Love the post excellent. My biggest question is his neck condition and is Jaylon Smith fast enough to play OLB...?

FIRST allegedly they checked his neck again today..All is well.
SMITH RAN A 4-5 LAST YEAR..He was complaining about getting the rest of his 4-4 speed back ..Further Smith had sacks and pressure blitzing last year.

Furthermore, I'd like to point out that he wasn't even my first 2 choices in this draft (of the players that we legitimately had a chance at). James and Landry were 2 players that I really liked the thought of us getting. With that being said, LVE is someone that I do like as well. I'd have been happy with Evans, but I think I understand why we didn't get him. I explained this previously on another thread, but he didn't run at both the Combine and at his Pro Day which would undoubtedly put off a lot of teams.

I dont think we have drafted a Alabama player since Garrett got here.

If Miller blows up in the league I’m going to be upset with myself for not whining more on the forum for us to draft him.

He just screams Antonio Brown part 2.
Some of us see it. But then again, I am very wrong more times than right. I like VDE, I like Miller. I have absolutely fallen in love with turds before. Not this time. Both will be players.

Hmm, at least not high, I believe that you're right. However, I think that there's a more underlying reason for us to not get Evans, as I explained. Thus, LVE was the natural choice, especially when James went off the board.

You accused me of hiding. I call BS. I was talking about my 15 years between this board and the other we both were on. Not sure what you are referring to on other boards.

Calling Vander Esch another Carpenter is weak and the easy way out. Might as well just say you don't like him because he has a funny name.

I'm saying there is a trail back to other boards that preceded this one. I was a member of them. I also am pretty straight forward of owning my mis-judgments about football. I do not recall once you ever coming back and clearing the air about your position when you have been wrong.

My opinion is this kid has one year on tape, He is not this Erlacher type player laying the wood. He has a little speed, but the highlights I have seen about him is his defense against run games isn't stellar. He seems like a big galoot and will be exposed as a lot less than the giddiness this board seems to be reveling in.

I think he will be Bobby Carpenter. Which is what I said. You chose to ridicule me about that opinion. Which has a link to a past which is long gone.

Bobby Carpenter? Shut up. Please shut up. Long history on boards buys you nothing. I was there at the start.

I’m not a doctor. But I believe a stinger is just a pinched nerve.

Usually nothing long term. Remember Demarcus Ware and he came back the next week for the game winning sack against New Orleans?

Yes, it's a nerve injury, my high school coach called em " burners " from the burning sensation I guess.

You are prepared to be surprised, in a good way. I've posted this before, but appropriate again. I live in Boise. Went to BSU home games. Went in person to LVE's pro day... Being as objective as I can be, this guy is, at a minimum, Karlos Dansby. At a maximum, Brian Urhlacher... Simply put, 6'4" 256 lb guys do NOT move like this guy does. He is the best coverage MLB in this draft. His backpedal is effortless and fluid. He opens his hips like a CB. And with his 6'4" height and wingspan, 39.5" vert, and great range, he closes that window in the middle of the field. Makes it so hard for QB's to fit passes into that middle seam or throw over him. In today's NFL, that is huge... Further, I believe it was proven last year that Jaylon Smith is a far better OLB, than he is a MLB. Let him come off the edge and cover TE's. LVE's instincts at MLB are so much better than Jaylon's. Plus, he weighs 256 and has room for another 10lbs without losing any quickness... Where LVE needs to improve is take on. But not because he's not physical (forget the Bobby Carpenter comparisons, they are wrong and lazy). He IS physical. But he is so athletic, he often tries (and succeeds) to slip around blockers. He will get coached up on that... Also, the draft is a projection. And LVE's athleticism is off the charts. At 256, he ran a 4.65 40. And add to that a 3 cone of 6.88. That is the SAME as Calvin Ridley and better than DJ Moore (6.95). Last, he had a vertical of 39.5". That is the SAME as DJ Moore and 8.5" higher than Ridley. For a MLB. Think about that and let it sink in. He is an athletic freak, and an ascending player... Finally, he is a really good kid. High school championships in 8 man football and basketball. He is a self made player. Walk on. Team captain. He will not stop working. He is the anti-Dez... Fellas, do not be disappointed. You will love this guy.

Awesome post!!! I too live in Boise and am a BSU fan. I can also contest to this! I watched him play and he was an outstanding player. I'm very happy with the pick!!

I feel like some people have a problem with it because his name isn't associated with a "big school" name (and they actually don't know anything about him as a player). If he came from Alabama some people would be throwing a party about the selection. Schools outside the powerhouse conferences find talent too. Anyways, nice post!

Bring on Round 2!

ABOUT the best you should hope for is maybe him getting inserted for Wilson..He wont start..Smith is your mlb. On third down..Smith is faster than LVE IS NOW..This pick was JJs idea of making a splash..Not Bpa, depth or anything..I hope we find a way to use him where he is not exposed quickly!
Last year Jaylon did not have the lateral movement he needed to be successful. Hopefully that improves this year. LVE will start next season!!!

Leighton Vander esch has neck / spine issues.
On the Stick to Football podcast, Bleacher Report's Matt Miller reported that five teams have taken Boise State LB Leighton Vander Esch off their draft boards because of a "neck" and/or "spine" issue.

Miller explains: "It's a spine problem where they feel like it's narrowing. And for some teams that's just too much of a problem. It's too scary for them, they're not going to take that risk." Miller was unequivocal in his report. This dispatch mirrors news first reported by Walter Football's Charlie Campbell a little over a week ago. Rotoworld's Thor Nystrom reported that Vander Esch's medical report included a concussion, a c-spine nerve injury and a minor knee injury. The concussion and pinched nerve occurred on the same play in 2016, injuries that ended his season prematurely. Whether the "narrowing" that Miller vaguely alludes to has anything to do with that injury or not is not yet known. Expect for this to be a storyline all day Thursday. Vander Esch has been considered a consensus Round 1 prospect throughout the process. We'll find out on Thursday night whether this news effects that status.
***************

Everyone had best pray that old college neck injury (and spinal cord narrowing) doesn't come back to haunt LVE and the Cowboys.

He was a much better player at his position. That point still stands. Are you saying you think Esch is better than Urlacher?

Urlacher played a position in a scheme at New Mexico that doesn't exist in the pro game.

Vander Esch is a better LB right now then Urlacher was when drafted, yes. Undoubtedly.

They both won Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year though.

Lee, VDE, Smith left to right could be very good. Smith is a smart blitzer. Our revamped secondary sure could use a player like ET. A proven player with swagger. Help out the new guys. Trade our 3rd.

Very mixed reviews. Obviously Dallas needs either he or Jaylon, if,not both, to be studs.

Hoping for the best.

Derwin was right there. And he’s gonna be damn good. I wouldn’t be wondering IF James will be good.

i was shocked James and Edmomd fell..We had the opportunity, and we sat there..Lve was the target the whole time..Predicted..I hope Not presumptuous of a talaented but inexperienced FBS linebacker

Just because our personal picks is not what we wanted or not.....doesn't automatically make this a bad pick.
It's one thing to get a concussion and a season ending neck stinger. It's a whole different animal when your spinal cord ends up having some narrowing due to the impact. Cowboys had best pray that "narrowing" doesn't come back to haunt them. HUGE RISK ESPECIALLY WITH THE #19TH PICK.
