At some point he failed another test before October resulting in a 10 game suspension
In November word leaked his missed another test
He quietly appealed the latest missed test and finished his 14 games off
He returned for Games 15 and 16 while still appealing his newest failure
His appeal was heard yesterday and he lost

Going by what I've read, the 10 game suspension was for a missed test, not a failed test.

He then missed another test during the regular season that lead to the minimum one year ban that was just upheld on appeal.

Randy Gregory will basically miss at least two seasons of football for one failed test (4 game suspension) and two missed tests (10 game suspension, one yr ban).

The missed tests don't automatically count as failures, the player must explain why it happened and it is then determined if he was deliberately avoiding the test or not. Avoiding a test will count the same as a failure, if an acceptable explanation is made the miss may result in a written warning and/or a $25K fine.

Gregory must have been found to be avoiding getting tested, likely in fear he wouldn't pass.

I understand he must be penalized for these missteps, I just don't agree with the measures that are in place and were handed out in this case.

Not when you screw up 3 or 4 times. I am good with and believe in giving people second chances but this guy is a write off. How many young players would have loved to have been in his shoes? He has no one to blame but himself. I think he has potential to be a good player now I am not sure if he has played his last game for us or any other NFL team. The ball is in his court now to do something about it, if it isn't too late.

Next year will reveal his true character. Hopefully a little patience and lots of support will help this young man see his potential as a football player and as a man.

I sure hope so because he does have potential.

Feel bad for Gregory. It's his fault, no doubt, but it's always a sad day in my view when a talented individual wastes potentially life-changing opportunities like he has. Hopefully the year off helps him and doesn't send him into even further decline.

I read that only a failed test would take it from 4 games to 14 games total
A missed test would have taken it from 4 games to 10 games total

Either way he dropped that appeal on Sept 20th

Yeah, it wouldn't have meant squat had he not played the past 2 games and actually look like a real NFL pass rusher! Sometimes I looked up and it looked like Demarcus coming around that corner with that burst he has!! :(

Right? We would not have thought twice about it until he got the chance to play 2 meaningless games.

Our wasted 2nd round risk are mounting . Imagine if we had made solid picks in those slots. It could be the difference.

From what I have cobbled together

RGregory failed a test this summer, his 5th failure because it resulted in a 4 game suspension
He then entered rehab instead of staying at Training Camp
He failed another test, possibly while in rehab resulting in a 10 game suspension
He rejoined the team in September and started working out
He then dropped the appeal of his 10 game suspension on Sept 20th
In November word leaked his missed another test
He quietly appealed the latest missed test and finished his 14 games off
He was not allowed to return 2 weeks early to begin practicing because NFL said he was "not in compliance"
He returned for Games 15 and 16 while still appealing his newest failure
His appeal was heard yesterday and he lost
He is now suspended indefinitely and can first apply for reinstatement in a year

Concerned about Gregory the person at this point. This type of news is devastating for your psyche. Could definitely lead to a free fall. Think the NFL blew it if they are really looking to get these guys help.

I wouldn't have even let him play the last 2 games . Cut him. Let it be known this won't be tolerated. What a waste . And what an arrogant idiot GM we have.

In Randy Gregory's case, the missed tests are being treated as failures.

In stage 2 of the NFL Substances of Abuse program, the first positive test result for marijuana results in a fine of two game checks.

A second failure results in a four game suspension and advancement to stage 3.

In stage 3, the first punishment for another marijuana offense is a 10 game suspension.

Any subsequent violation will result in a minimum one year calendar ban.

Any player in stage 1 may be tested as often as the medical director deems necessary. In stage 2 and 3, a player may be tested up to 10 times in a calendar month.

Given the frequency of testing Gregory has been under in stage 2 and 3, does it really matter if he missed two tests?

Could he smoke pot, skip a test, and be clean before another one was administered?

Seems unlikely to me.

The punishment simply appears too harsh.

DE Randy Gregory has the right to appeal his suspension in federal court but does not appear to have filed anything at this stage.

He might as well try this, what's he got to lose?

It'll be up to the Players Association, who would be footing his legal bills--seeing as how he has no pay check now.
