The Dallas Cowboys still don’t have a final answer on right tackle Doug Free or at least one they are ready to accept.

Free has indicated that he plans to retire.

And the team is operating like he won’t be part of their plans next season.

Executive vice president Stephen Jones says that’s the main reason the Cowboys signed free agent tackle Byron Bell last week.

The Cowboys are hoping 2015 third-round pick Chaz Green will seize the starting job as Free’s replacement.


Bell is on the roster to push Green.

Left guard La’el Collins will be looked at as option at right tackle to increase the competition and get the best five players on the field.

“Chaz is what we hope happens,” Stephen Jones said. “The best way to get the most out of people is to create competition. I think we have that now with Bell. We have some guys in there who can compete. But when you pick an offensive lineman in the third round, the hope is for a third-round player to develop into a starter. It’s Chaz’s time. Nothing to believe he won’t other than availability.”

And that's the problem with the Chaz Green option in a nutshell.

No way they want Collins at RT IMO. They want Green to win it and Bell to back him up.

They want Collins right where they played him before.

Instead of creating two wholes to fill, they want to fill one Hole at RT with Green and the OG spot with Collins.

I appreciate the frustration, and I'm sure he's wayyyy more frustrated than any of us could possibly be by the fact that he can't stay on the field enough to work his way towards earning a large first contract. I don't think placing blame on his decisions or pain tolerance is fair.

The problem is it's been more than a herniated disc. This is his fourth year I believe and he's played in maybe two games? The rest of the time he's been "injured." He is the only lineman we have who is always injured so either he's very fragile or very lazy.

Edit: It's his 3rd year. Now that Free is retired and he is approaching a new contract I bet he miraculously overcomes his injury bug.

I may be 100% wrong on this guy but he appears to be lazy and not dependable.

I've liked what I've seen of him when he's played. But that's a limited body of work from which to choose.

Here's hoping he stays healthy this year.

He needs to find a way to step up. If he was drafted in the third because of availability concerns to me that means he could have been drafted in the first. This is his chance to play well and earn a new contract. Or he can continue to sit on the bench, where he appears to be at home.

Never at any time was he considered a first round talent. If anything, we reached.
