I seriously doubt that our FO is likely to invest another high pick to acquire Cam Brate.

I hereby predict that they'll elect to proceed with Dalton Schultz in the games to come.

The incumbent TEs currently available in front of him are lacking in impressive talent.

It is likely we're about to learn more of what Schultz has to offer in terms of his worth.

I'd rather just roll with Schultz. Not a ton of upside, but I think he can be a Geoff Swain type player for us

We gave a first for a player that might only be here a year, for a player that has regressed for the last 2 seasons and will cost us $14 million next year. Even if, and that's still a big if, he can return to resemble the player he was 2 seasons ago, we have no guarantees he would stay here. With Brate, we at least would be in control for the next 5 years and is an immediate upgrade to that position, not a hope he will be. If we don't make a play for him during this season, he needs to be on our radar during the off season. Jarwin will be gone and Rico finally needs to prove himself. After 3 years, if he can't get on the field and make a real impact, especially with the lack of talent we have at the position, he needs to get gone.
These speculations seem to believe that the FO didnt speak with the agent of Amari or any player before a big trade deal.

I read or heard on the radio that they asked for and got assurance from Amari or his agent that he would not demand a renegotiation before they pulled the trigger.

I counted the last 16 starts. 1 start this year, 6 starts last year, and last 9 starts the year before.
Hmm..according to the article this linked to, "Brate has 16 starts in his last two seasons, pulling down 950 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns."

Admittedly, I was taking that at face value.

He has 5 years on his contract

Yeah but...

You said he could be cut at any time after this year. If he doesn't pan out and we cut him after two years, are you gonna be happy we gave a 3rd rounder for him and only got two years?

over 50% of 3rd rounders don't ever make a start
Draft picks are way overvalued. I'd rather give up a pick for a proven player than spend it on a younger guy who may never turn into a good player. If we can spend a 4th and get brate, I'm all for it. I don't know enough about him to give an opinion on giving up a third.

But if you look at our history of drafting tight ends, we are better off trading that pick for a proven guy

Does anybody really think this team will make TWO trades in the same season?? Not happening.

The benefit with draft picks is their contracts. You can get a veteran TE like Brate for $7 million a season, but if you hit on say a rookie 2nd round TE, you have them under contract for 4 years at about $1 million a season. In a cap controlled league, guys who can over-perform their contracts like that are crucial.

That's why the Rams and Eagles are so darn good right now - they have QBs playing at a top 10 level for $7 million a year each, whereas market value for player like that wouldn't be a cent under $30 million. That $23 million in effective savings is enough to pay for players like Ndominant Suh or Fletcher Cox to support them.

That being said, rookies are never a sure bet and even the good ones take time to develop, but if you are looking at the teams who've won Super Bowls since the 2011 CBA, it's basically either the Patriots or teams with lots of young talent on rookie contracts.
