@John813, this is so dead on, man:

(from yourself/and to get the thread up and moving)

"I mean, Patches got a better return. A 29 year old winger off a bad year.
EK is a top 3 D-man in his prime.

They need to strip that franchise away from Melynk asap.

I understand why they sold low on Hoffman, but they traded a 30 goal winger and a top D-man for crap.
No bluechipers or high picks. And still kept Bobby broken Ryan

Last edit, their stadium may be a ghost town. Rightfully so."

I don't think the MaxPac trade was a better return. The Sens got 3 roster players and 1, maybe 2, first-round picks. Plus, Balcers will probably be in the NHL this season and Norris was a first-round pick with a lot of upside. That's almost double the Suzuki, Tatar, 2nd-round package that the Habs got, and rightfully so.

I guess I just see Suzuki with a higher floor and a better chance of reaching it than those guys respectively.

Think Norris is a fine prospect.

My bet is Tatar will get a lot of top line/top 6 ice time and they will try to improve his stock and then flip him at some point resulting in more picks.

Patches got a better return in terms of talent between him and EK. He's 29 and had an off year. 30 goal scorer but not really an elite winger.

EK is a top 3 defenseman, and depending on who you ask may be #1, #2 or #3. And it's not like he's 34 years old and about to decline. He's 28 and can easily play another 4-5 years at a high level, especially since he doesn't rely on a physical element to be the defenseman he is.

I thought Ottawa got some solid prospects/players, but no one that can be a game changer.
I expected more of a return but I guess Dorion was tied up by EM being a cheapass.

Who's your team, Future?

I think the Habs did very well getting Suzuki back. Everyone thought they were down to getting a second, from their original aspersions of a Gabe Vilardi-type return.

Patches isn't EK. As John said, Patches is lesser of a player and returned a premium prospect, when everyone was saying that Patches burned his org (or vice-versa) and had destroyed his trade value. EK should have landed more. There wasn't a piece that Ottawa landed as nice as Suzuki. Not close. Habs did really well, all things considered.

A Tarasenko he is not. And like you said, his off year is concerning. He's probably looking for 8x8, nasty. Kings offered 6x6, thank God we avoided that. I'll take Kovy for free (no assets lost), at half the term allllll day.

Habs did incredibly well there. Surprised in Bergevin, for a change, John.

I thought the deal given to him by LVK was a good deal for them as well. 4 years. Eats up what should be the last of his very good years and he's an UFA by ~34. Salary is fair too if he does reach the 30 goal mark again, and often. 4x7. Go figure GMGM hasn't screwed up yet.

But yea, anything over 4 years would of been a tougher pill to swallow.

Way I see it, wingers are worth less compared to centers, defensemen and goalies of equal talent.
Goalies can steal games, defensemen can play up to almost half the game, and centers are more well known to be two way players.
Be curious to see how Columbus plays their hand on Artemi Panarin who doesn't want to live in Columbus long term. tough break.

John, if you could have any defenseman in the NHL on your Panthers, who you got? I imagine your top three are EK, DD, VH? Do you trust EK's ankle enough to take him over Doughty or Hedman? (Not contract, just talent/Hedman is on a ridiculous contract, I'm talking pure ability)

At this point, Hedman or Doughty. I admit I do watch Hedman more than Drew, but I know he's a stud.
The ankle injury is concerning, but his vision is still top notch and he still probably can still pot 15+ goals.
If fully healthy, man, tough one. Actually, I would be delighted to take the "3rd" best guy out of the bunch lol.
Sucker for those tall defensemen who can actually skate/play.

Aw snaps, he did sign for 4x7, didn't he!? I've been up since 2 am, so that's my excuse :) ... see where the start of the NFL/Dallas season impairs the tail end of offseason hockey :)

It's a great deal for Vegas. Bet Max wishes he took that 6x6 from the Kings. Unless he's banking on himself aging like Thornton/Jagr, and getting a third contract (highly, highly unlikely)

There's only about 3 defenseman who can play half a game and be effective for 30 full minutes (EK isn't one, and never has been), my brother. Wingers are absolutely less than C. Barkov, I am such a fan. He is a future top-5 C. I just adore him. He's already a Selke-candidate heading into 2018-19.

Yea, not sure when it was handed to him, but saw the extension on the trade forum prior to the EK ****-show lol.
Yea, losing 8mil in taxes prior to taxes. Quite the risk for him to bet on himself at 34 to get another decent contract.

And yea, 30 mins is stretching it. Meant to put 20-25 mins without OT.

What? Erik Karlsson is absolutely one of those guys. Who are the 3 you think are?

B/c if you think EK isn't effective for 30 minutes, then it can't be Hedman, and outside of those two and DD, I don't know who I'd even consider in that group.

Hedman, Josi, Weber, Doughty. Maybe Ghost. EK is not a 30 minute D. He is superstar offensive-specialist who desolves when he is tasked to do too much on D. And should never be above 24 or so mins. Same with Subban. 24 mins and you have elite play, over that, and they make mistakes.

You being a Rangers fan, McDonagh was this once upon a time.
You're badly underrating Erik Karlsson and Ghost is basically a poor man's version of him. Erik Karlsson does what Brent Burns does without having the benefit of having Vlasic/Braun play the tough defensive minutes against opposing players. The only defensemen who don't make mistakes are the ones who also don't make any plays.

McD was never in the top class of defensemen. His playoff run in 2014 was Norris calibre, but he never approached that level of play since.

Ghost may have been a bit a stretch, I'll give you that. Karlsson doing what Burns does is my point. Both are subpar, non elite on the backend. Both make their living from offensive play and get dominated in corsi, board battles, walls. They are snipers and playmakers. Premium, blueline snipers and playmakers. They don't belong in the same breath of the Doughty's, Suter's, Weber's, Hedman's. But everyone: WHOA POINTS. It's a slap in the face to compare them to the aforementioned. It's like comparing Kopitar to MacKinnon

As a Rangers fan, I'm disappointed to see you post that about McDonagh. That's crazy, bro. He was world class at one point. Apparently you like points and shiny lights from your D. That's why you guys never win.
