You have no choice but to have "blind optimism" when you have no idea what you are doing as a GM. It was idiotic to think Romo would play 5 more years. Romo looked nothing himself with that awkward slide attempt. The gig is up. I wish him well. But Jerry, Jason and the rest of the crew can no longer hide behind the Romo magic!

The slide was only awkward because he was hit from behind and crushed into the ground just as it started. Kind of hard to slide normal with a guy jumping on your back.

Unfortunately as painful as it is to say this. Romo will not play this season. Spine is weight bearing and unless he is going to lay on his back for 10 weeks, it's going to take some stress and delay the healing process. Best case is it is HEALED in 8-10 weeks, but that wont mean Romo is ready to play in 8-10 weeks. His back muscles, as well as most of his muscles will atrophy during the healing. He may be ready to start throwing (a back torqueing motion) in December, but he wont be able to play NFL football until January or beyond. He's almost 40, not 18. These are the kind of injuries you just hope to be able to come back from and live a normal life, not play NFL football. Romo is Romo though, so we will see.

No, the slide was awkward even before the guy tried to tackle him. He was halfways sitting up.

Yet people are on here calculating which game he'll start back at. This place amazes me. The delusion is running rampant.

Actually, traumatic compression fractures heal pretty consistently with no ongoing problems.

I do agree that the issue might be more the fact that Romo won't be able to work his core while he is healing.

Has there been any injures similar to this one is the past? How long were they out for? I tried googling it but only got a bunch of Romo articles

I didn't say anything about ongoing problems or inconsistent healing. His fracture can take anywhere from 4-10 weeks to heal. In Romo's case it will likely be 10, but that wont mean he is ready to step back on NFL field, he likely won't be ready to see the field until about 5-7 months from now. 3 months for the fracture to heal, and just as long to rehab the surrounding musculature and soft tissue, before considering return to play in contact sports. At least that's how I advise my patients. That puts him at a Feburary return, hey at least he can play in the Superbowl.

So which is it, 4-10 weeks for the fracture to heal, or 3 months?

let's see.....Romo barely had a TC and now has a broken back.....he is 36 and coming off several injuries.... he will still need time to practice and rehab his muscles when the bones heal.....I would go with the longer prediction....8-10 weeks

If I ever had one issue with Romo, it's his unwillingness to just throw the damn ball away. :( This time, it really cost him.
Agreed! Agreed! Agreed! Has been telling that a long time , its a preseason game for godsake !

I want to believe you are a make-believe Dr., however, I've got a feeling you not...

even against Philly last year on the play he got hurt, he had ZERO protection, 5 vs 6 and he had to throw the ball immediately........instead he tried to pull it down and he lost the handle....the defender went for the hit on Romo instead of the ball and that was that

I think he needs to consult with the voices in his head because his diagnosis is a lot more pessimistic than most of the other Internet doctors I've seen (all of them having in common they've seen none of Tony's records). I guess David Carr must have been Jesus Christ himself supposedly coming back from the same injury in just 3 weeks.
