I guess he telling Romo to stop calling every play before it start as it can backfired on him. To be homest I don't want to hear an announcer call all the plays. If anything do what Madden was good for. Educate us on what's going on the field. At that point call a play or two as to what would be ideal in a situation.

Romo doesn't call every play. Have you actually listened?? He does it now and then. And he does educate the viewer on all aspects of the game.

Tony Romo has drawn rave reviews from many NFL fans during his first month calling NFL regular season games, but one legendary broadcaster has not been the slightest bit impressed with the former quarterback’s work.
Brent Musburger, who officially retired from calling games earlier this year to pursue a sports handicapping business, told the Vegas Stats & Information Network this week that he believes Romo is off to a terrible start.

“Tony, get off it,” Musburger said. “First of all, you’re intruding on your play-by-play man, Jim Nantz, whose just trying to give us the scene. We like to watch the game, OK? … The more years you spend away from the league, you’re gonna know less and less about the personnel that’s out on the field. So I’m blowing a ‘stop the hype’ right now.”

Brent was okay as a commentator. Nothing special, but not bad IIRC. It's fine if his opinion differs from most of ours but the tone of his opinion (kinda vindictive) suggests he is saying it for attention or he is really close friends with Sims.

Brent Musberger, Irv Cross, Phyllis George, Jimmy the Greek,,, I loved that NFL pregame show as a kid, but I've always hated that weasel Musberger. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

That was the best NFL Sunday Morning Crew ever IMO.

For the record, and nobody is going to like this, Musberger might be on to something. I am not a Musberger fan but he's right about what he says about being away from the game. If Tony wants to be around for a long period of time, he has to expand on his game, so to speak. His knowledge of players will eventually diminish.

Romo's mom doesn't even defend him as aggressive as Romo groupies on this board. WOW.. people need to chill and accept that some people don't like or don't care about Romo and have different opinion.

Having said that. I heard Romo once and I thought he was very good. Musburger is looking it from the text book of game commentary, he is ignoring the element of having a celebrity/famous former player in the booth. It attracts people/fans and I think many (if not most) viewers pay more attention to what that player says than the main commentator. My only take is his voice .. not a commentary voice (Don't shoot me)

Wow! You mean we still have objective posters who don't attack the messagenger just because he's critical of a beloved Cowboy?

Kudos!

Romo has been better than I expected. But I do not think he should be calling out plays before they happen. I think that's just showing off and it will get old. I'd rather watch the play happen and if something significant happens teach us about how that play developed, etc.

He was a Cowboys hater back in the day. He couldn't and didn't want to hide it.

Brent's right about being less familiar with personnel, schematics, etc. as they go along. Truth is that most new announcers get a lot of rave reviews when they just get outo f the league because they are so familiar with the game. Collinsworth, Simms, Dierdorf, Vermeil, etc...all got rave reviews when they first started announcing, just years removed from the game.

So it's the longevity that separates the great ones from the pretenders.

I've enjoyed Romo's announcing. His delivery could use some work and I'd rather see him focus more on the big picture of the story of the game. And he does get play calls wrong...this idea that he's predicting every play with 100% accuracy isn't the truth.

But, his insight is intriguing and the fans generally love it. That's more important than anything.

Romo is probably doing what comes natural to him. If it's a problem, CBS needs to tell him so he can try a different approach.

Very strange reaction from Musburger, it’s almost childish.
I have heard a few other people express (much more tastefully) that it’s probably not wise to rely too much on the crystal ball stuff and I agree. It can get old and at some point you’re going to have a bad day with it. My thought is that Romo is still developing his style as a broadcaster and I would be surprised if he is still doing it as much a year from now.

lol. Musburger, the epitome of what boring is . He wouldn't know what energy is or came from. Tony is energetic. Musburger the opposite. Tony is getting attention and praise from NFL fans, former NFL players, and the media (except S.A. Smith). Musburger I'm guessing still craves that and now has to bash him in the press. P A T H E T I C.

This smacks of negative publicity to me. Keeping Romo and Nantz in the news a bit longer after the overwhelmingly positive start.
