As a fan I like Dak, as a former coach I seen a lot of good qualities. He can be a great QB with a supporting cast. He's much better than anything we could go out and get. I don't think he deserves top 5 money, but he will get it because of the market.
Leadership and toughness earns your players respect, he has that. Players play hard for him, if his demands get outta whack, that could change.
He doesn't make his teammates better with his arm, but he brings out the best in them with his leadership and grit.
Good analysis.

Not going to happen all the time in a players 1st NFL vanilla PS game. And not without surrounding starters either.
I understand what you are saying. I guess it will take a few sacks to get some to say differently. Then they will say...yeah but it was against backup players, let's see it in real games...
He can' win with the hecklers on here.

Way too early to come to any conclusion about Hill as a pro.
I do know he was way overrated by his college game tape. I just don't see where these potential elite skills are at others see.

I don't think the pre season game had much to do with the feeling about Hill. It's the leaving day 1 practice "cramps" not heard much about practice flashes either. Unfortunately because he wasthe high pick the one vs one videos shown he's not winning many. Full disclosure in no way can he be called a bust this early.

From what I read, the coaches like what they seen in practice.
So a rookie player leaves practice with cramps, and he is a bust because of it? Wow, what if a vet player does the same thing, he lost it, cut him?
Come on man, I think you know better than that.

I keep seeing threads and posts about Hill being a bust.
Now this is the usual crap from the sky is falling and the Debbie downers, and the usuals that do not like anything.

But to listen to the team, they are are happy with his play and his progress. They liked his never give up attitude and the power the shows. They thought he had a good effort and game against SF. Garrett did say he need to learn still. But they like his progress and he looks the player that knew they drafted.

One PS game and the guy did not have 17 sacks like fans want, so now he is the next player such as LVE was last year, labeled a bust. Typical crap.
to most of the fans, if the player doesn't go out and dominate in the first pre-season game, then he is a bust or bust written all over him. these fans expect nothing but total dominance to be satisfied. Usually fans do this, because they wanted another player, instead of the player we have so they want them to be bad so they can be right about what pick they wanted instead

they seem to be more lenient on lower round picks. unless they had a pet cat they wanted and we didn't draft

Has anyone actually called Hill a "bust"? I've seen people question his play through camp and preseason so far, but I haven't seen anyone actually label him a bust.

Id like to see him show something against other teams second and third stringers, but DT is a tough position to transition from college to NFL. I think he deserves a full three years before getting a "bust" label. I don't think it's ever to early to be disappointed though, as that's based purely on personal opinion which is the foundation of this forum.

Of course it’s too early to call him a bust but there were other players closer to being sure things at positions of need available and he had a bunch of red flags. Just not smart drafting. So here he is unable to contribute against 2nd and 3rd teamers and has an URFA outshining him so far. Thornhill and Ricky Walker off the street looks so much better than Hill right now to me. Hopefully he puts it together.

You don't think some of that is coach speak. Come on they are not going to add fuel to the bust talk. By the way they're the ones that picked him. That would be calling themselves wrong. And again no way is bust talk legitimate. However I'm sure most looked for more positive reviews.

To be fair guys like Wise and Walker had draftable grades. Walker and Wise were all conference players in power 5 conferences. Walker had preseason All American Hype from Athlon.

This thread isn't long enough, we really need to talk about the fact that Anthony Hitchens was a complete waste of a 4th round pick.

Alright that's fair. A nice list of guys. I guess the Cowboys screwed the pooch then because I don't see Hill being ready this year to make a impact or eventually start. Too raw IMO.
Problem w/ Hill is that he only has one standout trait that I can determine, an incredibly quick first step. Now, is that enough to make an impact? Possibly.

Is he able to collapse the pocket? Push his man backwards and disrupt the QB? Can he stand his ground and not get pushed backwards a yard or two on running plays? Those are the qualities I want out of an interior DL and I am not seeing that from Hill. Saw plenty of that from Saunders though.

Overdrafted ?
Several thought the very same thing about LVE at draft time, when we selected him in the first round and add that he was limited and had to push thru a camp injury, and was limited in snaps until Lee injury occurred.

Byron Jones, to this very day, still would have never had the chance to be prove he
could a good player if we had kept the previous secondary coach who insisted that
Byron was more of a FS than he was a CB.

Some players just won't happen overnight- but its very important that Hill at least gets the key significant amount of snaps on the field to even have a chance of learning and improving..

Some overdrafted players work out. That doesn't mean they weren't overdrafted.

LVE was slightly overdrafted. He was considered a late first/early 2nd round pick. Lots of unknowns about him, especially only standing out for one year and not coming from a major football program.

Hill has never stood out, and also doesn't come from a major football program. He was rated as a late round talent in several reports. Very scary pick for a 2nd rounder. On the flipside of that, he does have a high ceiling, so I wasn't completely against the pick.

Me too. I am afraid he's too limited in what he can do. However, his first step is freakish, so maybe he'll pan out.

Of course, way, WAY too early to make rash judgments.
I will say that when we were on the clock, I was liking Taylor Rapp and several others, but wasn't too bent out of shape when we took Hill.
Hope he has a great career.

Practicing against Tyron Smith has got to feel like pushing a boulder uphill. The game tape shows he fought hard and never gave up. I like the resilience in this rookie. I recommend paying attention to #79 on defense when the Cowboys play their next PS game. He's a young man full of fight and determination. I find it inspirational.
