we know about the state of his nerve regeneration.

This.

If he overstays his welcome on PUP and the grace period that follows, they can IR him at the end of the season. As of now, I see no reason not to let him ride it out as long as possible to see if he can contribute at all this season, even if it is for only a few regular-season games.

We won't have to , there are going to be at least 3 backs , so we have to share the carries, per game 15 to EE, 10 to Moriss, 5-10 to 3rd back, should be plenty . IF we can afford that many carries meaning that we have the lead and draining clock.

We have to win now, there is no immediate future beyond Romo. Picking players in the deafacto first round that might be pro bowlers 3-4 years down the line but can't contribute this year or probably not much next year, is ******* stupid.

The draft is about collecting talent. Smith was probably the most talented player in this draft. There is the injury risk, but if the doc says he will fully recover, then you take him.

I have no problem with the pick or where he was taken.

Fans and media value instant gratification way too much. Its a big reason why media drafts boards become so inaccurate during the actual draft

Wanted immediate help in Ogbah the most, even Dodd was a kinda option simply because Noah Spence was too much of a risk, blame that on Randy Gregory.

That left Reggie Ragland, Jaylon Smith and Myles Jack up next before the talent dropped off permanently into the 2nd tier, but both LBs had red flags on health as well.

In the end Smith is more talented and less of a long-term injury liability than the other two top Players left @ # 34. Begrudgingly agree with the choice not having immediate impact especially considering his current physical status, compared to what was being reported.

Plus Jaylon Smith is a real fit for the 4/3 which is a huge advantage. Even New Englands' 3/4 was revved up to take him late in the 2nd, they usually draft LBs admirably.

All signs are pointing up for Jaylon Smith especially considering how the rest of the Draft fell for Dallas landing help on the Dline in Collins and Tapper.

As much as they liked Ogbah (proabably more than I did, anyway) , I'm surprised they didn't just lock him down by trading up 2 slots with trade happy Cleveland.
.
They could even slightly overpay and go from 34 to 32 by swapping a early 4th for an early 5th if they really wanted him badly.
. Really thought they'd do that for with Dodd or Ogbah sitting there.
They did turn in the card quickly at 34 though for Smith.
