LVE is not going to become better than Hitchens here in a few weeks.

I was not against drafting LVE but the reason we had to was our own doing. We created a hole and then filled it with a 1st round pick. Hitchens is not making tons of money. Especially not with a cap that keeps rising. At some point, you have to pay players what they are worth. The concept of going cheap on defense has not worked for us.
I like Hitchens. I was vocal about signing him. I am also fine with the younger replacement.

The odds are in your favor regarding your assessment of LVE vs Hitchens. But when you make a blanket statement that "Our LB core is now weaker than last season" you're talking about the entire group. Is it reach to think Jaylon Smith will be better than last year? What about Joe Thomas' contributions? What if the Cowboys get lucky and Sean Lee plays all 16 games instead of just 11? There are several factors that have yet to be determined before anyone can make an intelligent assessment of this year's group compared to last.

The salary cap puts pressure on every team to make tough decisions on good players. You could use your argument to denigrate the front office in the same way when talking about Ronald Leary. Collins wasn't as good as a rookie as Leary, but the team had to make a decision about how to allocate a limited salary pool moving forward. I would hope the front office is smart enough to be looking at projected performance at least two or three years down the line. If you pay guys like Hitchens and Leary the money it would take to keep them, would you have enough left over to re-sign Martin? After Martin, will you have enough to sign Lawrence or Prescott or Elliot? Which position(s) is/are most important to the success of the club? There are a lot of moving parts to take into consideration.

Not just 1st round picks. I want 2 picks in the top 15.

I want the winning lottery ticket.

There's no guarantee they would both be top 15... but I'd take that chance if it was a serious offer.

Paying Hitchens $9M per year is overpaying. He isn't worth that.

Going cheap on defense has not worked for us? I'd like some examples please of who you are refering to.

Let’s trade him. We aren’t looking to get better and love cheap contracts. Let’s get some draft picks and hope one of them develops in a few years.

They were unwilling to sign Lawrence to a long term contract for reasons.

And we actually have more DEs we like than we can get on the field.

Trades are value for value. We should certainly entertain their offer.

The pick is past, we have Taco ... it’s done. If you are talking about giving up our 2019 first round pick, we don’t know now where that will bi in the first round. In any case, I’m sure a lot of teams would give up a future 1st round pick for Mack or Donald, yet it hasn’t happened. Likely there is a reason.
i'd call it a stalemate for the moment

I would trade Dlaw to the Jets for 2 first round picks all day, every day.

That would work out great because those 2 picks along with our top 5 pick. That is were we would be picking at with no pass rush. Hell even Billy Kilmer could come out of retirement, would pick us apart with all the time he would have.

The Patriots have stayed good because they have Tom Brady behind center and Billy B. pacing the sideline.

I’m thinking without them the way they churn their roster wouldn’t work quite so well.

As for Lawrence he needs to be re-signed if he performs like he did last year. You keep your homegrown star players.

Yep and Bellicheck for sure. But they still need to keep the team around Brady of quality.

If I knew we get a top 5 pick next season then that would convince me even more to do it. Probably get rid of Garrett all in the same offseason. Perfect offseason.

LLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOLLLLLLLL

Take the 18 million we saved on Lawrence and go out and sign two defensive studs. Take the top 5 pick and take a DE. Take the Jets top 15 first rounder and take a DT. Garrett gets fired and we get a real head coach. We might be competing for a SB next season. And we still have the two picks in the first round after next season. :yourock:

If I was going to trad anyone I would try to trade Tapper. He is going to have a hard time making the team anyway. Of course your not going to get any high picks but you will get something in return. No way I trade DLaw even for 2 #1's Getting them doesnt guarantee that we can get Mack. We have something special here this year on DL no need to mess up the chemistry this year. Now if they wanted to give me two #1's and a #2 in 2019 draft I would consider that. I dont think the Jets are that stupid so its a mute point. Wishful thinking though. Tapper is probably more plausible for a later round pick.

No one thought the Vikings would be so stupid either. Lets not forgot some of our trades over the years either.

Maybe.

Or maybe Taco, Gregory, Armstrong and, dare I say, Tapper might be better than you think. Particularly Taco, who I think is getting completely disrespected by this fan base.

I'd take 2 first round picks for any player on this roster other than the 3 studs on the offensive line.

You won't get anything for Tapper. If he won't make the team, why would someone trade for him?
