Sometimes your beat by greater talent and coaching . Sometimes there’s upsets. That’s doesn’t mean your not a good coach or lack talent .

I’d argue both of Garretts loss in the playoffs against the Packers while both winnable games were against better coaching and talent at least at the QB position.

It’s not like we were blown out. A couple of plays in each one were difference much like with Landry in the early years. In that respect there are some comparisons.

The 66,67,68 games we lost to Lombardi were basically one play difference. But to be blunt they should not have been that close. The Green Bay teams were not all that; aging in many areas and Lombardi seemed to have lost his edge in drafting. Much like the boys in the late 80's and late 90's unable to rebuild.
That was why Lombardi quit as coach after his second SB. He knew that team was done which was quickly proven as the Green Bay Packers were to have only one winning season in the next 10 or so.

so what was your excuse for the D sucking then?

Wade. He was the coach for half the season, went 1-7, Garrett took over went 5-3. Paul Pasquloni took over and the D played better. As a fan you should know what happened in 2009 to 2010...lol

Actually only 66 and 67 seasons we lost to Packers. 68 and 69 lost to Browns in 1st round.

While he did step down after 2nd SB as HC, he did remain as GM for another season before going to Washington.

That Packer team still has the most HOF members than any in NFL history with 12 currently .Jerry Kramer fixing to make it 13. The Steelers of the 70’s are 2nd with 9 HOF Inductees.

So in 4 NFL Championships including 2 Super Bowls Landry lost to the 2 most talented teams in NFL history,

The think the most telling stat in 2010 is Wade went 1-5 with Romo starting although Romo went down in that 6th game leading NY.

But no other HC coach had a losing record in a season while Romo was starting.

Yes, by all means, lets compare a coach who inherited a franchise QB and a draft eligible team to a coach who took over a new franchise without the benefit of a draft and had to build it from scratch.

This is so painfully obvious.

Garrett should be fired for that week 17 nonsense to coddle his ego. Great we lost 3 draft slots at a point of the draft where 3 slots is enormous.

But hey as Garrett says how you finish the season matters. Of course he also says what you do from one season has nothing to do with the next.

As Bob Sturm pointed out the difference in value between the 16th and 19th is a low third round, top 100 pick. For a meaningless win, a pathetic win at that. A squandered opportunity to play Rush, and other young players, so he could say we had a winning record. #asinine

Oh bonus, it was also pointed out that that game was the first time they deferred all season. Smh

Sadly by 1967 the packers teams were being over rated as was shown right afterwards. The Browns - interesting team. Up and down; collier was a good coach though. Landry was in the midst of moving from Meredith who had retired to Craig Morton; who just did not have it in playoff games. Meredith towards the end was throwing more interceptions and his relationship with Landry was bad. So those losses I kind of look at as transition losses before Dallas got Roger. Morton also stunk it up in the SB as well.

7.5 years into his career, Garrett still can’t manage the clock. We are a ball control offense for the first 28 minutes of each half and then do our best to conserve time for our opponent after the 2 minute warning. I would have hoped Garrett would learn but he doesn’t see it as a problem to learn from.

I don’t care who you compare Garrett to, I don’t want a coach on the sidelines that makes it more difficult to win and that is what Garrett does.

well that kind of destroys your argument about the D does it not?
You ORIGINALLY SAID he inherited a lousy D- or as you put it NO D AT ALL. SO how could the NO D suddenly perform and then disappear?
Fact is that Red Ball inherited a playoff contending team and did nothing with it the next three years as the roster was churned. Romo was about all we had going for us; well him and Ware who was beginning to wear out. Why can other teams with top QBs keep contending. the only team with a top QB that was not in theplay offs was NO and Brees; and we all know what happened there. Terrible D coordinators and team management screwing up. Sounds kind of familiar does it not? One of the reasons i am not a big fan of Sean Payton. He had a lot of control there and most of the responsibility for the poor D is on him.

Let me ask you something. If you were given a choice to either have the Cowboys participate in the 2018 draft or pick 3 unprotected players from each of the other teams, which would you prefer?
Not the same situation

Let me make sure I've got this straight.

A coaches inability to win playoff game means they are obviously the next Tom Landry?

Sounds legit.
I dont think that is what he said at all. He said up to this point in their careers, they are comparable. The facts say that he is correct.
I see a lot of people here using conjecture to present their arguments, IE: Garrett is a puppet (nobody on this board actually KNOWS what happens behind the doors at the Cowboys offices, yet they still say it as if it is true...). What he said is actually TRUE, at least in terms of actual results, although it doesn't support what you and most others want to hear.

Which was the same results as some of our experienced coaches. Parcells come to mind. Do you know how many coaches around the league get criticized for clock management? All of them....lol

You keep telling yourself that. Parcells inherited a team with QC as the starting QB. He had to find a QB along the way. Garrett inherited Romo in his prime. Whatever makes you guys feel better I guess.

Exactly, expansions teams, in those days, didn't get to draft players from other teams or get the first pick in the draft. They got the players the other teams didn't want and they drafted at the end of the Draft. It was so much tougher for the Cowboys then it is for expansion teams now. To compare Landry and what he did with Garrett and what he has failed to do, thus far, is mind numbing.

You pick one status over a period of Landry's career that is similar to Garrett's and draw the conclusion that they are basically should be treated similarly, laughable.

If you include Jason Garrett's term as interum Head Coach then he has eight seasons under his belt.

Garrett's playoff record is 1-2. Both losses came in the final minute against Green Bay.

Let's take a look at Tom Landry's first eight seasons....

Landry's playoff record was 1-2. Both losses came in the final minute against Green Bay.

If you believe that Jason Garrett should be fired then it would be hypocritical to insist you would have not felt the same about Tom Landry after his first eight seasons.

Tom Landry took the Cowboys to their first Super Bowl in his tenth season as their Head Coach. Over the next ten seasons they went to 4 more Super Bowls and 7 conference championships.

This current team is built. They will see vast improvement in the secondary, they have their pass rushers. They will get a full season from Elliott, Prescott can forget his sophomore season, the offensive line remains elite.

If you remain committed to the firing of Garrett, prepare to accept the consequences of your opinion.

The Cowboys will go the Super Bowl next season and it will become a habit.

I believe you have made an error with your suggesting these two coaches are similar.

Landry created a defense. Not assembled the players, although he did that. He created the 4/3 defense and them morphed it into the Flex. He won a championship with the Giants as a defensive coordinator.

From Wikipedia:

For the 1954 football season, Landry became the defensive coordinator for the Giants, opposite Vince Lombardi, who was the offensive coordinator. Landry led one of the best defensive teams in the league from 1956 to 1959. The two coaches created a fanatical loyalty within the unit they coached that drove the Giants to three appearances in the NFL championship game in four years. The Giants beat the George Halas-led Chicago Bears 47–7 in 1956, but lost to the Baltimore Colts in 1958 and 1959.

However, most of the Dallas fan base wanted him fired after his dismal start. Here is Landry's stats.

http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/players.nsf/ID/03180006

Shramm reupped Landry to the disdain of the Dallas fan base. But he had skins on the wall from his playing and coaching. Plus his innovative ways.

No possible way you equate Garrett in any fashion to Landry, or their situations.

3 draft slots isn't enormous.....let's cut it out. He shouldn't have been fired for trying to win. That's loser talk. You can come up with 100's of other reasons why he should've been fired. You don't take a game. Browns tank every season and it helps them tremendously I suppose. They are a perennial playoff team and championship contender.
