I just hope we don’t make Dak a top 5 paid QB or anything ridiculous.

He’s probably right around the 15th best QB in the league. So I don’t know why he wouldn’t get league average money. But whatever. I’ve resigned myself to it.

I like Dak. I think we can win with Dak. But he’s not elite. We shouldn’t pay him like he is.

I agree with you but he's getting top 5 money

Problem is that when you give top 5 money at a key position to an average player you hamstring yourself

Top 5 QB contract today can very well be a top 15 contract 3-4 years from now.

Exactly. It's a wheel, not a line. Adjusted for % of cap, a top-15 deal at the outset is going to be bigger than some top-5 QB deals that are several years old.

Plus, I don't think Dak's a league-average QB. He'll be in the top 10-12 range when it's said and done.

Dak will get top 3 QB money, because what other option does this team have? It'll be somewhere around $28 - $29 million per year with a huge signing bonus. The Cowboys have no choice, this will happen. I do wonder what kind of money Dak would get from another team if the Cowboys did let him walk. I honestly don't see any other teams out there offering what the Cowboys will be forced to offer, but I could be wrong. It only takes one.

Gotta be honest here, I hated to hear Stephen say this contract stuff on Dak. Not because I hate Dak, on contrary, I like him. I hated it because it tells me that Garrett isn't going anywhere. Who signs a QB like Dak to a big time contract when you might have to fire your HC and bring in somebody else? Nobody does that because you want to allow your new HC to make changes and you don't want him tied to a contract on a QB that might not fit his scheme.

Lots of people here who have no clue how market-value contracts work.

It’s also amusing to me that people think an “average QB” is capable of going 32-16 without a great supporting cast.

2016: great OL, great RB, average receiving weapons, average defense

2017: solid OL, great RB for 10 games, average receiving weapons, average defense

2018: average OL, great RB, average receiving weapons, good defense

Oh, and everyone HATES Jason Garrett, right? So go ahead and toss in “dreadful coaching”.

There is no universe in which an “average QB” can go 32-16 with those teams.

Please list the 14 QBs in the NFL better than Dak?

Since it’s sports jargon reasonable people can disagree, but there is no credible definition of “franchise QB” that would include Dak.
Then again, is Andy Dalton a franchise QB? Most people would say no, but don’t look now he’s about to start his 9th season with the Bengals.
Either way, Stephen is a buffoon.

I don't think it's fair to call the OL average last year. Not as good as they have been in years past, thats fair to me but they were still pretty good last year, especially in the run game. Just my opinion.

Big difference between "the" franchise quarterback and "a" franchise quarterback... I will keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best.
Go Cowboys:flagwave:
