I’m going to be optimistic about this even though I wanted someone from the outside.

Maybe they’ll be awesome next season maybe not. If it’s a complete failure then JG will probably get the boot.

Jason's track record grooming coaches and the fact that boy Kellen is Scott Linehan's illegitimate son gives me every reason to be concerned.
First, Moore is not condemned because other coaches didn't branch out and do well. Second, while it's true there haven't been a lot of coaches under Garrett that have gone on to better things, that's not true of all coaches under Garrett. Matt Eberflus, for example, is in a better position than he was in Dallas. And finally, the Linehan's illegitimate son comment has zero factual basis. Clearly not every coach in history does exactly what someone he previously worked under did, and we have no foundation for saying Moore is locked into doing what Linehan did. Hell, what Linehan did in Dallas isn't even what Linehan did in Detroit when Moore was a PS QB.

Kellen Moore has been a running joke ever since he came here and now that he's the OC people are flip flopping like fish....lol

He's been a running joke with some, but that is not universal. Many questioned his experience, but many also understood that he was highly regarded by all who ever coached him or played with him. Many were willing to see how it went.

When the season was winding down, did anyone think Moore would even be on the Cowboys Staff next year?

I thought there was a high likelihood he would remain QC, but I didn't expect him to become OC. It wouldn't have even crossed my mind.

With Schefter's tweet about possibly no extension for Garrett, it's possible Moore was simply the backup plan as no experienced OC wanted to sign on for potentially only one year.

Merely "possible?"

That seems generous.

I'm persuaded the Occam's Razor conclusion is exactly that.

Moore might not have even been the backup plan... they'll never tell and we'll never know... but when they let Linehan go, there was a Plan A plausibly connected to Jerry's comment (ie, that this is the time of year when you wait to see who might become available) that they were hoping would materialize... and didn't....

And then there was this period in-between that, and when we first started hearing for the first time ever that the quarterback coach was, actually, a genius... when Plan B may have been getting explored...

And then, there has been this long period since those assertions started getting play, and this week, and at any point in that timeline, Moore might have been named, but wasn't, and so it's entirely plausible they were exploring Plan C...

And now, here we are.

Was Moore as OC the backup...

to the backup...

to the backup plan... ie, Plan D?

It will be denied. That's all we know for sure. But it's entirely plausible that that's the honest truth. Or, at least Plan C. Or, at the very least, Plan B.

That doesn't mean Kellen Moore won't be successful.

Sometimes you get lucky in spite of yourself. All we can do is hope this is an example of that.

This game is not really that complicated, and I think that Moore gets that.
A simple misdirection can often make a defense think twice.
Moore gets the very basics of what Linehan never understood in the first place.

He was a relatively bad QB coach for one year. No, he hasn't earned it. Being able to kiss skeletor's and Carrot's ***** isn't a coaching skill.

I don't disagree he hasn't earned it - he hasn't been coaching long enough for that. But do we really know he was a bad QB coach? How does a fan really know how much a QB coach is doing or not doing? If it's simply making an assumption based on success of the QB, Dak was definitely better in 2018 than in 2017. What other criteria would you use?

Dak was still arrant and inaccurate on a lot of throws. I swear, our WR corps have extendable arms somerimes. Don't throw the "completion percentage" number at me, ejther. Yes, a lot more passes were complete than non, but a sizable chunk that was catching balls behind them or way in front. Also, Dak had a few pick dixes dropped this year.

Linehan ran misdirection.

That is, when he had an offensive line proven trustworthy enough to run misdirection... 2016, for instance.

It always comes back to that.

To the degree you can't trust your offensive line, it seriously constricts what you have confidence in running.

Sometimes I think this team does stuff just to see the civil wars they create within the fandom.
