But many can- so how can it be a disease when a person can simply walk away from it. Show me where they can medically prove its a disease and those that can walk away from it don't have it.

But then you sound like an enabler anyway
Many people can live their entire lives healthy and not get diseases such as cancer, doesn't mean they aren't susceptible to them. All it means is they are lucky enough not to get them. Addiction which is something I have dealt with personally is most definitely a disease. If you can walk away from a drug it simply means you don't have an addictive personality. Unfortunately it is not that way for many people including myself. They have prescription drugs to help people with addiction to take away withdrawal symptoms. Tell me, if it isn't a disease why would they make addiction curbing medication when people can simply walk away from it? Have you ever seen a heroin addict up close and personal coming off of it? Why don't you watch that person defecating and throwing up all over the place without the drug in their system and come back here and have an actual discussion regarding addiction. Until then you seem like a very ignorant person.

what a group of unforgiving, judgmental posters. give the guy some slack. nominees to the supreme court have admitted to smoking weed in the past. bush jr. admitted to doing drugs.

And that player he would be pushing off the roster would be some UDFA or some FA they signed right before TC. Not a draft pick from this year, unless that draft pick in all likely hood was a 7th round PS player at best anyway.

You seem to have this thinking that all 53 players are top of the mill NFL caliber type players. When in fact the bottom 3, all east on every team would be replaced with a player with 1st round potential such as Gregory.

And the team trusts has nothing to do with it. They would take that risk. Because if he does not work out, there are hundreds of players to take his spot that would be inactive each week, and on the bubble himself to be replaced at any moment.

And yes, he is worth that risk.
They knew the risk when they drafted himself. I don’t think they realized how much of a nightmare it would be. But it was a risk. Every player entering the NFL via the combine is tested before the combine and they all know it. How many has failed that drug test? Well this year 2 more have failed.

Two highly regarded college defensive prospects will enter this week’s NFL draft with red flags.

Multiple sources told FOXSports.com that Georgia outside linebacker/defensive end Justin Houston and Iowa defensive lineman Christian Ballard failed drug tests at the NFL Scouting Combine in February. Both players tested positive for marijuana, the sources said.

Houston, an early entry junior, is projected in some mock drafts as a late first-round draft choice. The 6-foot-3, 270-pound Houston had 67 tackles and 10 sacks last season for the Bulldogs as a rush linebacker.

Houston’s athleticism and pass-rush skills make him especially appealing as an outside linebacker for NFL teams that use a 3-4 defensive scheme.

The 6-foot-4, 283-pound Ballard was projected by some draft analysts to get selected as early as the second round. Ballard played at both end and tackle in 13 starts for the Hawkeyes last season, tallying 43 tackles and three sacks. Ballard notched at least 40 tackles in each of his past three seasons at Iowa. Ballard’s wing span and athleticism have made him an intriguing draft prospect.

Houston and Ballard have clean police records and no known history of marijuana use.

The agents for Houston and Ballard didn’t return telephone calls or emails seeking comment.

The NFL draft will take place Thursday through Saturday in New York City.

Well we won't count on him but if he wins a job in camp, let's roll with him and see what we can get out of that 2nd rd pick.

Would love to see the NFL do away with that rule but, for now, that rule will keep Randy straight.

Ok so on average, how many sacks does a good DE (take your pick, preferably a high 2nd rounder or low 1st rounder) get in 310 snaps?

Well that hard to look up since just about anyone who has ever been drafted in those rounds have played more than Randy Gregory.

Last Year Taco Charlton (who was a rookie) and who everyone was calling a Bust, got

16 games 399 snaps got - 3 sacks, 15 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 1pass defended, 10 hurries in about 24 snaps a game.

Randy in 14 games and 310 snaps got - 1 sack, 15 tackles, 0 forced fumbles, 0 passes defended, 7 hurries in about 22 snaps a game.

Figuring we may try for another gamble this year. A couple of top prospect LB failed the drug test at the center combine.

