Vernon had one season over 8 sacks and the Giants gave him an 85 Million dollar deal, that was a ridiculous overpayment.

The truth is, these mega-contracts end up being bad deals for the team most of the time.

I agree that it was, but the fact is that it set the market. I also think the Bears ultimately gave up way too much for Khalil Mack, but that also set the market.

DLaw had a great season in 2017 but before that he was only healthy one season out of three, it made sense to do the Franchise Tag as an interim step before committing huge dollars to a guy with real question marks.

In a vacuum? Based solely on the factors you're mentioning? Yes, maybe it did. But based on knowing that Donald and Mack would be getting new deals and resetting the market? It was dumb. And now they're stuck.

The one guy that has earned his payday more than anyone and the team is unable to get a deal done:

I still laugh at the word so casually thrown around regarding salary negotiations...."disrespect". Unless they're insulting him with a really lowball number, which I doubt, this isn't about respect and these athletes need to keep in mind what earns respect and it has little to do with that contract.

The challenge for the Cowboys is these other players they want to keep and they should have kept their mouths shut about wanting to extend the QB who is already under contract. They had the chance to extend Lawrence while he was under contract and decided to wait and to tag him twice.

The "mouth that never stops never learns". What was wrong with just keeping quiet? If they want to do Prescott's deal, they could have waited until Lawrence's situation was decided. Now, who can blame him for seeing the connection? And think he isn't hearing this 27-30M number being tossed around? Why in the hell should he take a hit to overpay a QB?

One part that is undeniable. The Cowboys failed miserably to anticipate the market for defensive linemen and get ahead of this thing.

They could have gotten a deal done based around the $17 million a year Olivier Vernon got with the Giants. But they waited, and the Mack and Donald deals reset the market.

That's on the Cowboys.
When Dallas placed the FT on Lawrence last year, he had compiled one really good year (14.5 sacks in 2017) and one "average" year (8 sacks in 2015) coupled with two injury plagued, below average years in 2014 and 2016.

While the Cowboys played a bit of option theory with the FT in 2018, two things were clear at that time: the price for a DE, above average or not, was only going to go up and, if Lawrence could put the injury "label" behind him, he would command top dollar.

I have no problem with the Cowboys taking the "wait and see" attitude with Lawrence with regard to the first franchise tag. Conversely, I have no problem with the FO balking at setting the market now with Lawrence and trying to extract value another way via a trade.

If he thinks he's as good as Mack and Miller, he may have been hiding in the background of David Irving's "Retirement" video.................cuz HE'S HIGH AS BLEEP if he thinks that. Even at 30, I'd take Von Miller over DLaw any day.

So how would you propose to fix this current predicament then? If you have no problem with how they got here?

A few things to note here.

One, OL tend to last longer and be highly productive in later years than most positions. Also, none of those three have been suspended for failing a drug test. And when they signed their extensions, I don't believe any of the three had a back issue or shoulder problem that keeps cropping up. Smith's back issues really came into light after his extension, I believe.

Those are the kind of facts Leveon Bell seemed to miss as well.

We will see how it goes!

Also, Slater gave the ol "they like their guys", routine when asked about the Dline.
So, after Jerry saying he is feeling his mortality a little. Stephen saying they would not be conservative this year, they need to take the next step.
They will not sign Thomas - siteing cost.
No Dline help until late in draft.
If they cannot get a deal done with Lawrence, he will have his surgery in July, after being franchised. Be disgruntled and play minimally.
The usual up/ down - up/ down season we have become accustomed to.
It's a mess of their own making.

He actually has more sacks than Von Miller over these past two years, being a complete defensive end and not a pass rush specialist, so there is that...
