Why Charles Harris makes sense to Dallas

"If you have perused any mock drafts recently, you have likely seen an interesting trend at the end of the first round.

The Dallas Cowboys have overwhelmingly been tabbed to take Missouri defensive end Charles Harris.

Now, the interesting part is not that they took a defensive end, as that is the biggest need currently permeating Dallas’ roster. The compelling part is that Harris was the defensive end that they were projected to take.

The Missouri defensive end certainly has talent, it’s impossible to deny that, but does his talent warrant the premium pick it would take to get him?

Just like your least-favorite couple’s relationship status, the answer to that question is: it’s complicated.

The question is not just whether Harris has a skill set worthy of the 28th pick in a vacuum, it is how his skill set fits in with the Cowboys and how that translates in comparison with others who could be there at the 28th overall pick."

Looks great to me. It's still pretty early in the process. We'll see how the 1st round shakes out. He could still rise up the board and out of our range.

I talked to a Mizzou alum and football fanatic this week about Harris. He compared him to Ealy or Shayne Ray more than the freakish Aldon Smith. He said he probably wont be all pro but a solid starter at End and above avg player at the next level. He said the reason his early season tape is not so good because the coach who left for Miami was mad about not getting the DC job and gave the playbook away; Craig Kuligowski who is now at Miami. So Mizzou tried some new things that didn't work and went back to the defense they knew how to play, and Harris took off again. Said his college stats would have been more similar to Ray's if they didn't have the coaching snafu. And Ray was on a better team.

Harris is a playmaker, I wonder if he was playing heavy this year? Either way something tells me he rises up boards and might end up out of reach for Dallas.

I don't think harris is a special player but he does offer what we need. If I were a betting man I would say out of all of the players linked to Dallas Harris has the highest odds of being the pick. That could change as we get closer to the draft and more info comes out.

Is Harris the guy some here were criticizing as having no pass rush moves?

I like him to where we are picking. Would not mind him at all. McShay is high on him and said that if he can gain muscle without losing his quickness, than watch out.

I go back and forth on Harris, heard that he is a Marrinelli type guy. He does have moves and will be interesting to see what his weight really is # 235 - # 255 is what I keep seeing. For some reason, I also like me some Lawson - and it would be an interesting argument over who has the upside

Wouldn't be shocked to see Carlton, Lawson, McKinnley, and Harris all go before #28. We may be looking at CB or WR when our number comes up.

I kind of doubt that. That would mean that Garrett, Barnett, Allen, Thomas, McDowell, Charlton, McKinley, Harris, & Lawson would all be taken before the 28th pick. That's 9 edge players out of 27 picks, or 33% of the selections. (I don't believe that Lawson is first round material). Besides, there are always 4-5 players taken in the first round where eyes roll, because they weren't projected to go that high. I've pretty confident there will be a very good edge player there at 28. If not, we take a great CB at 28, then a very good DE at 60. I saw several excellent edge players at the Senior Bowl, such as Tarell Basham, Ohio, Derek Rivers, Youngstown State, Tanoh Kpassagnon, Villanova, Keiota Davis, UT-Chattanooga, & Jordan Willis, Kansas State. Still others will splash at the Combine. We will find at least two very good edge rushers to bolster our pass rush this draft, as it is full of them this year.

Don't forget Demarcus walker

My question ,is Harris substantially better then the second round rusher talent ?
Is Jabrill Pepper's rating higher then Harris so that taking a DE in the second
would allow taking Peppers in the first.

Lol I'd hope we have him higher than Peppers

Love what I have seen of Tarrel Bashim so far - but, of course right now he looks to be available at # 60. By the time the draft gets here, I'm sure he will go higher. Walker was my pet cat when the college season started, and I would still take him if the draft fell that way - but I don't know that Rod will want another SDE that can go inside on 3rd downs. See it either being a WDE or CB.

Yeah, doubtful....still wouldn't be shocked.

I know Marchota seems to think there's a chance all those players will be gone. Teams are always looking for pass rushers...all things being equal, they are usually favored.

Regardless, we should get a good player. Wr , CB, Lb....In round 2-3 I like Basham and Rivers. Not a fan of the Nova kid.
