Most teams are geared to defend the passaging more than the running game because most offenses favor the pass attack over the run. The Cowboys being a run heavy team gives them an advantage over most teams. The combination of a great OL and RB are the hardest offensive attack to stop and for defenses the most frustrating to be beaten by when they know its coming but they can't do anything about it. A balanced attack is a great ability to have but I advocate the run heavy attack as long as it's working for you. The Cowboys do need a better passing game so I would never want them to neglect having it if the situations warrants switching to it. It's a game situational thing, something I think Kellen Moore better understands and is willing to make in-game adaptations to.
I can't wait to see what Kellen Moore's offense looks like. Most people think because you don't have the tools you don't have the intelligence. I just laugh

If I am running the front office, I make a run at CJ Anderson. We couldn't stop him and that's the reason why we were put of the playoffs. Sign him to backup Zeke and draft a roster hopeful late in the draft.

I like him too but I can't help but to think he stays with the Rams, especially given Gurley's knee situation. In fact, I'm surprised he doesn't have a deal there already.

Wasnt the 1996 draft a backup draft? The year after the SB win... ( I said SB win... Imagine that.) Jerry I believe came out and said we drafted for depth. I think our great pick that year was Kavika Pittman.

People always claim that it was a backup draft. But ultimately we didn't have holes to fill, so it ended up as depth. I doubt very much that we purposely passed on the best players to draft guys with lower ceilings.

That draft was all about Jerry trying to imitate Jimmy and trade back to look smart. Outside of Randall Godfrey, he showed just how bad he was at this

Damien Harris (ALA)

Are my potential choices inthe 3rd/4th round. Proven guys against elite competition that could help take the load off of Zeke.

Yep.. I remember like it was yesterday... little did we know how deep of a hole we were falling into. Man what a mediocre run of 24 years. It just show you how strong the Cowboy brand is. If Jerry would hire someone to run the team like he markets it we would have had another few SB’s in hand.

I am not going to quarrel with this point, as I get where you are coming from. If Zeke were to go on IR in the first game I somehow do not think that you would feel the same way.

I think it's a much higher priority than most do. We got by with Rid Smith last year because we really didn't play him at all. That's a recipe for disaster for Zeke. We simply can't play him every down and expect him not to get seriously injured at some point due to fatigue.

There’s no denying taking our best player at any position out of the lineup makes that position a higher priority in the draft. It’s still a position you can easily fill from the compensatory 4th on down.

But then, I also would have filled Zeke’s job with a 2nd or 3rd rounder. It was a waste to spend the draft capital we did on the RB position when good players can be found throughout the top 100 picks in any given draft.

Backup running back is literally the least of my concerns.

Out of all the issues we have on this roster (QB, DT, DE, S, TE), idk why yall are fixated on someone who will be irrelevant to this team’s success.

Totally agree. We need a RB who is good enough to 1) take some pressure off Zeke by carrying some of the load. 2) Be good enough to win with if Zeke is injured. If he can also return kicks/punts, that's a plus.

We also didn't have a pick until the 3rd round.... 10 of the 12 picks were after #100

I would also add TJ Yeldon to this list. I think both Yeldon & Montgomery can do some kick return duties as well.

Flexibility is what the player needs to be. Able to run between the tackles so as to not tip off the D but also able to do a variety of other things to give the offense some options in how your pre snap formations look.
Yeldon is perfect because he can be effective in a 3rd down role OR handle 20 carries a game. I like Spencer Ware for the same reason, as well.

There's just too much variance with rookies to expect them to carry the load if Zeke goes down. They should be pursuing a veteran AND a rookie.

I don't think the draft will solve what happened vs the Rams. 273 yards rushing is almost unheard of in today's NFL, even teams with less talent than us wont let that happen.
:hammer:

What makes it worse, is most of them came from a washed up CJ Anderson of all people. Itd be one thing if Gurley wrecked us because he’s that talented. But, Cj Anderson??

You are thinking of a more recent draft - the one where we got cute and wouldn't trade up a tiny bit to get the only guy we had strongly targetted - Max Unger. We had two 2s in this one.

Yeah I was talking about 2009....fans called it the Special Teams draft... it was a disaster but that entire Draft was bereft of talent

Bereft of talent? Three pro bowl punters taken in that draft!

The odd thing was that it was projected as a weak draft. We knew that and wouldn't give up some later round picks to get up three spots to get Unger. We also then traded out when we could have taken the very solid Andy Levitre. We'd been struggling with the line for a while then ... and whiffed on two day one starters.
