Yes technically the were a 3-4 team in 05 and 06 but they played more hybrid with mixing and matching since the personnel was mix of 3-4 types and 4-3 types. They just drafted Spears and Ware both coming from a college 4-3 defense where they were hand in the dirt DEs.
Ware was always going to be a OLB in the 3-4. Spears and Ellis were the DE's at first; then Canty took over and Ellis went to OLB in 2006.
Sad thing is that BP drafted Carpenter mainly in case that Ellis could not make the transition; if he could not then Carpenter would be the OLB and Ellis would go back to DE.

well look at Brees 2004 season. He showed what he could do that year

And? Look at 2005 and before...

of course he had potential but it takes a great coach to bring it out.. he became HOF with Payton, not before..

This is 100% false.

In 05 this defense was a straight old school two gapping 3-4 defense. There was no mixing of anything.

Jason Ferguson was signed in free agency to be the nose and anchor of parcells two gapping 3-4.

Demarcus Ware, Marcus Spears, Chris Canty, Jay Ratliff were drafted to play in this specific 3-4.

Bradie James drafted in 03 was Taylor made 3-4 inside linebacker. This is why he could t get on the field except for special teams in 03-04.

La’Roi Glover was moved to nose and Greg Ellis was moved to solb. Both were upset about the change.

Kevin Burnett was drafted to play next to James inside and because of injuries never got going till 06.

Holdovers like Kenyon Coleman were perfect fits at end in his 3-4.

Yes but to limit "wasting" ware's 1st year they put him in formations more natural to him, he had many struggles as an up pass rusher.

Umm Dallas played a 4-3 in 03 and 04 with zimmer as coordinator

Then Dallas played a 3-4 in 05 and 06 with zimmer as the coordinator.

Zimmer was giving info to the local media and trying to make parcells look bad for the 3-4 defense all year. Zimmer shines so much parcells let him play the 4-3 in week 17 vs Detroit since it was meaningless to prove a point. The defense didn’t play well again.

At the end of 06 zimmers contract was up and he went to Atalanta.

You are seriously giving some peeps burn marks on their backsides. It's pretty damned funny.

makes me think how we had zimmer, sean and clapper. and we picked the wrong guy to be our HC...

Now I worry about this Eberflus character we never hear anything about. Apparently he's on the short list of a lot of Patriots coaches, who know football. What if he goes on to be a stud while we are holding out hope as usual? Scary!

It was never between Garrett and Payton. The Saints hired Payton in 2006 while Parcells was still the Cowboys coach.

Wow, great job pulling that up. That's ugly! LOL

Just one of those convenient things no one ever mentions.

I actually just checked and I forgot linehan was gone in 06. He was the head coach in St. Louis.

So it’s on the rest of those guys and saban.

The raiders wanted to hire Payton in 05 and parcells talked him out of it

Brees played very well in 2005 also.

He was a highly regarded QB coming out of college. He wasn’t some diamond in the rough who appeared out of nowhere.

Again, potential. Not even close to a HOF career at that point and he threw 15 INTs that year after 7.

The point is, acting if Sean Payton is just some run of the mill coach is utterly idiotic...

He was so highly regarded that the Chargers were going to draft Eli until he didn't want to go there with the 1st overall pick.

He's not a run of the mill coach.....but he does a lot of moronic things at time.....he gets the pass because he has a ring.....and probably deserves it.

He coaches with guts..

His team was also screwed by the league and he lost a whole year after Bounty-gate... unlike the Patriots..

Ehhh.....we can call it guts. But I think its also fair to acknowledge the Aint's have been these past few years. I like Payton. Wish he was here.

Defense.. not offense..

And they’ve consistently been competitive..
