If Swaim didn't drop those two passes, he would have been perfect throwing the ball. My only concern with Dak is the possible lack of staff to develop a QB. Cassell saying he couldn't find a qb coach is problematic. Weeden going to the Texans and winning a game, while unable to do so with us is also problematic. Thank God at least we have Romo that Dak can learn from, but we really need to make sure the proper coaching is in place for him to really develop.

Really good observation.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Wade Wilson is still gone from camp for medical reasons. Tony is the best and only mentor at the quarterback position of anyone outside of Garrett and he doesn't have the time to commit to it. There are so many subtleties and nuances to the position that It's fortunate Romo is at a point in his career where he can help him. It also helps that Romo's a great guy.

Remember Brett Favre wanted nothing to do with Aaron Rodgers.

I know a lot of fans have been down on Wilson for some time and our whole backup quarterback situation has been on his watch. The whole mentoring of Dak is definitely something to watch.

All I care about is that he keeps clearing the hurdles in front of him. Doing it in a preseason game against a good DL is nice. But it's one game, without game planning and without a lot of effort being put into stopping him. He's got a long way to go, and a lot of hurdles to clear before I'd consider him a comfortable backup to Tony this year. I'm beyond happy with how he looked, but there's only so much that can be proven in one preseason game.

And, for the record, Tony has nothing to fear from Dak Prescott this season, and he knows it. Tony's the QB here for 2016 and 2017, no matter what happens short of injury.

I wonder if ESPN will report this or conveniently ignore it. Regardless, I'm happy we have someone better than Weeden and Cassell, should Romo miss a game or two.

Steven A Smith was laughing for having Dak/Showers as backups. 'Cause as we know, he watches every practice and follows the coaches around on the field. lol. Pretty sure he'll laugh on Monday about Dak's performance.

I knew this was coming...tap the brakes!

Yeah, playing the worst team with the most vanilla possible scheme is a game that means nothing is a far, far cry from playing a regular season game with starters and a week of preparation. Dak has a couple of years of work and learning ahead of him.

NFL quarterbacks have to take the stairs - not the elevator.

It's night and day comparing the regular season with preseason especially the first preseason game. Dak played great and everyone knew a few FANS would go overboard over his performance. It wouldn't surprise me if there's not at least one poster on this board that would like to bench Romo and start Dak opening day. Lol Next week he could look terrible and that will bring many back down to earth. What's encouraging is he looked better than any of the young QBs we've brought in the past few years.

He showed arm strength, accuracy and the ability to get the ball down the field but he still has a long way to go. If he has to play during the regular season and plays like he did yesterday, THEN they'll be a reason for many to get real excited about him. I've seen some young QBs look very good in preseason only to get killed during the regular season so everyone needs to tap the brakes on Dak until we see a lot more of him and he has to take some regular season snaps. If he can come in and help us win a game if Romo goes down a lot of us are going to get excited about him.

Sorry but you're delusional.
Well I was just kidding, but I doubt if romo played the whole half, he would have had a 154 qb rating.
It was just one ps game but Dak looked as good as a QB can look.

Have to wait and see how he does in the next 3, and how Romo looks when he plays.
It could be the Tony finally has some legit competition??

I agree and even more than just the throws was he had a Russell WIlson like self-awareness of the field. The slide was a great example of that. As you know there is nothing, nothing more important than making sure we have the next guy after Tony because if you don't, you become the Bills with great talent on both sides of the ball every year who flounder without a quarterback. That's a special kind of hell.

More important than any QB rating was his poise and situational awareness I was very impressed.

the road is going to have many potholes but the kid impressed the hell out of me last night.

Everyone should be elated with what we seen with Dak. One game can tell a lot about what a QB can and can't do.

I still remember the time when Romo played his first every preseason game. He came in late and we were trailing. He took the team down the field and snuck it in on 4th down and going against the wishes of the coaches. I knew then that we have something special with Romo.

I feel the same way about Dak as well. It seems he makes everyone around him better. When was the last time we seen Devin Street catch a ball?

Sure its only one game and only a few drives. But I think Dak has "it" factor and can be a QB that can give the other team fits.

Nope, I'm convinced.

I mean he played against a makeshift preseason Ram defense. What other proof do you need that he is the next Roger Staubach?
That makeshift preseason Ram defense is their starting line up. Aaron Donald, Coples, Brockers, Trumaine Johnson, Ogletree, etc....they were all out there in that 80yd drive down the field. And that was without Zeke, Tyron or Witten on our side. Is that the Dak we can expect everytime? I don't know, but the Rams were "all-hands on deck" for the 1st couple of drives and our QB2 looked damn good.

It's a game-like situation that tells you 1 thing: is this kid able to play in the NFL? And even if he struggles, do you see anything that tells you with good coaching he can grow into a good player?

Goff may still turn into Brett Farve 2.0. Dak could turn into the next RGIII. We have no idea.

But what we do know from watching this game is that right now Dak looks poised, has field awareness, shows leadership, doesn't seem too small for the game or overwhelmed.

A guy who looks lost from the start, still trying to adjust to the speed of the NFL game, and stumbles badly right out of the gate like Goff did last night, that's definitely not a good sign.

Both having had the same amount of time with their new teams, Dak looked in command of the game, seeing the field, leading a team. Goff looked awkward, apologetic, still trying to get a feel for the game.

It's a hopeful sign for Dak's future. And right now that's all it is. A hopeful sign.

Ok if you're kidding I take it back. There are some on here that are not Romo fans, so that is good to know. My mistake that it was meant in good fun.

But yeah I really liked what I saw from Dak as well. I'm with ya.

good post, and I agree.
If Goff or Wentz had the game Dak had, what would the media and those teams fans be saying ??
They would be saying they should start game one.

Dak was a 4th round pick so people are reluctant to say that or think that.
On top of that we have tony romo, so how good would someone have to be to unseat tony ??
Well the answer is no matter how good they are Tony would still be the starter game one.

Thats why I feel sorry for showers, he doesnt have the major school credentials, and wasnt even drafted,
so I dont know if he will ever get a shot at starting on some team.
I didnt think much of him last year, but he looks better this year, and he has the desire.

And it is just one PS game, but we will know more by end of PS.
