If Romo stays healthy he has 2-3 good years and makes those franchises instant contenders

We also need him because we are ready to contend now and there are many many circumstances under which we may need Romo in the next year or 2

His contract can be absorbed precisely because Dak is so cheap for the next 3 years

These factors increase his worth to us and therefore his trade value for us should be high. That is what should be the driving force, his value to us and potential value to contending franchises

Tony realizes his injury mortality as much as anyone. I think both Dak and Romo are excellent QBs. I'm sure the fact that Dak has been so successful for a young rookie is weighing heavily in his favor but that he's subject to learning much more before he's at Romo's level in terms of reading defenses and overall understanding of his craft. Nevertheless, what's happened isn't going to change. I think it'll work out for the best in the end but then, only time will tell.

Great post!

There's no question that Romo is the better quarterback in terms of experience and getting the most out of this offense. The only questions I have with him is: 1. Will he/can he stay healthy and
2. Will he, in his efforts to make a play, turn the ball over down the stretch.

I don't have those questions with Dak, but I'm not certain Dak can keep up or outduel Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning, or/and Matt Ryan to get to the Super Bowl. That doesn't mean I think Romo should start. I just think everyone is going to have to be tuned in, the offense, the defense and the special teams in order to advance to the Super Bowl.

I'm glad we have a bye, but I hate I (we) have to wait two weeks until the Cowboys play again and wait to see how ready we are for the playoffs.

My expectations of what may happen is irrelevant. I'm not the general manager of any NFL team (and I definitely don't have a preference for Johnnie Walker Blue Label :p ). I hold zero power in how any transaction of any kind involving Romo shall transpire. My comment addresses a possibility I believe is very real. Eventually, the future will dictate whether my hypothesis had any merit whatsoever.

Because cutting Romo won't relieve us of his entire contract. I believe I read it'll relieve us of $5 million, which is the market rate for a Kyle Orton level backup.

Situation: Dak Prescott became the unquestioned starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys in 2016.

Question: What would I, DallasEast--moderator, grandfather, father, husband, brother, and a certified nut who plays Star Wars Battlefront WAY too freaking much--do with Tony Romo if I could make the decision based on this very real reality?

Hmm.

I would release him next June.

I want the franchise to move on as quickly as humanly possible in the upcoming offseason based on the decision it made in the least problematic way possible.

I could not care less if Romo ends up on a division or conference rival, AFC or NFC contender or pretender.

I want the front office to finalize whatever plan for addressing quarterback depth in 2017 and beyond the moment they made the decision. And if releasing Romo outright without strings, crushing the dreams of drafting completely unverifiable surefire Pro Football Hall of Fame bound college superstars, and pisses off one, two, ten, 100, 10,000, a million+ people, it would please me in ways not printable on a family forum.

I am the worst Cowboys fan ever. Dumb. As. Hell. Yep. I said it.

The word "better" is subject to definition in terms of what "better" entails. Ideally, a QB's qualities should include an ability to remain healthy, despite being subjected to violent hits and physical punishment. It also would ideally include possessing the ability to avoid forcing passes to make plays when the opposing defense doesn't allow it to be done relatively free of risk. Both of those things are things that must be true before the word "better" appropriately applies in the context of any QB's abilities.

Dak may or may not be able to keep up or outduel Rodgers, Manning, Ryan or perhaps even another elite QB like Brady, for instance. It's also entirely possible that Romo might lack the ability to outplay them as well when the time comes to do so or if circumstances simply do not favor it. Certainly factors more than simply one individual can't cause a team to win. Overall team talent enters into the picture far more surely than what one individual is likely to produce on his own.

As far as the waiting is concerned, the bye week should allow our walking wounded to recover sufficiently to play at peak physical efficiency by the time our first game comes about. Hopefully, that waiting period will be well worth the wait once the Cowboys take the field. That fact at least affords me some measure of comfort and makes the wait that much more advantageous. I'm fine and dandy with it in that respect. Let's see how it goes when the time comes. Hopefully, it'll help to provide an edge that we might very possibly need to win.

More likely he knows he is better but the coach and owner had to do what was best for the franchise long term so he decided to handle it as classy as he possibly could because that is who he is.

I think he is VERY capable of having a couple of more seasons like 2014 or better.
No doubt in my mind whatsoever.
He is more fit and overall stronger--arm and core strength--than then.
But I don't blame those who think otherwise
It's completely understandable.

Dallas is in great shape with Dak.
Should interesting to see where Romo goes..assuming he does go
