I’m not arguing his HoF status but at some point there has to be a changing of the guard. Witten just isn’t elite anymore and hasn’t been for awhile.

Top 15? Let’s not set the bar too high.
Most teams don't have a good tight end. It's always been that way.

By comparison, Witten is far better than most. Not elite anymore, but better than what other teams are throwing out there.

Especially today. Almost NONE of them block anymore.

Witten is not a good blocker anymore either.

As for the college to NFL blocking that falls on coaching. It’s not like the guys in college are incapable of doing it. That’s what NFL coaches get paid to do.

He is WAY better than most tight ends. Just not what he was.

Jimmy Graham hasn't blocked anybody yet.

He will. In time. Just not now.

And sorry, but even if his skills have diminished he still is the best we have. Sure, his reps should be cut down and the other guys should get a chance, but the time hasn't come for Witt just yet. Thing is...look at how everyone is focused on him...they are hanging on and listening to every word. It is obvious that man still has respect in that room.

I agree however he doesnt have the ability to take it down the middle anymore..His vet smarts still make him a valuable player in this league, but its time to get Swaim and Rico involved, even that guy they protected last year..I realized Garret and Linehan are reticent to expose rookies on the blocking side, but ive seen enough from Swaim and maybe Rico to start attacking the middle of the field with the tightends..The help it would give to Dak, and the running game can not be said enough..

fasano was a good player and had a good feel with Tony Romo. He was part of that group of guys that was close also. He has played in 180 games and caught 36 touchdowns. he should have been here a long time. Garrett shipping him off for nothing without ever having given a clear answer is still ridiculous to me. He was the perfect compliment. He would have only got better here.

Garrett screwed that up. Bennett was not only not a better player but he was a problem in the locker room and spoke out against the quarterback and witten publicly. Everything about dumping fasano all these years later still stinks.
That still sticks in my craw. Fasano played 10 years in the league *after* the Garrett Bros claimed he couldn't play and had to be traded.

Bothers me too. I never thought Fasano was going to be a great one, but he didn't have to be to have an impact in a 2 TE set. If he had just caught 30 passes a year that would have been a nice boost to the offense, and another weapon the defense couldn't ignore. Obviously with the benefit of hindsight we know he was easily able to do that, but the point is the Cowboys didn't seem to even make the effort to find out.

Still, with Witten still in top form at the time, that situation would have been forgotten if it hadn't repeated itself 2 other times, with Bennett and Escobar. When they used 2nd round picks on Fasano and Witten, I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they would find a way to use them enough to justify that high a pick, but they didn't, and by ther time Escobar came around, I didn't expect much.

Look around the league. There are VERY few tight ends worth a crap.

Witten is still top 15. Easily. People think tight ends are just lying around everywhere. They're rare commodities, especially guys that can block and catch. Lots of blockers, lots of catchers, but very few that can do both.
Explain what he's done over his career to help this team get to the Super Bowl with great QBing, HOF receiver? Time to move on buddy.

It's all romo's fault. The Romo fumbled the snap play against seattle in 2006, fasano never even tried to block his guy to begin with thinking whatever its a 20 yard field goal. Fasano's guy ended up making the tackle on romo. I'm sure the coaching staff wasn't pleased with the effort. Man only if Romo held on to the ball at least we know Parcell's probably would have stayed and so would Fasano.

reminds me of my dad
workaholic and honest but old fashioned makes advice sound like lecture

comeon guys we can do it if we pull together, you see hard work pay off - Witten
they know me they fear me come with me and they will fear you too - Ray Lewis

Witten is great but not at inspirational speeches

To your point, Ray Lewis won championships, Witten hasn't won anything.

And with historically the worst defenses in Cowboys history, including one that was the worst in NFL history.

It's hard to win a Super Bowl when you keep losing 38-35.

Wait I thought it was Dak's fault we didn't make the playoffs last year?

Witten biggest day this year was when getting blown out by the Broncos and the latter was just ceding the underneath middle.

The point is, he’s a leader to his fanboys while Romo supposedly doesn’t care and isn’t a leader because he went to Cabo..
I haven't seen too many Witten fanboys that were Romo haters. As a matter of fact, I can't recall one from the last board. Are there a bunch of Witten fans on this board that hated Romo?
