Its funny to watch a car pass you on the road with what appears to be large amount of smoke flowing out of the window.

Make no mistake - I'm a daily and nobody would ever know, walking into my house. Why? This thing right up here.
Cigs? Well they keep burning so it wouldn't work so great, but a glass pipe, that you can close?
I love to smoke at night, or take a single before getting down to work, but I hate the smell. My wife does even more.
This thing solves that problem.

That’s pretty nifty...I was looking at the link. Keeps the peace...not bad.

My dads boss quit when the price jumped for 25 cents to 30 cents a pack at the VA commissary.

Reminds me of...

http://www.jsbcycle.com/movie/smoke.mp4
Told myself I'll never pay more than a dollar a pack, OK no way in hell I'm paying $2.00 a pack, that's just crazy. $2.50?, hah not this guy. $3.00? are you ******** me? $3.25? I believe that's what they were when I quit about 13-14 years ago. I used the patch and it worked great but I was ready to quit and when I did quit I couldn't believe just how much people that smoke stink. I never smoked in the house, restaurants, didn't like the smell around food even when I smoked. Today, all these years later when I smell cigarette smoke it just shuts my lungs down, can't breathe around it. Smoking cigarettes is a disgusting habit, yes I know that makes me a hypocrite.

I smoked for around 17 years. I quit on Oct 5th 2000. (yep, I started very young!)

Anyhow. Here is the story and it's multifaceted.

In 1985 just before the World Series (Royal and George Brett) I moved to New Orleans with my dad. (he got stationed in Belle Chase) I was maybe 12 or 13 and already smoking. Anyhow, this part has nothing to do with smoking, but something that happen here actually helped me quit smoking years later.

While down there. I was a drinker! The problem was. I was the youngest of them all. There were a group of kids on the base that drank too, but as I said I was the youngest. Anyhow. There was this guy who had joined the Army at 18, but immediately got discharged for being...well. hah Not a good soldier. Anyhow, he still had possession of his military ID and if you had a Military ID, you could buy alcohol at 18 years old. (at least in Louisiana) Anyhow, he used to buy all the kids beer or some type of alcohol (he was discharged for being a terrible soldier as I said haha)

Anyhow, one Friday night. Everyone got their beer, but me being the youngest and no cash. I didn't get anything. This chic that was several years older than me (and extremely hot to a 12 year old haha) decided to help a brother out and gave me a bottle of spearmint schnapps she had tucked away.

Anyhow, I was chugging that bottle and it did a number on me. Oh man that didn't go well. I got so sick that I puked my guts out as most drinkers have a time or two. The problem was, it was freaking spearmint flavored puke!!! I promise you. You don't ever want to experience that. OMFG that was gross!!!

Anyhow, today I absolutely HATE anything mint flavored because of that. I use Cinnamon toothpaste and citrus Listerine just to avoid any type of mint punishment.

Now moving on to my quitting smoking.

I had been trying to quit smoking for at least 10 years and each attempt failed within probably 10 hours. (of awake time) I just couldn't deal with the jonesing. Anyhow, in 2000. I started feeling chest pains and what I was thinking was minor heart attacks. So, I said GDMFer, I have to quit this ****. So, I took account of all my cold turkey failures (congrats @BrAinPaiNt, I couldn't do it) and decided I would go with the patch to stop.

Well, the patch helped, but it didn't help enough. Finally on Oct 5th 2000, I altered the plan. I added Spearmint gum to the mix. Between the patch and spearmint gum. I could resist the urge to smoke. How you ask? Well, the patch curbed the urge enough, but not enough to quit. What the spearmint gum did, was inflame my hatred of mint so much that I forgot that I wanted a cigarette. I was literally couldn't focus on my urge to smoke because I was in complete torture from the spearmint gum. It was a completely different type of suffering and one that overpowered my urge to smoke.

There were other things I had to do like. I quit drinking for probably a six months to a year. (closer to a year) because I had a habit of smoking when I drank. I also quit taking breaks (including lunch) I would just eat at my desk. This was mainly because I always went out an smoked at lunch. I had to break all the habits to make it work and it did.

The most interesting thing about it was the fact that when my step-mother quit smoking. She used to get so angry at my bother and I because we smelled like smoke. She said we smelled liked ash trays. We though she was just mad because she quit smoking, but when I quit. I completely understood where she was coming from. I wish I would have told her that before she died... If you smoke. Stay the bleep away from me because you smell like a GD ash tray!!!

Anyhow, that's my story and I'm sticking too it. EAD

heh I said I would never pay more than $2 a pack and I didn't. As prices went up, I downgraded my cigs. I went from Marlboro to some generic crap. The most I ever paid was $2.07 and the .07 was tax. That was only because I ran out and didn't have a choice. What do I mean by that? I went from paying close to $2 a pack, to paying $2 a carton because my step-mother would buy the smokes on (military) base where you could get a carton for $2, not $2 a pack!

The military did away with that discount not long after due to how bad it was and they didn't want to help the guys kill themselves.

Well, it's not just "nicotine".

It's in a carrier, and a lot of them use propylene glycol and/or ethylene glycol which just don't have a lot of long-term studies in this use case, inhalation. And in some cases, pretty significant amounts.

