I don't understand this logic regarding the Jaylon Smith pick

On one hand, bloke, the Cowboys needed immediate help. On the other, this rehabbing wonder would not have made a dent in the wall we are up against as far as defense.
Nothing wrong with rehab except you are wounded, rehabbing, not playing and getting rusty. Good lord, Sir Jerry you pick talent not potential.
Asinine, mates. Madness. Yes, next year rusty and 2 years out of college and boom! Going against the best in the NFL. What could possibly go wrong, blokes?

Are there any adults in the Dallas Cowboys franchise?

So what's your point ???? :welcome:

So the Cowboys got a lot of heat for taking Jaylon Smith, a guy who likely won't be able to contribute this coming season, in the second round. They also got heat for the Zeke pick but let's not get into that. The biggest argument about taking Jaylon Smith is that he won't be able to contribute this coming season, and that we need defensive help now. So am I supposed to believe that a guy like Kevin Dodd for example was gonna be the difference between us winning the Super Bowl, or hell even just the division next season? I don't buy that for a second. He'd probably get like 2-3 sacks and play half the snaps. But I tell you what... a healthy Jaylon Smith very well could make that difference the following season. The guy is essentially a 2017 top 5 pick for us. I personally love the pick and just don't understand the folks complaining about not getting immediate help. The draft is for the FUTURE. And Jaylon could and should be a huge part of our defense moving forward once he gets healthy.

The reason I mention this is because I was listening to 105.3 The Fan in the car and on The Ben & Skin show they were trying to make this argument... saying we should've got the immediate help. Anyone agree with them and if so, why? Just curious

The crazy thing is, I honestly think people would have preferred the Cowboys to actually trade that 2nd for a 1st in 2017...provided there is no one there worth taking in their collective opinion.

The Smith pick is somewhat irrelevant IMO. Could the 34th pick helped this year? Sure. But then, a lot of people wanted S Karl Joseph, who went much higher than expected. The Cowboys will play 2 LB's on over 60% of their defensive snaps...one of which would be Sean Lee if healthy. Smith AND Elliott were both potential top 10 picks. Get Smith healthy, and let him assume one of the top 2 LB roles in 2017...when McClain is again a free agent.

And IMO...he also definitely has the ability to affect the pass rush in positive fashion.

With the 34th pick we should've got immediate help or traded down and selected him.

Zeke and Jaylon were both horrible value.. Fair enough they didn't want to chance losing Zeke but nobody was going to take Jaylon that high.

if the eagles are lauded for giving up so much to move up to #2 to take a guy who might not take a snap this year, then there's absolutely no reason to criticize dallas for staying put and taking jaylon smith at #34. none.

Vegas has the over and under for zeke set at 900 yds. What do you think? Take the over?

If healthy, it's a given that ZEKE will reach 1000 rushing yds.

He fits the Dallas Cowboys Zone Blocking Scheme to near perfection.

At first, I didn't like your Farmers Branch routine but at least you stuck with it and I respected your views on football and found it, at least somewhat entertaining.. But this Australian crap has me baffled, thinking maybe you really are suffering a true identity crisis.

I just can't imagine the reality of the world you live in.

Australian crap? No, my ancestors were never convicts exiled to that place of ruffians.

Relax, chap. Just be glad you dont live in Farmers Branch. It is a challenge to live here so get off my back, mate.:)

Can we forever retire the argument that we shouldn't be spending resources at defense because it takes a few years to develop on that side of the ball?

Well how about we get the freaking process started and start investing more premium picks to that side of the ball?

Having said that I get the Jaylon pick. Let's hope the guy gets healthy. The prognosis is encouraging.

Fact: He is past the 16 week of his knee rehab and was cleared to return to athletic activity.
Fact: His nerve casing was left intact meaning that at worst he has a type 3 nerve injury.
Fact: The interior of the nerve regens to the distal region at a rate of 1 inch per month.
Fact: The length of the peroneal nerve in question is 6 inches.
Fact: His surgery took place in early January. Meaning 6 months postop is early July.
Fact: He started having sensation in the leg in February and new sensations are coming in daily.
Fact: Training camp starts July 30.

Now please explain what about my take is comical. If the nerve starts firing in early July, he could in theory be ready for TC. That is absolute best case scenario but I put the 50-50 take for during the season not the entire thing.

Your logic appears to be quite logical. Why some may not feel the same is quite illogical.

Barring injury, Zeke will battle for the rushing title this year. He will shatter the team rookie rushing record and make the Pro Bowl. Put me down for $100 on the over.

That was my immediate reaction, but Reality and others posted that the plan was to take Ogbah or Dodd with the 3rd pick of the second round and then trade back up for Jaylon Smith in the late 2nd.

But the unexpected happened - Ogbah and Dodd went in the first two picks. With only five minutes on the clock, Dallas didn't have much time to trade down ten picks so they just selected Jaylon Smith at 34. Not optimal, but its understandable.

And like others have said, Ogbah or Dodd would be unlikely to take more reps in the rotation than Tapper would anyway.

I'm liking the Tapper pick more and more each day... can't wait to see him in action during pre-season.

Well.... Lets see, first pick to win now... Second to win later... Pretty simple logic to me...

I asked the same thing. Elliot was a bad pick because we didn't "need him" despite him being one of the best players in the draft and he can actually come in and contribute unlike MOST rookies. We pick Jaylon Smith who can't contribute now like MOST rookies, yet people are in a uproar as if we threw away a 2nd round pick. What was the alternative? If the alternative was Jack then fair enough. I get that argument. I don't agree with it but I understand it.

But being upset that we didn't draft a DE or LB in that 2nd round as if they were going to be a major factor anyway? Its just mindless crying.

The kangaroo court of this board would bash such a prediction either way, so go ahead and bash away in between watching cartoons young man.

Clarification:
I predict Zeke Elliott will battle for the rushing title. I'm hoping he has an injury free rookie season. I would bet on it, realizing he may get hurt and cause me to lose my bet.

Anylists dont agree with the Smith pick because they can't say if it was worth it for another 2 years. Job security jepodized.

I wouldn't have used 34 on him, no.

Hoping after burning this year with zero return for a very high (almost 1st round) pick in year one, they get a lot out of him going forward.

yeah I see it same as you, I think though they felt strongly he would heal, and be great
like he was in college.
They are so sure he will heal, they are planning to use him this year lol.
I dont know what they are thinking there, like maybe play him last couple games or in playoffs.

As a rookie, I dont know he can come in and be effective late in season, but that is what they are thinking.

So by not trading back they got him for sure, same with elliot.

I think we will lead the league in rushing (provided no one get hurt) and have a middle of the road defense. That should allow us to take the Division. No one in this Division scares me. Way too many holes. Philly is a dumpster fire. Washington has no defensive or offensive line and their secondary sucks. New York has no defensive line and a very poor offensive line and Eli looks like he has regressed the past two years. This should be our year. The Smith pick who knows. Very high risk with some upside. Regardless of what everyone says, even if he wasn't hurt he wasn't a Lawrence Taylor type LB.

Jaylen Smith was the best pick we made in the last decade, he will turn our defense into an offense, teams won't be looking forward to playing against our defense anymore.
