True but last time Garrett was in the final year of his contract the Cowboys went 12-4 and Jerry then extended the deal. Hard to say what Jerry would do if this team fails to live up to his own expectations. I don't buy into it is SB or bust but I do think Jerry expects them to build off of last season and show improvement.
Of course and it made Jerry’s decision easy.

Im not sure what the specific expectations are this year? Thats a very general description without ultimatum included. Fans are creating their spin and interpretations.

I agree, Do I think Garrett is on a bit of a hot seat? Yes, I do think a poor season would likely end in his time in Dallas. Reality however is since HC are not part of the cap they can be fired at any point and time. Garrett last contract 5 year 30 mill I would not think that would deter Jerry from firing Garrett

He has said as much but didn't tie Garrett's job to that as Lurie did with Reid. He said he sees no reason why they shouldn't improve and I see quite a few possible reasons.

The question about improvement is dependent on so many elements that are unknowns at this time and he's expecting better because he's an optimist. For his expectations to be met the OC must be better in his first year than a seasoned vet was, Williams must improve and Yosemite return to 2017 form, Prescott must improve and his timing with receivers must improve as well and the DL pass rush must improve. Can all of that happen? Sure but there's still the question regarding the other teams in the division and conference. Will they improve or are the Cowboys dependent on several to decline in order to rise?

Some are creating their own favorite scenario for Garrett's exit which range from a down season from 2018 to not making the SB. Just like some have built theirs with Brees retiring and Payton leaving NO to come to Dallas.

I am still in that "believe it when I see it" camp because Garrett is family and we know how Booger is about family. They don't have to be competent to have a job.

I think the question of improvement is the record of the team, I don't see 8-8 keeping Garrett job. I think they feel they have a team who can compete and will expect them to be in the race to win it all. I don't think it is a SB or your gone but I do think the level of play they show and winning will determine Garrett future. Myself I hope Garrett can get it done but I also know that may not happen should this team play poorly

That's a head scratcher for me. Richard is already more of the defensive coordinator than Marinelli is, and he was going back to last year when he was the one calling the plays. Marinelli is coordinator in name only in some show of respect which I disagree with. He simply wants to coach the defensive line and his 'Rushmen" at this point. Richard handles the 7-man backend of the defense - which is the vast majority of it.
When he runs a defense all by himself. And he instructs linebacking and other coordinators. Then he can go to be a head coach in my opinion. Old school old ladder

OK, just keep in mind that he has done that before - in Seattle - And again, is more of the defensive coordinator in Dallas right now than the man they've allowed to keep the title. To me, it's either the head coach or the coordinator that is calling the plays. Neither of those is happening with this Cowboys defense.

You can't teach 2 minutes time management. I believe that's totally on the job training. Growing Pains either way. Yes I am a fan of his. I just don't think it's time yet but who knows

There's always an excuse that would let them lose and Garrett still keep his job. If Dak or Zeke or Cooper got injured three weeks in, then they would just tank the season like when Romo got hurt. They don't know how to coach backups to win. If the starters stay healthy though, this team will overcome the coaching and make Garrett look great.

Time for him to go. There better be a new coach here in 2020.

There is no such thing as the perfect roster - but the one in Dallas is hard to top.

This is always the time of optimism around the NFL. Teams have a new crop of rookies that perfectly meet their needs (or so they say), plus the new free agents that were exactly who they were looking for (or so they say), and the returning vets are all in the best shape of their careers and will be improved this fall (you know what goes here). Despite being sold the same bill of goods year after year, fans still get sucked in, only for most of them to see their team fall short of the playoffs. But for a handful, those factors mentioned above really are true, or at least largely so. That may well apply to the 2019 Dallas Cowboys.

That is of course important for the hopes of the team and its fans alike, but it is particularly key for head coach Jason Garrett. He is in the last year of his contract, with owner/general manager Jerry Jones basically saying he believes he can succeed - but he wants to see it before he offers an extension. However, this offseason has looked more like a team going “all in” than it has in years. This roster is deep and looks dangerous, and Garrett’s staff looks more unified and solid as well. Let’s break things down.

The changes to the coaching staff were limited, but huge

Many were clamoring for it to happen, and arguably it was at least a year overdue. The biggest move of any kind in 2019 for the Cowboys was the termination of Scott Linehan as offensive coordinator, with the corresponding promotion of Kellen Moore and the accompanying hire of Jon Kitna to replace Moore as QB coach.

It is perhaps a bit of piling on, but it had become clear that Linehan was a problem in a couple of ways. The reports of growing tension between him and both his head coach and players seem accurate. He repeatedly lapsed back into predictable play calls, but worse, he telegraphed what he was doing with personnel and formations far too often. Ezekiel Elliott is a formidable weapon, but running him into a stacked defensive box because the defense is reading run all the way just does not pay. Add in that the offensive line was compromised by the absence of Travis Frederick and having to work in a rookie, Connor Williams, and what should have been nearly certain short-yardage conversions were too often being stuffed. First down runs often suffered from the same issues as well, especially after the early, scripted part of the game.

