Stephen Jones comments on Dak's Contract

Don’t understand that correlation. Just saying it doesn’t seem wise to go to a negotiation having told the agents you’re at their mercy.

Lol....you don't think the agent know there's not another qb on the roster, and really none in the draft that you can reach. You also won't be able to reach one next year, so what's the secret.

My hope is that they are trying to slide in and get Dak on a discount.

And ugh at talking extension with Elliott now.

Elliott still has 2019 and then the Cowboys could exercise the 5th year option on him for 2020 so I seriously doubt the Cowboys will try to extend Elliott this off season. Jerry did say he will extent Elliott but said nothing about doing it this off season.
.

Because he's an idiot like his father.

They want people to think that they are sure about the qb of the future for this team. If they say it enough maybe the fans will believe it. Every time they mention the great things about Dak they mention team success not individual success. So I guess Looney deserves an extension to because he centered a team to a division title. Sheez.

because they'd save money. And would be able to get out of a deal with him quicker. I dont think this team wants to be tied up to a rb for long anymore. 6=7 yrs with Elliot seems like a good amount and off to the next one.

I have never seen any NFL team approach an extension this important by giving up as much leverage as they have.

Eh, I would tend to agree, but they typically don't give out completely odd contracts either. Seems like they know what they're doing when they talk to the agent at least.

The secret is valuation. Obviously he’s going to get paid, but there are very serious arguments against him as far as how much. About how effective he is without premiere weapons etc. there is room for negotiation until you publicly build the case for him. I’d imagine they are looking for 30 mil annually. If you come in talking 20 with good supporting arguments, then maybe 25-28 is doable. Instead you’re setting the floor

The Joneses have their issues. Not knowing how to negotiate is not one of them. Nothing is being given away over Twitter here.

Because he's slated to earn so little next season, they shouldn't feel compelled to give in too much. If they don't extend him and he plays out his current contract, unless I'm mistaken they can roll over that savings into next year's cap to cover any increase in value should he have a big year. So his future value would have to go up significantly for them to really lose out by waiting a year.

They can do it either way. They could also extend him now, blend this year's cheap cost for Dak into the long term deal to effectively discount those future years. He gets his money early, they get him signed and free up the tag to use next year with Elliott, we take some additional cap hit this year when we can afford it and free up space each year of Dak's deal thereafter.

Both sides know the market and have an interest in getting a deal done early. The only debate is in the specifics of the comps they're going to use to slot Dak in with the rest of the starting QBs in the league.

The same goes for Elliott. He's not signing for less than Gurley did two years after Gurley signed. That's pretty obvious. You don't get leverage in a negotiation disputing the obvious and trying to convince someone you're right.

Not being sarcastic, but what is the advantage of announcing your intentions, why not just negotiate with your player quietly? He said this about Dak and Zeke so far... Curious.

My best guess is marketing and keeping said players happy by saying what they want to hear...

You don't get it. They feel he's the man. They want him
They are telling you that from the get go. What you feel about him don't matter, they feel differently

You’re mistaken. I haven’t given an opinion or how I feel. I’m explaining to you why it’s not smart to approach negotiations this way

This is common knowledge whether the armchair GMs around here like it or not.... *Shrugs*

Like father, like son.

Actually, the son may be worse. I can't recall the father ever publicly capitulating in contract negotiations the way junior does. Even if you believe this stuff why would you hamstring your bargaining position by telling the world? It's shockingly stupid.

How can you say this? The evidence continues to mount that Stephen (and Jerry) has no clue what he's doing. From starting negotiations with the Raiders by immediately meeting their asking price for Cooper, through telling everyone that negotiations with Zeke start at what Gurley got, to now telling everyone that Dak needs to be paid progressively when I think most would agree that there's still some question about what we have in him.

Compare Stephen's tactics to the those employed by MLB teams in arbitration (the closest analogue I can think of). If anything, MLB teams have to be careful not to overly offend their players in the arbitral proceedings. They certainly don't make public statements that would support the players' bargaining position.

They've been negotiating contracts far than you I'm sure, they know what they're doing
