LOL. They have not. They've basically excused every free agent that signs elsewhere by stating it's no big deal, we build through the draft anyway.

In fact, many of the people criticizing the front office are the ones who have said that there are FA moves out there that don't break the bank but improve the club. Mathieu was one, for example, signing a one year deal for only $7MM. And that there is no excuse for this team not to be more active in FA.

The kicker is you mention overpaying and yet the reality is, this team has actually overpaid the slop they've brought in. That's how you get a bum like Carroll taking up a dead money hit for a couple of million this year. So frankly, if they are going to overpay, I'd rather it be for a mid-level guy who can play than a handful of bums who can't.
Could it be they just didn't see HB as a fit? What you are assuming is that the fans know more than our FO.

I happen to disagree.

mr Star --life is very unfair...i have been locked in this dimension of being a cowboy fan for over 40 years....and i only survive on yester-years memories...i feel that is very unfair

Mr. GORICO, you'll feel better after we sign Cameron Fleming today.

sir his job it to block...i have watched him chip-block rushers and knock em on their butt...saving Dak from getting creamed
which means he is no danger to go out into a pattern. Which means when Zeke or Rod are in the 4receiver formation they are possible targets for ball because guess what they can block and run/catch the ball.

I see why we traded for him. Style points for playing without a helmet.

mr gimmie---- sir please do your homework...cowboys traded a 5th for a 6th...and Keith Smith is head and shoulders better than Olawaze...blocks better ....catches passes better....is a specail team ace and in a pinch can play linebacker...cowboys only saved approx.. 400k in money...not worth it...Smith transitioned from linebacker to fullback/special teams...and became one of the best in NFL in 2 years...the dude is a stud

The fact is, both are sparsely used players, so there isn't enough evidence to claim one is head and shoulders over the other. As for blocking, according to the NFL story on this trade, Olawale is the 2nd rated pass protecting FB in the NFL. Catching passes ... maybe Smith is better, or maybe not. I don't know there is evidence to say either way. As for special teams, obviously Smith was good, but do we really know Olawale isn't, or can't be?

Give us some examples why Smith is better. I think it has already been shown why Olawaze is better.
mr Jazz--- when i think of fullback his number one priority is to dig out linebackers and chip-block pass rushers...and Smith is a stud in both..i watched him sneakily chip-block a pass rusher who did not see him and knock him on his butt...the dude is smart and has only been learning the postion for 2 years...he is fiercly mean too when he is on the field...just what i want from my full-back...plus he can catch good too and run the ball...remember he used to be a linebacker so what he has learned and accomplished in 2 years is amazing...his arrow is way more up than Olawale

mr gimmie---- the number one thing you want from a full-back is to block...and Smith is so much better than Olawale...are you kidding me mr gimmie?

If we want a fullback only to run block, then yes, Keith Smith is better than Olawale. If we want one who is a good run blocker but also a receiving threat and a running threat, then Olawale is easily better.

Olawale was a 2017 Pro Bowl alternate because of those all-around skills.

Smith played his college at San Jose State. At worst this is lateral move. Different type of fullbacks. Bisaccia probably got in Gruden's ear and made a pitch for Smith. Olawale sure seems like the better overall offensive player. I'm curious as to why you're going to such extremes to overanalyze this trade?

I wouldn't consider it extremes, just the most important thing happening with this team right now. As sad as that may be.

For a guy that "seems like the better offensive player", he played less than Smith did. On offense and special teams.

I question this live from several angles.

Giving up draft equity for the guy another team took yours to replace

A guy who certainly would have been cut. Few teams keep one fullback, much less two.

Trading for an older player.

Giving up equity for a position that played 12% of offensive snaps for you.

And paying the fifth most in the league for a fullback this staff rarely uses anyway.

mr OmerV---sir have you done your homework?...Keith Smith was head and shoulders better than Olawaze...we traded and lost a round and got a inferior player...just dumb business sense

First, this is outside the context of my post and the post I was responding to, which was only about whether we could have drafted a FB in the 5th round instead of trading for one. Accordingly, your response doesn't make much sense.

Second, what exactly is your homework based on? Special teams tackles is the only statistical evidence I'm aware of that may favor Smith. There aren't really much in the way of other stats to base a decision that either is head and shoulders above the other.

Even so, Smith was a free agent and free to sign with who he pleased, and he was already gone when this deal was made. Accordingly, he wasn't part of this deal.

I know nothing about him, is he truly an upgrade over Smith?
This is the guy who got replaced by Smith at the Raiders.

The Raiders signed Smith to replace this dude, so who do you think is better?

Pretty obvious who Gruden thinks is better.

Not necessarily. Like many have stated here.....Bissacia is new to Oakland and Keith Smith plays special teams and did well for him. He may be more of a fit for what he wants on special teams as opposed to Olawale who's a better offensive weapon.
