I didn't say anything about Dak.
Let's compare careers.
Romo started his career as a backup.
Cousins started his career as a backup.
Cousins was a 4th round pick.
Romo went undrafted.
Cousins didn't start his first full season until he was 27.
Romo didn't start his first full seaosn until he was.....oh yeah 27.
From age 27 to 29.....Romo's QB ratings were 97.4, 91.4 and 97.6.
From age 27 to 29......Kirk Cousins QB Ratings were 101.6, 97.2 and 93.9.
From age 27 to 29......Romo threw for 88 Touchdowns, 12142 passing yards and 42 interceptions.
From ages 27 to 29....Cousins threw for 81 Touchdowns, 11176 passing yards and 36 interceptions.
Romo was 1-2 in the post season at this point.......
Cousins is 0-1.
I'm not saying who the better qb is. I'm backing up my statement that through the age of 29 thus far....Kirk Cousins career rivals Romo's.
OK. I see what you're comparing and that's fair.
What I'm saying is that while we didn't get to see Romo any during his first three seasons with the Cowboys (at least beyond the preseason), Cousins got to play some during the regular season. After showing promise in 1 start and 3 appearances in 2012, he wasn't near as good in 5 appearances and 3 starts (52.3 completion rate, 4 TDs, 7 ints.) the next year ... he looked worse than anything we've seen from Dak. Then the next year in 6 games and 5 starts, he had a 61.8 completion rate, 10 TDs and 9 ints.
So, I agree that his last three seasons have looked like Romo's first three, but the comparison to Dak is that after showing immediate promise as a rookie, his play dipped to the point where it wasn't clear if he was ever going to be more than a backup. Romo never had that kind of season because he wasn't given that chance. He was groomed behind the scenes, so he was a better prepared QB when he took over.
It has been clear since he took over for Bledsoe that Romo was a franchise QB. The same can't be said about Cousins because of his second and third years as a backup, and the same can't be said about Dak because of 2017. Cousins came out of that bad year as a backup followed by a mediocre year as a backup to post those three really good years, and we hope that Dak can do the same following his second year (a mediocre year) as a starter.
That's where I went with the comparisons, so I think we can say there are ways Cousins compares to both. The comparison to Romo could end based on what Cousins does from here, while the comparison to Dak also could based on what Prescott does from here.
As I said, I don't think Cousins will ever be as good as what we saw from Romo in 2014, but I sure hope that Dak can at least be as good was what we've seen from Cousins from 2015-2017.
(Side note: Looking at Romo's and Cousin's numbers from their first three years as starters, it's interesting that their fumbling also is quite similar. Romo had 9, 10 and 13 while Cousins has 9, 9 and 13. Romo was quite a bit better at protecting the ball after that.)
