San Pedro. Take a glass bottom. The boats range in size depending on your needs. The glass bottoms are smaller than the main charter boats.

Avalon is where you want to go. Do the night tour of the historical homes. There's also a cool "scary" tour.

Some fine restaurants on the southern end of Avalon. Rent a golf cart or you'll be exhausted by the end of the day. If you were staying longer, I would suggest Cherry Valley (Cherry Cove). Do some kayaking and snorkeling. It isn't Hawaii, but it's still pretty pristine water with lots of local fauna (the garibaldi are beautiful, and lots of abalone).

Also, there's been an uptick in Great Whites seen in the area lately (my son just did a field trip there this past year), they (and us) were warned.

If you happen to see one, consider yourself lucky. Such majestic sharks. Buy a GoPro, Waldo.

how big is the boat and how rough is the ride?
how long will avalon keep us busy?
what is in avalon beyond a few fancy shops and some nice restaurants?
probably no water stuff, so how many hours would i allocate?

If no water (shame on you), it's probably a 3-4 hr bit of fun. I spend a lot of time in the water. Avalon is kayaking, snorkeling, some historical settler homes, some decent shopping, and some above average restaurants.

The boat ride is about 1-1.5 hours. Depending on your choice of travel. The water can be a bit choppy, but you can just chill inside and have a couple drinks.

i am entertaining a member of the shanghai city delegation visiting LA on several non-working days.
i will probably be in a sports jacket (have not worn one of those for 2 years...)
