Stephen Jones: Chaz Green time at RT but La’el Collins to get look

The Dallas Cowboys still don’t have a final answer on right tackle Doug Free or at least one they are ready to accept.

Free has indicated that he plans to retire.

And the team is operating like he won’t be part of their plans next season.

Executive vice president Stephen Jones says that’s the main reason the Cowboys signed free agent tackle Byron Bell last week.

The Cowboys are hoping 2015 third-round pick Chaz Green will seize the starting job as Free’s replacement.

Bell is on the roster to push Green.

Left guard La’el Collins will be looked at as option at right tackle to increase the competition and get the best five players on the field.

“Chaz is what we hope happens,” Stephen Jones said. “The best way to get the most out of people is to create competition. I think we have that now with Bell. We have some guys in there who can compete. But when you pick an offensive lineman in the third round, the hope is for a third-round player to develop into a starter. It’s Chaz’s time. Nothing to believe he won’t other than availability.”

good grief. if the guy is injured, he cannot play. having competition is not going to change that.
unless they think green is too soft...

Nate Livings? He was from the Bengals. A complete disaster.

He might be talking about Jonathon Cooper, but I don't know if he ever played for Cleveland.. Thought it was Arizona and New England.. I think our best hope is Collins at LG and Green at RT.. But if Green can't stay healthy, then next best would probably be Cooper at LG and Collins at RT.

He did

No way they want Collins at RT IMO. They want Green to win it and Bell to back him up.

They want Collins right where they played him before.

Instead of creating two wholes to fill, they want to fill one Hole at RT with Green and the OG spot with Collins.

I disagree with you on this one. I think if Collins can handle playing RT, they'll play him there and let guys like Cooper or Bell vie for the left guard position. I don't think playing Collins outside "creates two holes" since he'd be filling the need at right tackle. And despite how things have gone this far, Cooper was once a very highly rated left guard, and Bell seems better suited for inside work where he can utilize his power "in a phone booth".

I love how transparent Stephen's been.

It's like someone told him he only has 6 months to live and he's in IDGAF mode.

thats because he gives the attitude he doesnt GAF. and looking at our history, none of the FO cares anymore. At the end of the year, he still gets paid, whethers 13-3, 2-14, 0-16. What does he and Garrett care, they are playing with their expensive toy.

I disagree with you.

IF we would have kept Jack Crawford for rotation...I might agree with you, but we did not so I am going to disagree with you on this one. :p;)

Hope you're right. Either way, we're gonna have to get used to this uncertainty at two of the five OL positions. If these guys do look good, they'll demand money that we're not willing to pay (see Leary). So we're gonna have to hit on guys like Cooper, Green and Collins to step up in a given year. If Cooper stays healthy and I'd a solid LG this year, he'll be gone next year. And Collins and Green are on the final 1-2 years of their deals too. That's what you have to deal with when you have three All Pros on max deals on your OL.

we are banking Cooper is solid, i agree with you there. Collins and Green, at least we have this year to see if either is worth their next price tags. so I think that can play to our favor. If we do it right.

But even if they are worth the next price tag, they won't get it from us. Leary just got paid what solid OLmen get paid. It was way out of our price range. And we have to pay Martin a mega deal soon. He'll be the highest paid OG in the league. We're gonna need to hit on cheap vets, reclamation projects, and late-round/UDFA rookies at LG and RT for the forseeable future. No way we're paying Cooper, Collins or Green if they become solid starters seeking their next paycheck. I'm not saying they have to even be All Pros - just solid, like Leary - to fall out of our price range.

well i was hoping if we have to pay 1, we pay collins, but i see your point. it sucks but Dallas doesnt play to win anymore, so i guess this is all we have left.

It is a trend that traces back to his college career. It was foolish to take him in the third and just expect his availability issues to suddenly disappear.

This is why I like both the Bell and Cooper signings. They give us some options in the likelihood that Green can't stay healthy.

I think the primary option if Green continues to have health issues will be Collins with either Bell or Cooper at left guard because I believe Collins might be an upgrade at RT while Bell has shown he's a downgrade from Free at the position but a decent guard. Cooper could be a better guard than Bell, but like Green, he'll have to prove he can stay healthy. Of course, Bell also has a health issue, but his doesn't seem to be ongoing.

If Collins stays healthy and plays up to the others' level, then we'll pay him. We didn't pay Leary because we have Collins. If we had paid Leary, then we probably would let Collins walk next year unless he moved to right tackle and proved to be a long-term answer there.

Dallas is gambling that it doesn't need Leary because it has Collins and, to some extent, Green. I don't agree with the gamble, but I understand it.
