JG is smart enough and likely has enough money tucked away that his future is pretty well secured.

It's also entirely possible that there are teams with worse coaches that just might see fit to hire him.

There are 5-8 HC's that are ducks sitting on the water and don't know it yet but they're about to get shot. ATL, CAR, NYG, WAS, MIN and even AZ could be looking in just the NFC. I figure Zimmer's on a make or break season and Kingsbury was an unproven college coach and wouldn't be the first given just one year. We may have an iffy situation with Dallas but how would you like to be an AZ fan? Hire an unsuccessful college coach and tie him to a rookie QB that he failed to recruit to his college.

What's strange about the NFL is the security issue for HC's. The lack of security with 6-9 HC's canned every year is the security of knowing there will be 5-8 openings and when guys like Norv Turner and John Fox on the HC coaching circuit can land jobs, they all know they're in pretty good shape.

If I were a coach in the NFL, I would go for that HC gig too with the understanding I will probably get canned but I will pocket the dough and move onto the next gig. I am surprised Linehan hasn't landed someplace unless he has and he didn't let me know. He knows I was hoping for another job for him.....any other job.

The Garrett shield in full force!!!! Lol!!

You asked.

It just takes little bit of thinking about how the career of an NFL backup QB works to realize that anybody worried about a year to year job isn’t going to keep one for 15 years *before* going into NFL coaching—a career everybody knows is year-to-year to begin with.

Admit it: it was kind of a silly question in the first place, designed to just bring just a little bit more negativity into question about a coach you don’t like to begin with.

And no, I don’t think being in the final year of his rookie contract is going to make Dak Prescott play worse going into the season if he’s not extended, either. If anything I think it’d help him play better, too.

Garrett doesn't have much self-awareness. It's one of his great faults at a coach, he can't recognize his own limitations.

Kingsbury's 1st mistake was huge. Trading away their QB in place of Murray. They will be calling for his head by mid season.
There is a chance he can have some success until they figure out the scheme and how to defense Murray. I expect a lot of RG3 type runs.

I wouldn't mind seeing Murray do well, but just can't see it right now.

I'm talking about his coaching career, nothing to do with him being a backup QB. There is a lot of pride in the coaching profession. If he's not worried, then I think he sucks even more! However, I give him enough credit to think that he gives a crap and is feeling the pressure. I hope he is, if he's not he should just turn in his letter of resignation.

Gotta give Kliff credit for making the decision. Garrett would have asked Jerry what to do.

Most, but not all. This is about Garrett's pride, not about money.

It's ironic that Aflac doesn't cover lame duck coaches:)

I coached a long time and I saw many lame duck coaches. Thank goodness I was never in that situation, but those that were did not handle it very well. I was close to five coaches that went through that and spoke to them regularly. The pressure they were under was immense. Beyond worrying about paying their bills, the hit to their ego that they might be fired was tough. Do you think Garrett is worried? Yes or no?
Garrett isn't a "lame duck" coach. He's just in the final season of his current contract, which is not the same thing. "Lame duck" is someone with nothing to lose because their impending termination is certain and a successor is already been chosen. Garrett still has plenty to lose and so he is still motivated to make the right decisions. Having "hope" to retain your job makes a big difference.

I think it was Bum Phillips who said "There are two types of coaches in the NFL. Those who have been fired and those who will be fired."
I knew Bum, he probably said that, but so do most coaches. I was never fired and I take pride in that.

Obviously, he doesn’t have to worry financially going forward, so then the question is professional pride.

With Garrett’s personality and his “focus on today and what you can control” mentality, I would imagine that he’ll work as hard as he can on getting his team as prepared as possible for this season, and let the chips fall where they may.

I doubt that he’s worried about it. He will do everything he can to win as many games as possible. That’s all he can do. In an NFL world where coaching careers are short and he’s already been doing it longer than a lot of guys, I don’t imagine he’s too worried about it.

There are only 32 guys in the world doing what he’s doing. He’s only had one losing season and won more games than most. I don’t think he has too many regrets.
