Fisher: Cowboys wanted CB or Safety at 90

Cowboys also wanted Paxton Lynch and Connor Cook 3 years ago. And, well, we got lucky and got Dak. Sometime, it is better to get what you didn't want at first.

Both sides of the coin happen, I'm guessing at the end when it is all said and done we would wish it were the other way.

I think that’s a legitimately fair question.

You can even argue they take Hill at 58 (since they valued him more than either Thornhill or Rapp), then trade up and secure Will Harris somewhere before pick 90.

I’m of the mindset you put yourself into position to grab the highest rated players on your board (within reason). The notion of “we let the board come to us” is problematic.

Id much rather walk away from the Draft with 4-5 players you targeted versus 7-8 players you settled on.
I totally and 100% agree with you. Quality over Quantity. Most of those late picks we made probably would have been UDFA anyway.

I'm not going to pretend like I know more than people whose jobs depend on the Cowboys being successful and McGovern will probably turn out to be a good pick. Hopefully at least he will be better than our last third round offensive lineman. But, there were two pretty highly rated safeties there with Hooker and Thompson and the DE Zach Allen all of whom were rated a little higher than McGovern on NFL.com. In addition to that counting Cooper, McGovern, and Pollard three of our first four picks were used on offense. Our offense should be dominant this year. I know I will be watching Allen, Thompson, and Hooker with interest in how well they turn out.

Allen was actually taken at the beginning of the third.

If Fisher is accurate, this would seemingly refute those that defend the Cowboys by saying they use BPA. They just admitted McGovern was a better prospect than Hill but took Hill anyway. SO clearly they draft by need at times. And that's not shocking because they did the same thing with Charlton. Hopefully this turns out better than Taco.

And I think it's clear that they took Hill largely under the premise that there would be a safety at either 90 or even in the 4th that they liked. I suspect those two were Harris in the 3rd and Willis in the 4th. But both got snatched before their pick and they were left to try to argue that this was all part of the plan.............. that they weren't going to invest a lot in the S position.

Like I said earlier...just winging it...w/ no plan. This draft was just full of mistakes...over valuing players. I think we got cute a few times...thinking we could pass on a guy like Isaiah Johnson, CB (Houston)...and still get him later....which backfired.

We got out manuevered by New England ....Patriots (from Chicago): Damien Harris, RB (Alabama)

Which in hindsight ....think is a blessing indiguise...

The pick that is still baffeling is...Connor McGovern, G (Penn State) ...But from everything we are starting to hear...Viking and Jets were all in play to get him.

So to sit and take him...is looking like the right move considering.....

It takes Conner Williams out of playing guard...where he struggled. Which was our biggest weakness last year on offense. So in a way...it's an addition by subtraction....not to say Conner can't have success playing tackle later.

Still pretty baffeling we didn't address TE...and not convinced Donovan Wilson, S (Texas A&M) is the answer we are looking for @ safety.

That's right I was looking at the wrong page. Here are the defensive players rated above McGovern and one right after. Offensive lineman are hard to find in the third but maybe we found a diamond in the rough. If McGovern turns out to better than Chaz Green who we also took in the third round I'm happy but there were some defensive options when we made the pick.

S Chauncey Gardner R4P3 I heard he had a bad interview
CB Julian Love R4P6
Edge Christian Miller
R4P13 he was a 30 visit but injury prone
LB Mack Wilson R5P17 Probably something going on there, we weren't the only ones that passed on him must of fallen for a reason
S Hooker R4P14 not as good of athleticism as the other top safeties but could have been a good box safety. Before the draft a lot of people were hoping DL then Hooker at 90.
S Thompson R5P1 He really fell right before the draft I think he had injury issues
DE D'andre Walker R5P30 Fell to round 5 for a reason
DE Anthony Nelson R4P5 he was ranked just below McGovern 5.74 grade vs. 5.78 for Mcgovern

This is why Jerry is the man for Berry. Jerry has a sports medicine center and is willing to take risks.

Incentive laden contract protects both sides. Berry gets the chance to play on a big stage auditioning for the league for next year. Everyone is a winner.
Sports medicine center not withstanding Berry's injury is chronic in a place that will severely degrade performance his heel near the Achilles. And as of right now I guess berry is not on bard with an incentive laden deal or he would be here.

How is this being misrepresented? It's right there in the video...everyone can look for themselves. Point being...our draft is still being directed by a senial guy that probably puts in half the time to know how the draft is going to go.

If you study the draft...put together a draft board...you can get a sense of who is going where. I do it every year....yet here is a video of a room full of guys that are just winging it.

From a fans perspective....that's unacceptable. This is supposed to be a professional organization. Their philosophy of "let the draft come to us"...is flawed.

I did look at the video, and you misrepresented how the exchange went. That's right there for everyone to see.

As for "winging it", they didn't know what proposals were going to be on the table as the draft unfolded. No team does, and therefore each team has to field those proposals, weigh them, and make a decision on the spot. They can't pre-plan for that. It's ridiculous you don't understand that. And, the fact is, the discussion on those proposals went smoothly and easily and took very little time.

You act as if other teams are able to set their board and select the auto-draft feature and then sit back and watch.

When the Cowboys took McGovern he was the only player left on their board with a second round grade. I guess they weren't looking at NFL.com. Go figure.

Yeah go figure. Now that he's a Cowboy, like everyone else here, I'll be rooting for him.

So they basically admit to not drafting BPA.

How so?

They hoped that Will Harris or Layne fell to 90.

They didn’t.

So they took BPA (McGovern).

How do we know Harris or Layne weren’t ranked higher than McGovern on their board?

Some of you all act like we passed on Deion Sanders or something. If its Heath you got the issue with then he needs to be cut but clearly we have issues all across the secondary. They are virtually last in the league at getting turnovers. Our line got gashed in the playoffs and late in the regular season i think that was a bigger issue.

The right choice was made in round 2 IMO. I think there was several more outlets stating Hill as a second round prospect than those stating he was a 4th or 5th. With limited picks anyhow I didnt think the cowboys felt trading up to be ideal proposition.

Lets see how those 2 safeties pan out before we go saying its Taco charlton all over again.