In promoting Moore, the main reasons revolve around innovation and fresh ideas. This does not mean that he is going to come in with a bunch of new plays. Based on interviews with the staff this past week, it is more about using what already exists to better effect, with the incorporation of more pre-snap motion and shifting players from one role to another on the field. It is not surprising that the leadership sounds all positive about it, since it was their decision. But the reviews have been exceptionally strong from the players as well.

If Moore can bring this to calling the offense it could be exciting. And so far, Garrett seems to be giving him the freedom to do his thing.

Meanwhile, Kitna may be just what Dak Prescott needs. Moore’s strengths appear to be in calling plays, not coaching up his quarterback. Kitna is the opposite, and his comments during the past week reflect what he brings to the table.

Unlike Moore, Kitna has many NFL starts under his belt - 124, to be exact. He truly knows what a QB faces. If he is good at teaching technique (which is unfortunately limited under CBA rules), he can help Prescott take the next step.

Meanwhile, Kris Richard is now coming into his second year as part of what is a surprising well-functioning partnership with Rod Marinelli running the defense. And we shouldn’t overlook the retention of Marc Colombo as the offensive line coach. All in all, this may be the best and most cohesive staff Garrett has had. And one that shows very few fingerprints of the owners in assembling.

The roster is just as strong

This article perfectly sums up my own feelings about this team and staff as well - no excuses. Get the job done or this organization will make changes. You go up and down this roster and most every team in the league would kill to have as much young talent. Player personnel is arguably the strongest it's been since the team's of the 90's. Barring significant injury, the only way this team fails is because the coaches failed to do their part

Rah rah.
I have few expectations about this season and the cowboys.
My hope is for another QB in 2020. Dak won't do. We are top 15 or top 12 in power rankings. Dont expect too much.

I don't agree with that at all. Brandon Weeden Matt Cassel. That's all I need to say

I'm much happier with the OC and QB coach this year. As you detail, Kitna makes up for Moore's obvious lack of experience coaching up QBs. The word seems to be that Moore is bringing lots more misdirection and unpredictability in a given formation. That's what we've been calling for. Maybe we actually get it. If he gets the strategic picture right, we can live with growing pains for tactically calling games.

Another thing about Kitna. Some rumblings that he is on Garrett's short list as the next OC should Moore bomb. At least he'd be an OC trainee with real experience as an NFL starting QB. I did really like how the offense transformed when he played in 2010. He'd actually throw passes short early in the clock. Felix had a great season receiving.

I'm of the feeling that less is more when it comes to coaching the oline. But for the screw up with switching Green around from T to G, oline players seem to develop here. Alexander was a mistake because they didn't limit him to tweaking what was working. Colombo probably acts more as a leader to help get the best out of the All Pros than a guru who's going to feel the need to bring in a new system to prove his value.

The offensive play calling needed the boat rocked. The oline didn't.

With Collins out because of surgery and McGregor in, it's likely we look to trade Collins and go with McGregor at LG and Williams at RT. Could have our starting oline set with quality at every position for the next 3 seasons.

That's a very big deal.

Any decent coach would have gotten at least two or three more wins with the backups. Cassel won a lot of games for Belichick, and Weeden won two games for Houston immediately after leaving the Cowboys. I wouldn't expect the Cowboys to make the playoffs without the starting QB, but they really should have had at least 7 wins instead of 4. It just showed how everything has to go perfect for Garrett to win. He can't coach.

I just hope that - no matter what they do - the offensive line returns to their once dominant form. Far too much is invested there to have the struggles like we did last year. I know there were some extenuating circumstances, but even that doesn't excuse all of the issues they had.

I'm hopeful that improved health, added talent, and a return to what they do well, will fix those issues.

Too bad as much pressure isn’t on Dak to take us to the next level. And the “ believe it when I see it” .

It’s one thing for our franchise to be challenged with our dysfunctional front office and coaching staff but interesting the same aren’t as critical about the challenges a less than Elite QB presents.

I see it as yet another obstacle to overcome. Which with a talent dependent team might be the most critical component?

They're receiving enough influence to build a competitive roster. We have some talent on offense less a prolific passing QB. And some talent on defense despite being weak up the middle.

I truly believe we are a top 5 team in the NFC assuming some others haven’t improved more.

Our strength is leagues leading rusher and top 5 rushing offense. A top 10 defense.

Our weakness is 24th ranked passing offense and middle tier QB. None of the Elite teams ahead of us are this weak on offense .
Really, because CHI and NE gave you the blueprint to shut down LA's offense.
