Outside this board, the Cowboys are getting some good grades for this draft

We went into the draft with a glaring need at safety and passed value picks with our first two picks. Hard to justify. We took a guard early when we already have Williams, Looney, Sua Fila and Redmond. Even if we moved Williams to RT we have depth on the interior offensive line. I can't give it more than a C with us blowing off a chance to improve a spot of weakness.

They didn't even have to be savvy. All they had to do was take players that fell right in their laps.

I hate drafting for need. I hate passing on a player who's at the top of your board because the draft is deep at his position, taking a lesser player at another position and then taking a lesser player at his position later on. Makes zero sense to me. What makes even less sense is trading down and picking nine players. Who knows where Hill would have gone, and he may turn out to be a 300-lb Arron Donald, but I'd much rather have taken one of the safeties at #58 and traded up from #90 for Hill, at the cost of one or two of five players who were never going to make the roster anyway. I like McGovern and as always I'm gonna root hard for Hill, but I like the idea of rooting for Hill and Rapp or Thornhill a lot better.

I agree to an extent. But as much as we fans think S is a glaring need, they don’t. And I don’t think Thornhill is a good enough tackler to be a SS for us. He’d be a great FS, but we have one we like in Woods. Rapp would have been a good pick. Liked him... but we REALLY needed a talented 3 tech. Collins is fine, but upside of Hill is greater. If we hit on this kid, and get consistent interior pressure, it really transforms this defense into an elite unit. Much more than a good S would. Just my opinion.

I wish my teachers had been so kind to give me great grades before I took the tests.

The biggest waste of time, but required as part of their job, are these post draft grades these analysts and writers give these teams. No one can grade this draft until at least the end of this season, at the earliest, except for the 1st round pick. Based on need and addressing that need, A.

The Cowboys did address their needs, although not at Safety where some wanted, and got a solid backup RB in the 7th and a potential weapon that we might see as the first pearl in this oyster, dependent on how the OC implements him.

You mean one of the worst safeties in the league could still possibly start?

The common thought about drafting is it takes three years to see what you actually received as far as coachable talent. Seldom do you see an LVE kind of player, and especially after the first round.

I don't spend much time studying the draft. Fact is, none at all. I go watch the videos after the name has been called. Hill's videos show a guy who has a great first step, but doesn't seem to close the deal much.

But, is he coachable and can Marinelli change that? I don't know.

So me throwing a tantrum immediately after the pick is ridiculous. Even though I was dead against LVE last year. I was so wrong I have immortalized it in my signature. So I do this too.

Makes me think of that joke about the young bull and the old bull standing on a hill overlooking a herd of cows.

Maybe we all should walk down there and screw them all.

Does anyone out there do a "Grade the Graders" analysis?

It would be interesting to go back and look at histories and see which graders actually turn out to be more intelligent graders than the others.

Would especially be interesting to see if all the major media graders are worthy of their widely-read status.

Every time Hill's name is mentioned going forward, I just.

I also believe that passing on Thornhill will be a big mistake. I really hope that hill grows up and can be good defensive tackle that this team needs because I have a feeling that Thornhill is going to be a big player for the chiefs.

I suppose that's better than nothing, but it would be cool to see someone take the time to look at every list of grades for, say, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015... time enough to have some idea of how the draftees have turned out... and grade the after-draft graders. Anyone can do a mock draft, and some get paid for it. Anyone can grade drafts, and some get paid for it. Do the paid ones deserve getting paid? Some more so than others?

Seems I do recall someone did something like that specific to mock drafts... and that David Jeremiah and our own Dane Brugler did especially well. But this would be for day-after grades... somewhat different.

Why does it have to be one or the other? My point was that we could have had both but instead chose for one and a bunch of guys who will never make the team.

It’s fun to speculate and grade drafts every year. Realistically however, who the heck knows how it will turn out. One thing is for certain, it’s kinda pointless to argue over it at this point. Anyways.....
I agree to a point. But isn't it pointless to argue over anything about the team you root for? It's pointless to argue over who gets credit for a W, we won, who cares? Who gets blame for a L, we lost, who cares? Who's the coach? Why argue, we have NO control over that. Who starts ? Why argue, we have NO control over that.

I agree it's fun to grade and speculate over the draft. But we're going to have different speculations and grades which is going to turn into arguments. But isn't that what sports forums are for, to discuss and argue over pointless things we have no control over? Lol

I get what you what you are saying though , and agree.

Liked your post, TwoDeep3. I treat the draft the same way. I watch college football, I don't study it. Once in awhile a player will catch my eye, or I won't see why some player is getting a lot of hype. My main reason for liking your post though was for the "young bull, old bull" reference.

NFL Network Michael Robinson gave us a B+ while Jack Del Rio gave us a C. They were both kind to the rest of the NFCE....iggles As, NY B and Wash A+

Safety wasn't glaring. Woods is the FS. He's good. SS we have Heath, Iloka, Frazier. Not great, but not glaring.

I bet there is a post like this on every football board about every NFL team, and the fans of those teams feel the same.

Jack Del Rio gave us a C on NFL network
Mike Rob gave us a B because he counted amari as a pick.

Lowest grades out of the NFC east

When you say “your” board, do you mean the Cowboys board or your own board?

While I've wanted an elite Safety, I disagree that we didn't address the position. We clearly did before the draft signing George IIoka. And if we get better stopping the run on defense, specifically at DT then the secondary won't need to be the last line of defense like it was vs. LA.
I will always support drafting linemen.
