Garoppolo just signed the largest contract in the history of the NFL. How exactly does that happen? I get that he has potential but damn.

What sort of contract will Dak sign if he has a pretty good year this year, say comparable to his rookie year?

Correct me if i am wrong but Dak signed a 4 year deal as a 4th round pick, right? He would be a restricted free agent in year 5?

As a fourth round draft pick, Dak will be an unrestricted free agent to start the 2020 season, there is no 5th year option. So Dak is under contract for this season and one more, then he can walk.

But he is only due 600k this year and 1.7m in 2019 with the playing time raise

In 2020 they could Franchise him and although it would be for 23-25m it would be paid out over 17 weeks

If he gives the team a friendly deal after this season they could hand him a check for 20m as a signing bonus this December........ add that to the endorsements for being QB1 in Dallas and he may take an early deal

He won’t get a second contract

He will get a second contract, but what type of second contract is the key.

If he wants a deal like Stafford and Grappolo ($20+ per season), he will have to be a probowl level QB these next two seasons.

Now if he totally sucks the next two seasons, then his second contract will be more in line with being a career backup ($5 to $7 per).

Now if he is between these two extremes, not a probowler but doesn't just totally suck either, then you probably looking mid tier level ($12-$15 per)

Bottom line........in a QB starved league, Dak will still be employed..................but the level of the contract and if he is starter or not is the big ?

Good points my friend.................of course the big question is if Dak's play warrants elite pay ($20+ mill per season).

The best thing for the Cowboys is if Dak returns to probowl form..................no doubt about that.

In two more years we will know exactly what we have in Dak. Right now he's got one great season and one crappy season under his belt.
Until then I ain't worried about what kind of contract he gets.

He won’t get a second contract
Great! We've got a psychic here.....who's winning the next 5 super bowls? I want to know that way I don't have to waste any time on football if it isn't the cowboys!

The poster claimed he would not get a second contract. I see no way in which he doesn't get a second contract from someone. He has played 1.5 great seasons in the NFL. Even 2.5 bad ones would not be enough for a team to not take a chance on him when there are only 10-15 guys MAX in the world that can play NFL QB at a high level.
If he plays this upcoming season like the one he just finished he will only find a job as a starter with us, anyone else, I think he would be a backup. Who at this point would he beat out on another team?

That's one of those things that's not even worth thinking about right now, IMO. Lets see how Dak plays these next two seasons.
Exactly
Dak has some improving to do before he gets anything near franchise QB money
Hope it’s something to even worry about in two years

Doesn't matter we are going to suck next yr right guys. We can just draft Clayton Thorton Northwestern in the 2019 draft.

Let him play two more years on the rookie deal. They can always use the tag for leverage to sign him long term if he plays well and it comes to that.
Still has a lot to prove. Let him ride this contract out.

Dak’s next deal matters in Feb 2018 because...?
