How long do running quarterbacks last in the NFL?

Dak is a pocket QB, not a running QB. He isn’t even all that good of a runner. He isn’t particularly fast or agile... he’s just willing. Which is a part of it.
As long as he is just taking free yards off of misdirection or taking off when everyone’s covered - and just as important, sliding at the end - I don’t see why his career would be shortened. He should not be trying to run anywhere near as much as someone like Cam Newton. He is not anywhere near the athlete and it will only end up with him being carried out of the stadium feet first.

Cam Newton has been playing for 7 seasons now.

This plus,
Steve McNair, who Dak most reminds me of, played really well for a long time.
Steve Young...same although possibly the most overrated QB in the hof.

He definitely built like Steve and can see the similarities with Steve being a better passer.

Ftan Tarkenton, Roger Staubach, and Archie Manning were concidered running quarterbacks during a time in which there were no special rules to protect them. There was no such thing as "helmet to helmet", "in the grasp", and it took physical assault to call roughing the passer

All three of those guys had careers longer than 10 years. One of the greatest passer ratings in history belonged to a running QB, Steve Young, who enjoyed a long career.

Dak is only going going to be a running QB early in his career. As he matures and gains experience he will improve his reads and release time and become more of a passing QB. This is what happened to the above mentioned QB's. I

Roger Staubach - 10 years

410 career rushes netted him 2,264 yards and 20 touchdowns

six NFC Championship Games, won four of them, and also won Super Bowls VI and XII during Staubach's career.

Like any position, he is what he is.
If he can help the team win by mixing in some qb runs that is the way it is
Are the Cowboys supposed to limit themselves to a loosening record to potentially lenghthtn his career?
Probably not going to happen, but then again we still have Garrett as head coach so.....

Dak has to use his positives to overcome and offset his negatives and limitations as a qb

Steve was a big thick guy, bigger than Dak but similar mold. Steve was def better passer.
Steve was bigger than some of his OL in the latter years.
He would frustrate teams to no end as they'd bottle up his Wrs and sometime even hit him then bounce off and he'd run for a first down. For a defense, I would think a running QB that keeps moving the chains would have to be the most frustrating thing ever.

Our greatest QB ever, Roger Staubach, lasted 11 years, played in 5 SBs, 6 NFC championship games, and still holds the team record (Dak nearly broke Sun) for most rushing yards by a QB in a single game- 91 yards. Roger was one of the best running QBs in NFL history.

The key is to be smart. Running QBs who last are smart running QBs.
This is where the definition is flawed IMO.

Roger was a scrambler . Roger “ the dodger” should serve as the definition. I don’t recall designed running plays for him except a QB draw near the goal line.

And that should be the definition. Designed calls to run your QB. Not a QB who looks to run or extend if the play is broken down.

I'm sure most poeple are eagerly waiting for Dak to get hurt.

Some even say that the Cowboys don;t "run" Dak enough. But, there not really talking about him being a running QB. They're speaking of letting him do more roll out passes instead just always standing in the pocket. And mean how the Cowboys should let Dak play to his strengths of creating/extending plays with his feet (which includes pass plays when a play breaks down). And letting him being a threat to be able to run for big yardage comes just enough where it gives opposing Ds a more difficult time in trying to stop the Cowboys overall offense.

Here again I’d argue these were scrambling QB’s not designed running QB’s.

You don’t want him rushing for 80 yards a game but being a threat to run and keeping the defense honest is a good thing. I would have 3-5 designed runs for him and if he takes off 3 more times to get key 1st downs I am good with that too.

Yeah I was thinking you could call Young and Cunningham running QBs. They had long careers.
Cunningham had designed running plays but Young’s were mostly scrambling. I don’t recall designed running plays for Steve except maybe near goal line. At least in San Francisco. He might have more in Tampa?