Still not as bad as cigs, but long-term? No one really knows.

Other then that small nitpicking, do whatever you want. I didn't know about the FDA thing concerning JUUL, etc but that's just the tobacco lobby flexing it's influence. In some cases, the FDA can really just act like hired goons, it's pretty weak.

This is true, and yet false. It has added chemicals, but none of which are on par with what you get from a regular cig.

Acrylonitrile is in coffee.
N-Nitro is in regular cigs, along with hundreds of other toxins.

Basically, vaping on a Juul provides you with exposure to 1/500? toxins you'd be exposed to via smoking regular cigs.
Found this to back up my claim.

Also there is evidence that e-cigs deliver some toxic stuff of their own such as formaldehyde (a known carcinogen), nitrosamines (linked to cancer) and lead (a neurotoxin). Though the toxicant levels of e-cigs may be “9–450 times lower than in cigarette smoke,” as this study suggests, levels of formaldehyde and metals have been found to be comparable to or higher than those found in conventional cigarettes.* Silicate particles, which are a cause of lung disease, have also been found in e-cigarette vapors.

As stated, the long term affect can be just as harmful.

It’s not though. Why? Because ecig users don’t drag on as much as smokers do. Go ahead...watch. You’ll see a smoker take way more puffs than a ecig user does. This is the problem...people don’t factor in “cultural norms and behaviors”. If you’re not familiar with the sub culture of ecigs, vaping and pot? You’re not going to have a good grasp on the issue. I think smoking is unhealthy period. But to suggest Juul is somehow on par with cigs, or even popular with teens as the FDA claims? They don’t get it then...teens like dry herb and liquid pens. I see who’s using what from which sub culture. Hip hop nation likes blunts,gamer/skater nation likes dry herb and liquid pens or bongs, bums nation like roll your own tobacco, middle class or white collar likes standard slim ecigs,(particularly women) and people at bars drinking, smoke regular cigs and pot outside when they’re feeling good and socially lubricated. And as a general rule...vaping crowd usually = pot crowd. I also bet most people of aren’t familiar with “Wax and dabbing”? It’s what a lot of these vap pens are used for,and not nicotine at all.

I smoked Winstons when I started then Marlboro Reds for a few years and then Marlboro lights for probably 15 years, never tried anything else.

I did chew an obscene amount of ice breakers wintergreen gum the first couple of weeks. It was the closet thing I could get to full flavor menthols without the nicotene.

I stopped cigs in 93 but was never even a pack a day smoker and never a morning smoker so it was easier for me to quit than a 2 pack a day smoker. I followed the doc's plan in Playboy and it worked for me. Started by switching brands from my Camel Lights to something I wasn't crazy about and then after 3 days of that to menthol and by the time 8 days had rolled around, I was kicking the habit except for one thing, the oral fixation that accompanies smoking, the thing I missed the most was making smoke.

So, I got into the cigar craze just as it was beginning and while my wife hated the smell of cigarettes, she actually liked the smell of a good handmade cigar except after it was out. That smells really funky.

When I was a cigarette smoker, she would ask me to get the smell off my clothes before I came back in and well, I guess she got tired of asking. The day before I quit, I was coming back in from the patio, opened the door and she'd fired up the leaf blower and blasted me. I got the hint.

So, I've been a cigar man for the last 25 years and when the vaping thing came out, I thought about it but thought since that involves inhaling, might be really easy to slip back into cigs because I do miss the smoking part of it. And smoking cigars forces me to be patient, smoke it too fast and it will get screwed up. It's certainly not a healthy habit but neither is drinking, eating some of the foods I eat or probably anything I enjoy doing. If it's fun, it comes with a disclaimer.

So, I moved down here a couple of years ago and there's this lady that lives a few doors down. She's 80 and smokes about half a pack a day, according to her, and I was out front several weeks ago and she's coming back from her daily walk and lights up. I admit it, I do like the irony of that so I had to smart off to her about that and she laughed and walked over. I said "seriously, don't you worry about cancer"? She just looked me in the eye and said "most of my family is gone and this (holding up her cigarette) and 3 fingers of bourbon is one of the very few pleasures I have left so no, cancer can kiss my ***. I'm not having that good a time anyway". I just stood there and nodded because I got it.

If they don't, why is there like 15 times more smoke from vaping? It's like seeing Cheech and chong's up in smoke..lol

Ecigs don’t do that. That’s vaping. But either way it’s not the same thing at all. You’d have to try it to understand. It just isn’t on par with your garden variety smokers. None of this stuff is healthy mind you,but it’s nowhere near like cigs and cigars. Like If the FDA really wants me to take them seriously about their concern of youth and tobacco? Go after Swisher Sweets. That’s the #1 seller at your conscience stores. Always some 20 something buying 2-6 at a time in front of me in line.

They say it's healthier than regular smoking, but I'm skeptical. I won't do it.
It literally has 1/450th of the toxins that cigs do, and that doesn't factor in the amount of "drags" a vapor takes a day versus a smoker, which skews it in favor in vaping again.

I get the entire argument that we don't want our young getting hooked on nicotine..... but it has been happening for 50 years, and I'd rather my future son pick up a juul than a pack of marlboros. Lesser of two evils.
