I understand the concern some folks have about Dak. I really do.
I also think it’s a fair concern to worry about sinking too much cap space into a QB- any QB who isn’t named Brady, Brees or Rodgers.
All that being said. There are a few things we need to think about and take into account when it comes to whether it’s wise to extend Dak or not.
Extending Dak means yes, less cap space and less ability to retain other players.
However, the alternative to extending Dak is to let him go and then try and draft another QB. I say that because if you do get rid of Dak. You aren’t going to find a FA QB that is any good, without also paying them a lot of money. Because any FA QB who is as good as Dak or nearly as accomplished is also going to cost a lot of money.
So where does that leave you. It means you have to draft a QB. We all know that the chances of drafting a Good QB past the early first round, is pretty slim. USUALLY you have to spend a high pick on a QB.
So to get a high pick, you have to tank or just organically have a losing season. Even then to get an elite prospect you need to probably have a top 5 pick.
So you probably have to trade away a bunch of draft picks to move up and draft someone.
If you trade away multiple picks, you ALSO hurt the teams ability to put talent around the QB. Just as badly as you hurt the teams ability to acquire talent, from paying cap space for a QB.
So, either route likely negatively impacts the teams ability to put talent around the QB.
Now, let’s also be real and admit that most QB’s drafted, even early in the first round, don’t end up being as good a QB as Dak has been so far. That’s just the truth. So if you go that route. You may end up with a QB only as flawed as Dak is. You very well may end up with a QB who ISNT even as good as
Dak.
So that means you have to try again. Which means more losing seasons because your QB stinks and you need a high pick to draft another.
So again, I understand that people are worrried about the team overpaying Dak. And it’s a fair concern in some ways. I also hope he doesn’t get TOP QB dollar. Although I also think people who think he should sign for 15 million a year are kidding themselves.
But some of you who are just so open to cutting him, and saying the cowboys should just move on, let’s be real. Going that route has a LOT of risks too. And likely means a bunch of losing seasons, unless the team nails its first shot at drafting a QB. Which everyone knows is no guarantee because of how many highly drafted QB’s bust.
