I think that’s a legitimately fair question.

You can even argue they take Hill at 58 (since they valued him more than either Thornhill or Rapp), then trade up and secure Will Harris somewhere before pick 90.

I’m of the mindset you put yourself into position to grab the highest rated players on your board (within reason). The notion of “we let the board come to us” is problematic.

Id much rather walk away from the Draft with 4-5 players you targeted versus 7-8 players you settled on.

Of course it's much easier to make these decisions after the fact, knowing when players were taken, and even so, it's not a sin to not have everything go exactly the way a team wants on draft day. That's the way it is with every team.

Heath is a great ST player and dime package guy. Don't hate a guy because this front office doesn't know how to acquire talent at the position.
Every team needs guys like him. It's just that most of them don't ask him to start..

They know how to acquire talent at every position, that just don't choose to do it at every position. For whatever reason the Cowboys are choosing not to do it at safety.

They may have wanted a CB or safety at 90, but they did end up with a guy that will prove critical to keeping the offensive line relevant long term.

Connor McGovern was my favorite pick of this draft and he will allow Connor Williams to move to right tackle in 2020. They upgraded two line spots with one pick here.

They basically said in the press conference that McGovern was by far the best player available and that's why they took him.

If they had an actual competition at right tackle, Williams might start. He was a better college player there and Collins has been better inside.

Calvin Watkins wrote an article on The Athletic about the war room discussions, it was very clear the issue with McGovern was that he was the last of their picks with a second round rating and he was sitting there at the end of the 3rd round. He said Kellen Moore and Marc Columbo went though their thoughts, but no one in the room had any reason to go away from BPA when the guy was rated so much higher than that draft spot.

He also said they think McGovern can challenge for playing time THIS year, which was interesting.

@ the 13:58 .....god this team is scary....too many cooks in the room. Had 2 offers on the table to trade down...and everyone wanted to do something different.

Garrett wanted to trade down 3 spots

Jerry said...let's make the pick

Stephan wanted to trade down all the way down to the bottom of the 3rd...and pick up a 5th and a 6th.....from Baltimore

Somehow...Jerry won out...when he asked if the player (Mcgovern) was the player they liked. They all agreed...since they had a 2nd round grade on the guy. :omg:(questionable)

The rest is history. But by watching this video...you see the disfunction within the process. In the end...it's still Jerry making the final decision. Scouts don't have much input in the final say...It'sJerry...and the coaching staff.

This is a total misrepresentation of what was on the video. There was no disfunction at all, and in fact it seemed to go very smoothly.

They had several options, they discussed, and they reached a decision very quickly and easily.

How else were they supposed to reach a decision in a very short time frame without throwing out thoughts and discussing? Do you want there to be no discussion and one guy makes unilateral decisions regardless of what anyone else thinks?

How is this being misrepresented? It's right there in the video...everyone can look for themselves. Point being...our draft is still being directed by a senial guy that probably puts in half the time to know how the draft is going to go.

If you study the draft...put together a draft board...you can get a sense of who is going where. I do it every year....yet here is a video of a room full of guys that are just winging it.

From a fans perspective....that's unacceptable. This is supposed to be a professional organization. Their philosophy of "let the draft come to us"...is flawed.

If Fisher is accurate, this would seemingly refute those that defend the Cowboys by saying they use BPA. They just admitted McGovern was a better prospect than Hill but took Hill anyway. SO clearly they draft by need at times. And that's not shocking because they did the same thing with Charlton. Hopefully this turns out better than Taco.

And I think it's clear that they took Hill largely under the premise that there would be a safety at either 90 or even in the 4th that they liked. I suspect those two were Harris in the 3rd and Willis in the 4th. But both got snatched before their pick and they were left to try to argue that this was all part of the plan.............. that they weren't going to invest a lot in the S position.