Addiction is self inflicted. Show me one addict that woke up one day and caught themselves a bad case of addiction.

Every single year the team cuts players at the end that we have thread after thread about saying they will never make it to the practice squad. The team has 10 draft picks. I don’t expect them to draft 10 players but I bet they draft at least 8 and not all are going to make the team so yes I do believe it will come down to Gregory or a draft pick for him to make the team. My hope is that he is lights out and it’s a no brainer. If he is just okay, I have a feeling the draft pick may get the nod if he is a comparable player.

definitely not impressive, nor encouraging, but he was playing on a high ankle sprain for about 10 of those games. That's a notoriously bad injury to play on. I've got hope, super uphill battle though.

I do get where you are coming from and I am big on personal responsibility but I also think it is widely accepted that there are mental aspects and personality traits that make some people more susceptible than others to becoming addicted. Having said that, I think it is up to the individual to recognize their situation, to want help, and to seek it. If an individual is not doing that, then their situation is totally on them.

Your post is incredibly dumb.

Just because it’s “self inflicted” doesn’t mean it’s not a disease. There are many diseases that can also be caused by a persons decisions and lifestyle.

A cigarette smoker gets lung cancer, is lung cancer not a disease?

Somebody who likes candy and donuts gets diabetes. Is diabetes not a disease?

Somebody who works all day in the sun for years, gets skin cancer. Is skin cancer not a disease?

Somebody who eats too many cheeseburgers and too much bacon, gets heart disease. Is heart disease not a disease?

Somebody who worked in a building with asbestos gets cancer. Is that cancer not a disease?

Coal miners who got black lung. Was black lung not a disease?

How many more examples do you need, to show that the entire premise of your post is ill informed and quite frankly, ignorant.

Now the person who gets these diseases have personal responsibility in making sure it’s treated. If you get diabetes you need to eat better and possibly take your medication, check blood sugar, etc.

If you get heart disease you need to eat better, get more exercise, take your medication for cholesterol or high blood pressure, etc.

But this notion that something isn’t a disease because personal choices helped to cause it? Foolishness.

I agree with you. Smoking, drinking and doing drugs are voluntary actions. It is a choice that is made. I hope Gregory chooses to stop, but so far he has chose weed over football.

Fair enough.

Although neither are very impressive initially, they are actually very close production wise even with TC playing +2 games and getting +89 snaps.

A case can be made that RG more or less produced equivalent results just by looking and what we are talking about. Initially it was sacks but I do appreciate you adding the hurries, passes defended etc...

Someone mentioned RG’s injury, which is something I didn’t get consider but i don’t think it matters in what we are talking about.

Addiction isnt a disease. I'm calling out your nonsense on this every single time.
Its a shame that you have this thought process. When most MD's and Psychologists disagree with you. I mostly respect your posts and enjoy them, but as someone who is a recovering addict, you just lost a ton of respect in my books. This is blatantly ignorant and upsetting. As I said to an above poster. Go watch someone getting off of heroin. Watch them urinate and defecate all over themselves throwing up and tell me its not a disease. Many people are born with a predisposition to doing drugs and while they do have the choice to make of course, many have urges they cant figure out. Tell me that a pregnant mother doing drugs who passes her choice on to her unborn baby has given her child a "choice". I have been clean for more than 3 years and you have NO idea how hard it was for me to get there. How dare you sit there and comment from your high horse when you have no clue what the hell you are talking about. Shame on you

I have a few friends who are in deep with the Nebraska football program so take this with a grain of salt but I've heard that he's been working his tale off and is in the best shape of his life. Both mentally and physically. And for the peeps that think RG 'was' just a pot head who was doing it for recreational purposes, he has a 'disease' and this was the only thing that made him feel somewhat 'normal'. Since the ban, he found a doc who has fixed his medication and he is finally on the right path. Some assume people smoke pot just because but there are people out there who actually use it to balance their brain activity and stop whatever negative thoughts are running through their heads. I'm pulling for this kid as should all Cowboy fans.
