Aikman was the best passer in Cowboys history, followed by White and Meredith, but the best QB was Staubach, he was the total package. Passers find ways to make the throws and QB's find ways to make the plays.

The one thing the two mentioned shared and had a leg up on Meredith, White and Romo was the team around them, namely the defense.

The best thing about that is that as Cowboys fans, we have multiple players we can put in that discussion. Probably more than any other NFL team.

agree. Most franchises are fortunate to have have 1 MAYBE 2 QB's that were elite. We been blessed to have a bounty of Elite QB's come thru Dallas. Danny White for me, ranks 3rd behind Aikman then Staubach at 1. White was WAY better than he got credit for. Got us to 3 championship games, but sadly we didn't have enough around him...and some of it was just bad luck. Don't forget we also had Craig Morton...no slouch..PLUS DANDY DON.

And Morton was the better passer of the two but Roger being the QB won him the job.

Like I'm going to believe anything ESPN says. I know one thing. Tony never played on any team as bad as Troy did that first year.
I can't believe somebody posted an article about Aikman written by the man who put out the trash saying Aikman was gay. Bayless has been anti-Aikman since day 1.

we have had, count them...6...what I would call elite QB's come thru Dallas over the years. Don Meredith(injuries took a toll on him), Staubach, Morton(took Denver to a SB in 77), Aikman, White(took the team to 3 NFC champ. games), and here comes the 1 I will get flack on....TONY ROMO. He just didn't get it done ...and maybe its fair to say he's not elite...but still..look how blessed we been in Dallas to find these hidden gems. NO ONE THOUGHT Roger was THAT GOOD...we knew he was great in college...but he had a military commitment to fulfill...so like 2 years later after we drafted him...he had to prove he could make the team. That was no slam dunk. But it worked out pretty well lol. Romo was an UDFA for cryin out loud lol. No one saw that comin...what he meant to this team. Now Dak has a chance at being another storied QB for us..but it will depend on him.

The answer is Staubach, obviously, but Aikman was a once in a generation player. He doesn't get credit because, like Dak, he played in a run-first time-of-possession offense. But if you put Aikman on the 2018 Chiefs he might have thrown for 5500 yards.

Staubach spent tim ein the military after college at Annapolis. To try and say that Dak outplayed Staubach is just total crap. But, but... Dak started as a rookie and led his team to a great season...... get out of here with that crap.

Staubachs 3rd season, Cowboys won a SB.

Comparing QBs from the 60s and 70s to today based upon stats is fools gold. The game was so very different. But you go ahread and keep believing Dak outplayed those guys in his first three years. Put Dak on the Cowboys as a rookie in 1989 .... bahahahahhahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahhahahahahhahhahahhahahahahahaha

Roger Staubach was simply unbelievable and led the damn NFC in passing the season he retired. Had his best statistical season of his career in his last season. If Dak ends up even in the conversation with Roger at the end of his career, we will havd had one of the best 4th rd qb draft picks in the history of the NFL. How old are you? IM curious?

Prescott first season compared to Tony's and Rogers. Prescott has better numbers you don't like it too bad. Do you want to take it further and read more into it that's your prerogative

Staubach was better. Aikman was only able to succeed if you make everything just right around him - one of the best offensive lines, one of the best running backs, one of the best defenses, etc. Staubach managed to get more done with less. Don't get me wrong, Aikman was a great passer and a precision guy, but he was like an expensive sports car - only works if every component is working right and finely tuned.

And if anyone is going to bring up the 3>2 argument, Aikman went up in the Super Bowl against two weak Bills teams while Staubach had to duke it out against the 1970s dynasty Steelers. And if it weren't for the refs' terrible officiating in SBXIII, Roger should have had Ring #3 as well.
I agree Staubach, but to say Aikman had better personnel around him I disagree. Staubach had a Hill, Thomas and Dorsett at Rb (unfortunately only Preston Pearson the first Pitt game). Very good OL for years, and a fantastic defense the whole time he was there. I think that D was better for longer than Troy's. And the Giants, Eagles were not very good, Skins were pretty good at times but Dallas owned that division. Aikman had to deal with very good to great Eagles, Giants, and Skins. That was brutal.
To me Aikman was the better thrower of the ball but Staubach the better player all around. He just had to play those great Steelers teams.
I'll take Staubach, so I agree. But Aikman is REALLY close.

Is Troy Aikman or Roger Staubach the best Cowboys QB ever?

Mike Florio and Chris Simms sort through the best quarterbacks in Cowboys' history as well as the worst.

Staubach is the best ever Cowboys QB. A leader in every sense of the word and a marvelous athlete. It was a joy to watch him play.

Aikman though was perfect for the teams we had back in the early 90’s. He knew Emmitt was our bread and butter and Troy rarely made the big mistake to cost us games. Cowboy fans are blessed to have had two such greats lead their teams.

I don't know about Staubach (I'm too young), but I know it's not Aikman. We've had better since.

Aikman is either 2 or 3 (I'm kind of assuming on White here too).
Romo is either 1 or 2
Staubach is 1 to 3 (again, I dunno - all I have to go on is how great everyone else seems to think he was)

Dude. You're on the freakin' internet. Do some research... smh/lol

You should entertain the idea of finding the old games when Staubach played, it would surely change your perspective. Staubach was just simply the best in our franchise history. Especially the '75 season, he was a freak. The man was a complete QB and leader and he literally made players shine. Especially in big games.
Romo is in no way better than Staubach or Aikman. He just wasn't as polished and disciplined and crumbled in big games. Aikman was a Ninja in the post-season. Romo is about Danny White caliber.
I do get being young changes opinion, but if Aikman played in todays era he would have had an even more prestigious career. Back then he took some hits. I don't think Romo or anyone in between would have lasted.

But Staubach was among the best of the best of all QBs in NFL history.

But I highly recommend fetching the older games, they're a lot of fun.

Can you elaborate on that. Yeah try playing against the Steelers in the 60s and 70s.

A quick study of a football player's body type comparison from 1975 to 1995 should help to elaborate.

I’ve read several fans mentioning Tony Romo in this discussion. I respect all my fellow Cowboys fans and their opinions. But any mention of Tony Romo being better than either Roger or Troy is either lacking respect for prior greatness or just lazily overvaluing the era they have watched.

Tony Romo was a very good QB in his day. At his best, he was one of the 10 best in the league at that time. Probably 2007-14. I respect Tony but greatness is never a word I would associate with him. He had opportunities to be great, but did not or could not seize them.

If you ever saw Troy Aikman throw a 20 yard out on a dime or see his timing with Michael Irvin on that unstoppable slant route, his greatness as an all time great at accuracy is almost unmatched.

If you ever saw Roger Staubach make unbelievable plays in comebacks to win playoff games or see his undaunted courage to throw his body all out to score a TD in any game was inspiring. Roger Staubach was the most inspiring player ever to wear the Star. His teammates respected him above all others. Watch the NFL films “A football life” on Roger. Some of his former teammates still tear up when they talk about what a GREAT player he was and what a GREAT man he is off the field.

Roger is the greatest. Troy a close second. Please keep Tony Romo in a respected place saved for ROH members like Don Meredith, who was also a very good Cowboys QB but cannot be mentioned in the same sentence with Roger and Troy.

Yes but you have to take in consideration the rules also, they are allowed to bang the quarterbacks head into the ground.
