Can't wait to pay Zeke

You don’t draft guys 4th overall for just 4 years.

That would be monumentaly stupid.

Top 5 guys are expected to be 10 yr cornerstone players for your franchise.

Thats why you never draft a RB at 4th overall.

That IS monumentaly stupid!

!!!

For those of you who think Barkley is better then Zeke. Please tell me what big game did Barkley play in this year. Also tell me how many games did the Giants win. Zeke is the reason why we win and I am a Dak fan. If we had Zeke in 2017 we would have went to playoffs that year as well. I would pay Zeke before DLaw, Dak, and Cooper.

Who cares about a RBs career ?!

I need a RB for his 4 rookie years to produce at the highest rate. After that i will draft another one.

when you own a football team you can do whatever you want. I fully expect Dallas to get a deal with Zeke.

I really dont know what to expect.

Maybe 10 years ago i would have agreed with you. But in the last few years it seems like Dallas has come to mind when handing out contracts.

If Zeke had been dealing with injuries like we saw with Murray both in college and pros I would be less likely to extend him but Zeke has maintained great health and is a key part of this offense. My belief is not the carries that wear out a RB it is the injuries that take their toll.

Dont missunderstand me. I like Zeke as a RB.

I just dont think you should count on a RBs career to be longer then 6-7 years (producing meaningfull yards).

I do think its not a either-or question between injuries and the wear and tear. Its a combination of both. And the wear and tear can be viewed as minor injuries too.

Another Problem to RBs careers is that when they decline its quiet often very fast. The one season they are still very good, the next they are very very medicore. That fast decline is a risk that should be kept in mind too.

So overall i would never give a RB a second contract. And that is one of the reasons i would never draft a RB that high.

But again this is nothing against Zeke. Its just my logical approach to the position.

For me it's simple. Forget who the name on the jersey is - whether it's Elliott or Barkley or Bell or whomever you think is the best TB in football.

I simply do not think it's a wise investment to lock up a TB, in today's NFL, where they'd be making serious money and taking up a huge chunk of cap space in their late 20s. People are trying to make this an anti-Elliott thing.

For me, it's not anti-Elliott. It's anti-TB.

I see it different. I think with an ample off season he will be ready to go. Every RB I have seen that people mention as a stat to show how a RB declines I can point to the injuries they have suffered that lead to that decline. Those who can maintain good health have been able to continue a fairly good work load.

Zeke's biggest game, he had below 3 ypc. What did he do against the Seahawks in 2017 when it was win or go home?

How many RBs have maintained their health in the NFL? This waiting around for the next Smith isn't going to happen.

The Seattle game where he had been on the shelf the previous 6 weeks? I mean, the dude is really good, but ain't too many guys AT ANY POSITION coming back with a huge game after being off 6 weeks. And, he had 97 yards that game.

He had 97 yards on 24 carries for barely 4 YPC. And what the hell does being out six weeks have to do with anything? He wasn't injured, he was suspended. He had playing time during the season and was in football shape (supposedly).

You're the folks who say we win due to Zeke - if we win because of him, we lose because of him. You can't pick or choose here.

RBs generally don't last for 10 years as cornerstone players.

What IS monumentally stupid though is shelling out big money for a RBs decline years. Zeke has what, 2 years left on his deal counting the option? at which point he will be 26 at the beginning of the 2021 season. We've seen backs start declining in the late 20's and zeke has had a TON of use.

There's an expiration date on RBs, even the good ones. Don't pay for it. Simply move on to the next back. Spend the money on positions that are harder to find than RB, like CB/DE/QB instead.

The problem is, Zeke is already interested in an extension. I can tell you now, his agent is getting close to phoning up Jerry and getting the ball rolling. No agent for an RB will recommend playing out an option - they know the shelf life just like everyone.

Zeke will holdout.

Then we move on. It should be that simple.

And he couldn't contribute late in the playoffs. He was worse than a back plucked off the street when the games mattered most.

When was the last time a premier pass rusher or DB had to have their "workload managed" in the prime of their career one year into a massive extension?

A lot of that had to do with how bad our coaches schemed. The Rams knew they could just gang up against the run and dare Dak to beat them with the pass, which he didn't.

Seriously? I don't care how great of shape your in - being in shape and "football game shape" are two completely different things. If you haven't carried a football WHILE BEING HIT for 6 weeks, coming back and running the ball 24 times can be an arduous task.

That's why you don't pay them in their late 20s.

I've been saying it: write a contract that voids Elliott's 5th year option and replaces it with a 4 year deal. Zeke will be 24 at the start of this season. If you guarantee the first 3 years Gurley style, the new contract will pay for his age 25, 26, and 27 seasons. 28 is effectively a team option year, and you owe him nothing beyond that.

Before someone mentions how "but 27 is a player's late 20s!" - 27 is historically the peak age of RB performance.
