They signed Keith Smith.

That's outside the context of the post I was responding to, but nevertheless, Keith Smith was a free agent, and as such he was free to sign with the Raiders, and the Raiders were free to sign him.

They can still draft a guy...with pick 192. Maybe, they can trade for another player in a trade back to pick 199, they can use that pick on a QB who will become the next Tom Brady.

5th round pick - 6th round pick ... limited odds of success either way.

Oh but I thought we were going to plug a ton of holes with these plethora of draft picks we have. Ergo, we have no reason to even try to add anyone with talent in FA.

We didn't lose a pick - just dropped back one round while at the same time adding a player

They couldn't have drafted a guy they could be sure can play in the NFL in the 5th, and they wouldn't have had the extra 6th rounder. There is value to a proven player over a "keep your fingers crossed" player.
I do not believe there were any true FB coming out in the draft this year.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Flowers(OU), Bawden(SDS)*, and Hill(Mich) were all true fullbacks.

*Invited to Senior bowl as a FB.

What would make this palatable to those who are upset with this pick? What could Dallas have done differently?

Explain the merits of going a different route.

I'll explain why I like what Dallas did:

— The Cowboys acquired a part-time starter without giving up a single pick.

— The Cowboys didn't have to compete for the player in FA, which would have made him more expensive.

— The Cowboys upgraded the fullback spot IMO, getting a player who is more of a threat as a runner and receiver than its previous fullback, without losing anything on special teams.

— The Cowboys, who were going to carry a fullback no matter what, don't have to use a draft pick on one, allowing that pick to be used on another position.

— The lesser cost of this fullback gives Dallas more money to spend on other needs. A half-million might be the difference in a player signing here or elsewhere.

mr gimmie---- sir please do your homework...cowboys traded a 5th for a 6th...and Keith Smith is head and shoulders better than Olawaze...blocks better ....catches passes better....is a specail team ace and in a pinch can play linebacker...cowboys only saved approx.. 400k in money...not worth it...Smith transitioned from linebacker to fullback/special teams...and became one of the best in NFL in 2 years...the dude is a stud

Hey come on now, you make too much sense for the whiners. It hurts their heads and prevents them from whining even more. I would say because they may have to actually think of the positives and the reasons why this move makes sense. But they don't want to. All they want to do is whine about everything regardless.

Now if he was released and signed elsewhere like they want, they would just whine we didn't try to trade for him because we need a FB.
