They actually save a good chunk of money by doing this instead of going the First round tender, then franchise tag route. I don't think you can give him a long term deal in 2019 with two (soon to be three) massive contracts on the offensive line already. So a franchise tag would've been in play.

2017 First Round Tender: 3.91 mil
2017 Franchise Tag for OL: 14.271 mil
Total: 2 years, 18.181 mil

This deal: 2 years, 15.4 mil

Savings: ~2.8 mil (but likely even more with the franchise tag for O-lineman increasing about 1 mil every year since 2013.)

Shrewd deal.
Exactly

and they get to prorate his 4m signing bonus over 2017-19 and save even more cap space

I am completely on board with this - and a bit of good news to change the narrative at Cowboys camp does not hurt at all.
Think he is gonna be an impressive RT for us.
Even in yesterdays broadcast by NFL network Willy Migginist (sp ?) said he was a big, mean son of a gun : )
The question becomes, if Green is fighting for, and wins the LG position - which I am not opposed to, who becomes the swing tackle ?
Almost better if Cooper wins that and Green is our swing, but if Green is the better player - it's not a bad problem to have !

Today is a win.

We signed Byron Bell for 2m and we still have Cleary

Cooper and Looney are fighting for the other spots

Given that he'd only be a RFA after this year and not an UFA, I have to assume this was all somewhat prenegotiated upfront.

I just don't see a scenario where he doesn't take this deal in the off season next year even after performing at a high level AND staying healthy, so all the risk lies with Dallas here.

I'm fine with JJ keeping his word, but if Dallas did this to buy an extra year it was kinda dumb.

I am guessing if we add all the years together, he will now be paid like a first round pick plus the fifth year option.

This is about doing right buy a guy that was literally robbed more than "paying him his worth"
Exactly, I think when Dallas signed him as RFA, JJ hinted at "making things right". I could see Collins giving Dallas a relatively friendly in 2 years.

Wrong. IF COllins plays very well at RT this season he would get a fair amount more in a deal negotiated in 2018.

Too much for a guy who hasn't proven much.

IT is a very smart move when looking at future salary cap situations. Which is something that they must look at in every signing. they have Collins locked in for 2 more years while they get Martin done. Yeah it could backfire but its a good move at this time.

What's of buying in to potential that we did with Crawford.

Funny how this is praised now.... Lord help Collins and the front office if he struggles with health (again) or a level of competition at RT (that he never yet faced).

Meanwhile everyone in this thread cheering will forget they did so.
2 yrs vs 5 yrs bro.......apples to oranges
