It all started back when Onk hit Lahl over the head with a stick and made her swoon. Aygor heard that and thought if he could duplicate that sound, maybe he could get a girl like Lahl too.

Ever since, people have been trying to recreate and improve on the sounds they dig. Some are successful, some should have left it alone.

So, what are your favorite cover songs, and which ones were better the first time?

1) Smokin' in the Boys Room - I think Motley Crue did okay, but I much prefer the soul of the original Brownsville Station.

2) Come Together - It's hard to compare to the Beatles, but I think I personally give Aerosmith the nod on this one.

What you got?

Metallica and Van Halen covers are the best IMO.

Sometimes they are just as good and many times better.

This 100%. Both are fantastic. There aren't many bands who can cover another band's hit songs and do them better. Both of these bands have done it with regularity.

•Hound Dog...Elvis' iconic anthem was first recorded by Big Mama Thornton.

•Guitar Man...Jerry Reed recorded and wrote this'n...but Elvis made it his own...in fact on Elvis' version...thats Jerry Reed on guitar.

•I Just Can't Help Believin'....HUGE hit for B.J. Thomas.....and a staple of Elvis' vegas performances in August of 1970....this was right in Elvis' wheel house...tailor-made for his voice...GREAT song...Elvis rocked it.

Vegas odds of how many posts would be made before Elvis made his entrance would have been = O/U 6 posts.

Unfortunately, I would have hoped that the OVER would have been the case and therefore would have been my wager. This is why my Dad always told me not to gamble!!! :lmao2:

My Favorite Things...most know it from the sound of music but I prefer John Coltrane's version.

Dead Flowers by The Stones and covered by Townes Van Zandt.

This is a very interesting one. I originally assumed the song was written by Townes and covered by the Stones since Townes is known primarily as a songwriter, and not at all known for doing covers of songs written by others, but it was actually the other way around.

I like both versions, but I like Townes better because it comes across as more personal - as if the singer is an individual expressing his individual thoughts. Townes is pretty marginal as a singer though.

Foo Fighter's cover version of Baker Street is one of my favorites also.
I like it better than the original personally.

This is one hell of a cover by my favorite country artist.

The difference is you can actually understand the lyrics. Love me some Stevie but I wouldn't have wanted to make love to her, wouldn't have known who's name she was yelling.

I knew Waylon had done Gold Dust Woman, but I had no idea about Rhiannon. Very odd

A couple that jumped out at me where the covers were the most successful versions ...

The Night they Drove Old Dixie Down. Written by Robbie Robertson of The Band, and originally recorded by The Band, but Joan Baez had the more commercially successful version. Both are very good.

I Will Always Love You. Written and originally recorded by Dolly Parton, but Whitney Houston had a monster hit with it.

@BrAinPaiNt Have you ever seen this one? It's pretty damn good. It's even before Cowboys from Hell was released and Kerry is on stage with them.

Interesting fact. Kerry was wearing wigs before he finally just shaved his head.

Technically a lot of songs are covers, but I think the spirit of this thread is a song that was well known by the original artist and then covered by someone else.
That's true, but then we get into the debate of "What qualifies as a catch?"....... I mean, "What qualifies as well known?"
